  • HOW TO PAINT SCALE WOOD GRAIN.......Moving to the interior of the Butch Hartman Salvinos JR Charger build....I'll show how to paint scale wood grain on the Charger dash, build a Detail Master Shifter kit, and add some interior dirt and weathering. A few simple detailing techniques and supplies is all it takes to turn a boring 1/25 scale black dash and interior into a more realistic looking replica.     Within the first 5 minutes I've broken the drill bit and glued the PE to my finger . . . : )

    For the shifter knob, try using .177 air gun bbs. Made out of nylon and much easier to drill.

    So did all the 70s Charger stock cars have wooden dash inserts?

      I've seen partial ones like this, full wood grain across the whole dash face, and some are just all flat black. It really was up to who was building the car back then.

      I get them off of eBay. You get several of each size. Which is good because I break them often!

      I find those on ebay. They are used in circuit boards. They are really sharp, but super fragile. I break a lot of them!

      kool yea i found some on the website on the box you had on there im tired of the bits bending on me that i have seems like some of the styrene is harder to drill thru than others i guess thank you very much for getting back with me on it

    Where did you get those gauge decals at? I'm trying to find an assortment of generic decals to use on my various models.

      I believe those either came from a Salvino kit sheet, or from Slixx. Powerslide makes a full gauge sheet for different eras as well.

      Actually, the brush was awful. It was super stiff because I hadn't cleaned it very well from the last time I used it. So that may have actually helped make the pattern.

      I wouldn't say it is any better. Probably a lot quicker than working with oils since they take so long to dry. But for a quick effect it's pretty handy.

      Early 70's....It is more of a general representation of the era. I've seen all sorts of different versions. The Museum car didn't have wood at all. Some have full wood faces. And others were like this.

      These cars still retained a lot of the factory stock interior pieces. The dash was one of them. Seems weird by today standards, but they were there.
