Grizzly bear steals our elk, then charges me when we found the bull.

- Buddy shoots this bull right at last light with his bow and next morning we continued the tracking job. This grizzly came charging out of the brush from where he/she had covered up the elk. Bear only went about 100 yards up the hill and kept walking around waiting for us to leave.
I took a bull elk in Northern New Mexico years ago late in the evening. It was getting dark and I was a few miles away from the truck so I left him overnight. That morning upon my approach to that downed elk I heard a commotion like no other, a pack of coyotes were howling and barking and growling and when I got close enough and looked down a shallow valley those coyotes broke,I guess they saw me and there was a black bear and he had my elk by the nose and he was literally dragging it walking backwards through aspens and blue spruce, the power on display was note worthy. He had torn a front shoulder off that elk and had already consumed it along with a little other damage. Those coyotes were trying to run him off of that carcass. Anyways he bolted when he got sight of me, I had a bear tag and he made a nice rug. The entire event made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
I was in a brush blind at a water hole in NM calling and I heard popping and turned my head and a big black bear was popping his teeth 3ft from me with only the little sticks between me and him.I drew my bow back and he bolted into the trees .Ive carried a pistol ever since
Round here it’s pigs, I’ve seen several that were over 350 & probably bigger. We’ve got bears down in SE OK & lions have been here for a while but their numbers are definitely increasing. I carry my pistol when bow hunting but frankly it’s more because of tweakers than critters.
I watched a black bear kill a pretty good size wild hog in the Great Smokies National Park and then drag it up the side of a steep mountain with ease. The squeals and screams of that hog went on forever and they were blood curdling.
@@OleBadDog might have been a little upset
@@chateaupig826 ya reckon 😂
This was no longer "your elk". As soon as you realized it was a cache, you should have left and just called Fish & Game to tell them you stuck a bull, but a grizzly claimed it. They would still allow you to fill your tag. This is a very dangerous sitaution you put the group in. It is also likely if it were just you, the grizzly would have attacked rather than bluff charging the group.
Bears gotta eat. Like the bear knows you have to have a tag to eat an elk or that it's yours. I once shot an elk quarter it up came back 2 hours later, and one quarter was gone and the gut pile was picked through. I didn't care , it's the laws of nature. Thank goodness I had the back straps and tenderloins back at camp .
If the bear has already done that to the elk then I'd say let the bear have it. Time to get out of there before someone or the bear gets hurt.
Some beautiful country where you guys are at but man hunting game in grizzly country is a whole another level of preparedness. Hope everyone made it out safe.
That charge was insane!!! Can't believe you guys survived all that clickbait!!! 🤦♂️
😂😂😂😂
Damn if that don’t increase the pucker factor by 100 nothing will!!
We've had 9 moose and 1/2 dozen deer taken by grizzly and black bear. We've been charged, attacked and swatted once... Tuco in the movie The Good Bad and Ugly said once, if you are going to shoot SHOOT, don't talk
Bear tagged it first. Even the Game Warden would rule that way
Lol, whatever you say
A 10 gauge, .454, (2) 10mms, and a 460... Would have sounded like a war zone if that critter got too friendly...
I've got ALL those items....lol
@@Mooseracks And if a push had become a shove , all 4 of you would have been deaf for a week ! but alive...
Probably didn’t need those underwear anyway….😎✌️🍻
That's a good feeling... these grizzlies are EVERYWHERE.. Puts a new twist on hunting. Lol
At least there wasn't a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
At least you fed him before you left, I'm sure he's stoked.
Glad to see you guys all have good protection for grizzlies on you. I’ve read too many stories of fools going backpacking whatever into the wilderness with a leather man.
It's ok I learned karate at planet fitness
Those ppl kill me the ones who go hiking in Backcountry and end up cooking fish walking off alone just ignorant stuff not one carrying protection maybe a can of bear spray lol me I'm not stepping foot in bear country with protection and bear spray ain't enough...
@@erica4you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Only allowed to have a leatherman in canada . No protection allowed .
I see bears everytime I go hiking ,so I carry a pepper medley of spices . a walking picnic basket .
The best way to have bears shown up around here is to fire off a shot or two , wait about 30 minutes . He will be along shortly
@ericastone899 It always amazes me to read comments like this. Bears aren't just mindless killing machines who will kill you any chance they get. Even in this instance, which is one of the most dangerous positions to be in with a bear (when they're guarding a food cache) the bear false charges and runs away.
I live in bear country, I see bears (both black and Grizzly) on an almost daily basis from April to Oct on my property in Northern BC. I carry bear spray but have never had to use it. I've been bluff charged the odd time, but in every situation the bear is scared and is warning me, to give it some space to allow it to escape.
Yet I'm constantly reading comments (mostly from Americans) about how they never go into the woods without guns. We have lots grizzlies in canada (BC and Alberta) and it's ILLEGAL to carry a handgun (pistol) with you when in the woods. So unless your rifle hunting, the vast majority of people who are out in the backcountry are unarmed.
I'm convinced the ability to carry a firearm makes you MORE afraid. 😂
Glad to see you boys got some heat with ya.🤙🏻
Good thing yall had the 10mm and whatever they had I never go bow hunting with just my bow.
Wow I had to get you off that unlucky 13 sub so I liked , commented and sub at the end of the video. Should be # 14 scary stuff we have a lot of Griz here in Alberta
Glad you guys were packing some heat, nice bull!
That's exactly what I said some ppl don't understand how deadly bears can be!
The nerve of some Bears
Scary encounter. How long was it from the shot on the elk to walking up on it? Looks like that bear got some work done in a hurry
Why do people always yell at bears, " hey bear." Like they know what a bear is. They probably think, "No, you are the bear. My name is Paul. You 🐻bear." 😅🤣
Just so your not surprising the bear. One of the worst things you can do is quietly walk up on a bear especially with cubs... I know the hey bear sounds silly lol but it's literally what they tell you to say in safety classes.
@Erica Stone I f I ever see a bear in the wild and I don't want to surprise it, I am going to yell very loud "hey horse, hey horse" 😅🤭 Perhaps it will reply, "hey, hey I am not a horse, I am a bear. Did you not go to safety classes on how to approach a bear? 😉"
@@valladolid0711 lol very good!
Where is Steven Segal and the bear they're about the same size! 🤣
You’re balls are much bigger than mine will ever be. Respect fellas, and glad you guys are all okay. Great upload! Thank you!

Oooo weee that'll wake ya up lol. Well you posted this video so at least we know you made it out

Yikes. Had cougar in my tracks a couple times deep in muzzle hunting back when my state didn't allow accompanying modern sidearm. That is stupid! But I feel much better now with my superblackhawk on the hip. Being killed is one thing. Being eaten alive is quite another!
So scary you’re holding your phone. Lmao
Would a 45 caliber stop a grizzly bear?
Even armed you were fools to go in there!
Where did this happen? Wyoming?
Finally some with sense enough to pack!
Lucky someone didn't get mauled. Most people back away and give them the kill after it's claimed.
About 4 years before this I did get mauled by a sow with 2 cubs
@@neilrico3907 glad you made it, now I understand why your packing so much heat always good to be prepared
@@neilrico3907 Apparently you didn't learn anything from that experience, I guess you really can't teach an old dog, new tricks!
What State were you guys at? I'm kinda keeping track of stories like this. I hunt in grizzly country as well
Montana
In what state and region were you hunting? Had this happen to me in AK after I killed a bull moose,...scary!
Well done, glad it worked out for you. Does the fact that the grizzly stole your kill and if you report it to the Warden will they let you shoot another so you can harvest the meat? Or is it too bad so sad sucks to be you type of deal? :)
Good question
I had heard they did not , but that was years ago. During gun season in Montana the Grizzlies have learned to hone in on the area of a gunshot knowing they'd be a kill down , so reportedly its become quite an issue..so maybe the DNR have had a change of heart with regards to reissueing a tag...but I don't rightly know for sure....
@@kensalazar5066 I have heard of this happening and the same thing is happening all over the world with sharks, Sperm whales, and Killer whales they are adapting their hunting strategies around our fishing ways. :)
@@williamlocklear1283 yup, you really can't blame them, it's a battle for the fittest... imagine having to find your next meal in the wilderness....its a daily chore that often ends with no meal.....for days at times
How long had it been since it was shot?
my thought exactly....that bear didn't cover up that elk in an hour !! Something ain't right about this vid.
Should be a two-Fer….bear tacos are great
Wt he eat the sound off your camera 2???
If you bow hunt, ALWAYS have a backup rifle and pistol. Don't become a meal
Wow that bear was in deep shit if he decided to charge again.
Next time take a moment to turn on the camera and press record while the bear is charging. It will make the video way more interesting. 😉
Lol😂
Dont be scared, people keep those as pets
I’m curious I’m from WV and we always hunted to eat I’m guessing just being a game hunter y’all just cut heads off and leave the rest jw cause y’all didn’t look prepared to carry anything else out just a question
Great question, so my understanding of the law is "which I could be wrong" you've got 2 options. #1 you can tag it and take the head and let the bear have the rest and then you're season is over or leave everything and have fish and game issue you a new tag. That wasn't an option really for us cause we only had 2 more days left to hunt
@@neilrico3907 oh ok thanks for the reply man stay safe out there I was just curious as to how sport hunting went 😎
How much did it charge you for the bull elk, maybe he thinks it’s his to sell?
(This is just a joke)
Yeah me and a buddy were charged this year south of Cody Wyoming. She had 3 cubs, came right to the calls during archery season and started her charge at 75 yards. Turned her at 15 ft with bear spray
Correction, south of Dubois
Lucky!!
Cussing help?
What did you expect in bear country a bear with manners😎
Grizzlies, I'm warning you:
When I'm called off,
I got a sawed-off,
Squeeze the trigger
And bodies are hauled off.
To be fair, you were in his house. If I lived in the wild and found a huge free meal I'd try to defend it too.
Kinda ironic that it says keep comments respectful.
I'd want nothing short of a 700 lb ft AEA .58 cal for this bear...
Too big, 9mm works just fine and has less recoil so you can get more shots off accurately.
@brian ross I loved my 9mm Beretta and agree with you that it can stop a bear. 👍
Nope, need more guns...lots more guns...more guns.
at least you have a sidearm. a lot of bow hunters think they are to heavy ! what a joke . always have a sidearm with you in bear country. because you never know.
September 25th 2016 I was mauled by a sow grizzly in that same area, I know how serious it can get in there
@@neilrico3907 holy crap! how did that go down?! Were you seriously injured?

Kind of surprised none of you are packing a rifle! That would make my hair stand up for sure!
You Can't Have a Rifle While Bow Hunting
Someone in the group was packing a shotgun also. They also had a 10mm and a .44

@clarence4735 lmao. I know it's not funny but your comment was hilarious. Bears are my absolute biggest f'n fear in this world. Good old y.t introduced me to "bear mauling" stories and I haven't been right since. Absolutely terrifying
In Canada, specifically alberta, where there is tons of grizzlys, we arn't aloud to carry pistols. So if you go out with a bow, you have to lug around a rifle as well. It's retarded.
It's Canada
@@josephrogers8213 that's true. One and the same.
That's crazy to me. Especially going into bear country you should be allowed to protect yourself with whatever.. we usually carry pistols on everyone and rifles.
So you decided to go back to its food stock pile
Always have a large caliber revolver 🔫
All that for a trophy?
Yeah 'F' that noise!!!!!! Sucks to want to harvest an animal with a compound bow and have to walk the jungle like you're Dutch......got Dillion and Hawkins backing you up. Get to tha Chopppphaa!!!!!
Not on film...I'm calling bullshit!!!
This is why I quit hunting elk in these areas, grizzly will literally come running to a gun shot, along with the fricken wolves, no thanks, they don't have fear of man anymore, this needs to change -hunt them like our grandad's used to
No your granddads caused them to damn near go extinct!
The number of bear attacks have been going up as well. To many ppl think they are just teddy bears..
It's really hard to give up your bull grizzlies sure our nasty

does he? rights? this is law of the forest; take what you can if you can, that is what a bear understands.
