  • Hey everyone! Welcome to our first video!
    We've dreamed of making a video like this since freshman year, and finally the time has come. Grace got accepted into Harvard University for environmental science and public policy, and I (Julian) got accepted into UPenn's Wharton School for marketing and communications.
    This video is about our stats, extracurriculars, and essays that got us into our dream schools. We include our college acceptance reactions as well since they were so short.z
    A quick reminder that everything we talk about in this video is what worked for US and is not guaranteed to work for everyone. To all the underclassmen watching, we wish you the best of luck throughout high school!

Most of the colleges expect experience or whoever I have seen getting in has some kind of experience via competitions etc. Is it really important? Did you have any experience about your major before sending the emails? I'm doing the research for experience yet I'm scared I won't make it without having one to begin with! Hey Julian and Grace I'm a high school freshman currently in Honors Algebra 2 and am interested in pursuing a career in medicine and doing pre-med in college, I like math science and journalism and was wondering if it would be a good idea to go from Honors Precalculus over the summer to AP Calc AB in my sophomore year like you guys. I would then take Calc BC, in my junior but was wondering if that option is better compared to the option of taking Honors Precalculus during my sophomore year and going into Calc BC my junior year.

  • @virtualunicorn1197
    @virtualunicorn1197 Před 3 lety +4

    Hi! I was wondering how exactly you approach research opportunities with professors? What kinds of things would I email them, and would I have to pick and let them know a specific topic I want to conduct more research on? How did you decide what exactly to research (within your area of interest)? And how does the research process work (would your professor give you guidance on this? did you publish your research?)

    • @graceandjulian3114
      @graceandjulian3114  Před 3 lety +2

      I emailed professors that researched areas that I resonated with, so for me, I looked for professors that researched environmental science. I would look at the faculty directory for colleges around me and email the professors under environmental science. I leaned towards professors that research in the lab rather than data. I used a pretty generic email template, saying that I’m extremely interested in environmental science and mention that I resonated with something the professor had published. When I emailed my UCLA professor, I mentioned that I had attended a science research conference at Harvard, which I’m sure helped. When I emailed my USC professor, which was much more hands on and significant in my opinion, I included that I had previous research experience, which helped me get that position. Overall, it really helps if you have something on your resume that shows you want to do research or you have experience that indicates you can take such a position. As for the research process, I rarely worked with the professors and mostly interacted with Ph. D students in the lab. My work was never published, but it was still a great experience to work in a lab. Hope this helps, and let me know if you need further clarification! - Grace

    I thought the elite colleges require like 10 or more APs??

    • @graceandjulian3114
      @graceandjulian3114  Před 3 lety +5

      Not at all! It's all situational, depending on the school you go to / where you live. My school didn't allow me to take APs until sophomore year, and I took as many as they would allow me (total of 7 by the end of junior year). Even though that may not be a high number compared to other applicants, it was more than the other students at my school, who had maybe 3-6 by that point. Colleges look at you in the context of your school/area, not the entire nation. It would be unfair to compare me to someone from another school that doesn't restrict how many APs their students can take. Hope that helps!

    • @reardelt
      @reardelt Před 3 lety +1

      @@graceandjulian3114 It seems like you can game the system by shifting into a 'worse' school which restricts AP in freshman year so you can get away with taking fewer APs and still be seen as good. It's better to be valedictorian in a bad ghetto school than being a top 10% in Phillips Academy Andover.

    • @graceandjulian3114
      @graceandjulian3114  Před 3 lety +10

      Not quite? Firstly, that wouldn't be the most moral way of getting into college. You should try outperforming the system by making the best out of your situation and standing out as an applicant by maximizing the resources you have around you. If what you suggested did work and you were able to "game" the system, I'm not sure how much satisfaction you would gain from that acceptance, knowing that you potentially deprived others who weren't in a fortunate enough situation to "game" the system, of that opportunity. Secondly, whether that's truly "better" than being in the top 10% of a school like Andover is debatable. Say you move into a neighborhood of lower socioeconomic status, you have to consider that the school you would attend wouldn't have the same resources to prepare you for college as Andover. After all, private schools like Andover are college preparatory schools and have better resources to get the average attendee into college than most public schools. So while it may be "easier" for you to be the valedictorian at another school, it doesn't necessarily ensure that colleges will deem you college-ready, whereas they may consider even the top 50% of kids at Andover college-ready. Just take a look at Andover's matriculation rates, they send more than their top 10% to "elite" colleges. With all that said, no one really knows what route of education is "better," but we wouldn't recommend anyone try to cheat the system like that!
