      Supporting epi is giving Gibson the license to rip us off. Substandard guitars shouldn't get praise. This isn't the model of craftsmanship or good business. They are intentionally building crap to force over priced guitars on the public that really aren't worth it. I tried to find a LP for 2k and I was willing to go over budget for the right guitar and I couldn't find one with a better finish than my epi. I couldn't find one that had the neck quality or the nut cut, fret finish as my epi. I was beside myself when I was so excited to finally by my first real Gibson. I couldn't do it. The guitars weren't worth 2k.

Corporations have literally billions tied up in how they structure their pricing, they hire executive CFOs for that. Plus you're talking about general trends among millions of people, which is nothing to do with what I said, you're having a different conversation, talking about a different topic. It's easy to argue against something nobody said. But do you _really_ think they're gonna throw out all of their expensive analysis and and top class executives and their entire marketing and analysis department and just watch a single video by a tiny CZcams channel and go "hey you know what, he's right, let's just throw away those millions of dollars we spent and just follow this guy's advice"? Cos if you do then aww honey, no, that's not how big corporations work, dear. They spend a crazy amount on analysing the market, even at times when they absolutely have no reason to (market analysis departments sometimes invent work for themselves so they can maintain their yearly budget and their jobs, doing busywork). They analyse the market and the Internet and trends as a whole, as you said, but I never mentioned that at all. So really you agree with me, so thank you.

I’d like to have the LP Jr too but there’s no reason too I don’t suppose.

The pickups are what Epiphone called "P-90 Classics" and it seems to not sound much different from this 2020 version. Great guitars for the money. Thanks for the nice in depth review. The Epiphone Les Paul Special is, in my opinion, very good value for the money, it’s a shame that they seem to have fret levelling issues at the factory, I’ve seen several reviews of new Epiphones that have fret problems, it’s not the end of the world but you either have to find someone to fix it or do it yourself which doesn’t seem right on a new guitar. I actually quite liked the pickups, minus points for me are the neck shape, fingerboard material and the glossy too thick finish. It’s not a guitar that I’d buy new but might consider a cheap used one just out of curiosity.

    I went for the Les Paul Muse in 'Smoked Almond' - basically a Goldtop. It's awesome! Lightweight and looking like a true Les Paul! The fretboard edges are rolled and I've had no issues with putting the action down to the typical Les Paul height. The pickups are nicely responsive and do what I need them to do quite nicely! I've heard mixed things about this particular model. But, any issues can be worked out I'm sure!

    I bought one from a salesperson other than my usual guy at Sweetwater and I asked if it could be plekked and if I could get stainless steel frets and a setup just for fun because a friend of mine bought one and I LOVED it already and I already knew I would be happy with it but I really was surprised that a lady from Gibson in Nashville called me back and asked exactly how I would like it set up and which fret size I preferred. I got Med jumbo SS frets and it is plekked (I hope that spelling is correct, my iPhone marks it red anyway) the intonation is pretty much on, I mean REALLY close and I wanted a case so it came in a Gibson Les Paul case that said Gibson on the outside. I checked the specs out of the box like yours, case came separately, and specs were 3/64 high E and 5/64 low E just as she asked me. The pickups are very articulate at just before breakup on the volume and tone knobs which are very lively and scream or cry with just a touch between 5 and 9.5, 10 is on fire. I couldn’t be happier with the service or price of this guitar. I did pay for plek (Sp) and setup but she put my preferred GHS .009-42 strings on it too which I didn’t have to pay for. I honestly think that the Nashville employee I spoke with was as excited to throw this axe together as I was to get it! I can’t recommend it highly enough, and the Sweetwater experience is always great. I was very surprised to see you do a “Cheap” guitar! This one sure doesn’t feel or sound cheap. I’m recording through an early 90’s AC30, a Deluxe Reverb and a JCM 900 half stack and it’s just awesome. I’m so happy that you thought it was cool too because I respect your opinion so much! Take caaare!

      @@UCEg7z1wK epiphone have higher build quality than Gibson does these days. Seriously. They're too quality instruments being made in China. So much these days is done with machines that are way more precise than any human making them by hand could ever be. Google "PLEK machine" fr example. They're machines that do a 3D scan of any guitar and then set it up for you, adjusting the action and intonation and the truss rod etc extremely precisely, like fractions of a millemetre precise
      Asia is the king of guitars these days. Even for the highest quality guitars, you want to go with Asian over American. Indonesia for example makes some of the best quality instruments ever produced. American guitars have a premium added to them before the guitar is even made, and then tend to have way more issues both aesthetic and playability wise. Just watch any of the videos Trogly has made on new Gibson models in the past few years for a boatload of examples. By default if you get a brand new Gibson you'll be getting problems with finish cracking, issues with the binding, issues with the frets and the action, issues with the pickups etc. America has fallen behind. At least with the big companies. The boutique luthiers are probably still the best in the world. But for mass produced guitars (and by mass produced I mean maybe even as low numbers as 200 guitars or something, rather than boutique custom shop stuff) go with Asia. Solar guitars, for example, are maybe the most consistently well made brand of all, and they're all made in Indonesia

      The original PAF design had a lower output than the p90s of the time. And so therefore so does modern examples of the vintage PAF like the Dimarzio PAF and the Seymour Duncan Seth Lover. But even ignoring the output, P90s sound both fat and raw at the same time, they're so aggressive when you want them to be, but they're also good at cleaning up and doing a more bluesy strat kinda tone with the right EQ settings
      They're the most versatile kind of pickup. But yeah metal guitarists are often using teles and strats for recording these days, because those bridge single coils sound so much more raw and angry with high gain than any humbucker, so it's a good idea for example to double track a guitar part, recording once with high output humbuckers, then recording the same part again with a tele, and overdubbing them together to get a more rounded tone. A lot of high output humbuckers are designed to make the sound more "clean". Not the usual meaning of clean. But sort of less surrounding noise and more precise notes that just "djent" very easily, whereas single coils and lower output humbuckers can be very "messy". That's the purpose of active EMG pickups for example, to have that more "clean" type of sound. But obviously to a lot of guitarists that kinda defeats the point, metal is often about being loud and angry and messy.
      But p90s are probably the "messiest" pickup of all. They're more fat than fender style single coils, more messy and angry and raw, and I love it. They're so loud with the 60 cycle hum and all that but I've never been bothered by that hum of single coils, it's easily removed if you want to do so by using a noise gate, and in a live situation the audience will never hear that hum in the mix anyway.
      I can't wait to buy this epiphone lp special. Once the pandemic is over, obviously. I don't want to put people at risk by buying one now. So I hope they're still making them in 2021 when the pandemic is over, that this isn't a one year only model. But they've been so enormously popular I doubt they'll stop making them. But yeah I've got a Dean Palomino which has 3 p90s with strat type wiring (so it has those hum cancelling 2 and 4 positions too) and I love the tone, but it's a big old hollowbody guitar and so feedbacks so easily when you turn up the gain, so I really want this epi for that same kind of tone but none of the feedback. Just a big old no nonsense slab of wood with pickups attached. Love it

    • @jaredallen439
      @jaredallen439 Před 4 lety +1

      @jacktheripped it's basically just a p90 shaped like a humbucker so you don't need to route your guitar. But changing the shape of the pickup changes the sound, so it's not quite like a true p90, it's got its own tone. Kind of a p90/humbucker blend. I like it, to be honest, but prefer regular p90s.

Since I have seen off models that look as good, but without Epiphone or Gibson or etc. labeling on the headstock - It looks like it would between $130 - $180. $400 at that point seems steep. Chinese made guitars are so high quality for the price these days. Cheap guitars used to mean bad guitars. But these days everything is so precise with machines, and you've got those PLEK machines that do 3D scans of the guitar and then it sets up the guitar way more perfectly than any human could, like down to fractions of a millimetre, setting up the action and the intonation and the truss rod etc. Harley Benton use those machines, it's probably a big part of how they have such good guitars for the price. It costs a good £200 or so to send your guitar to get it set up by a PLEK machine, but harley benton and other Chinese guitar manufacturers use them on every guitar they send out before anyone even buys them, only takes a few minutes for each one so why not
      Squier are making top quality instruments these days too, they probably have their own PLEK machine. When epiphone and squier are making better guitars than Gibson and Fender are a lot of the time now, you basically are only paying for the name on the headstock these days
