Thanks for the video man. Mine broke in roughly the same area as well, I used a plastic bond jb weld and it works mint now. Also fixed the lock cylinder from being seized too! Great insight 👍🏼
I have a 2001 wolfsburg 1.8t jetta and a 2002 2.0 jetta. Both of the cars have this problem and one of them has the keyhole problem. This video was extremely helpful. Thank you!
These are great, quick fixes for a problem that happens to so many people!
Thanks for the great repair solution. I’ll give it a try myself.
VW biggest flaw is aging plastic parts. 😂. I also had issues with plastic coolant system parts breaking, PITA!!!
Eleven months after the repair (mid March, 2022), the Jetta's trunk latch broke again, but not in the same spot! The first break was in the middle of the bracket. The second break occurred much higher, near the knob at the top. So in daily use, the glue job held, but the plastic did not. I could have also glued the second break, but since I already had a $30 repair kit on hand (the one shown in the video) I used it. So simple - just two screws, no disassembly of the latch mechanism. Honestly, it was a 15 minute job, and that included removing and reattaching the trunk liner. I've since bought a second $30 kit to have on hand, from just in case the trunk latch on my Golf breaks. I originally got both of mine from Amazon www.amazon.com/1999-5-2005-MK4-Jetta-Trunk-Repair/dp/B07V39LF5V but when I checked that page today , it says "currently unavailable." This looks like the same thing, though: www.jettatrunk.com/ I guess if I needed a third one, that's where I would go. Good luck. Thanks for commenting!
This is going to be fun… I have a giant subwoofer back there!!! So getting to the release latch should prove fun!

It seems the real problem is a design flaw with central locking motor. The rod coming out extends way to much resulting in breaking the plastic. Is there any way to limit rod movement?
An aftermarket actuator might work a little better in that regard but since that's not the part the breaks, I doubt that many people have looked into it. When my plastic piece broke a second time, it did not break where I had glued and reinforced it. It broke well above that spot, right at the hook on the top. I'm quite certain the plastic just got old and brittle. Thankfully, I had the $30 repair kit on hand. Installation was quick and easy. There have been no problems with the '00 Jetta trunk lock since then. I even bought a second $30 kit in case I experience the same failure on my '05 Golf. With new part on hand, it'll be an easy fix. No big deal!
How did you get to the latch? remove upholstery?
Yes. Very easy. Fold down the seats. Crawl into the trunk. Remove a few fasteners...
Can you post a link to the trunk repair kit ? I can’t seem to find it anywhere
I got both of mine from Amazon www.amazon.com/1999-5-2005-MK4-Jetta-Trunk-Repair/dp/B07V39LF5V (one for the Jetta and another for the Golf in case it should break, last one purchased April 12, 2021) but when I checked that Amazon page today, it says "currently unavailable." This looks like the same thing, though: www.jettatrunk.com/ I guess if I needed another one, that's where I would go. Good luck. Thanks for asking!
Update, December 2021 - Much to my surprise, the reinforced glue job shown here has survived the near 100 degrees F heat of summer and the cool down of fall. Both the Jetta's remote and the key cylinder on the trunk lid continue to work like new! Whether the reinforced glue job will survive the zero degree cold of winter remains to be seen, but so far, so good...
I'll try your fix this weekend! Thank you so much!
