Costner carefully considers things, from his choices in food, to his hiring practices for making movies (making teams).
He readily acknowledges that there are people who are better than him at something, but he won't let that stop him from having that person work with him. Rather than be intimidated, he celebrates and utilizes their gifts.
The rest is simply him talking about his work ethic, and how life is too short to be concerned about "what you know".
I think his message is about recognizing and embracing your limitations, using help when you need it, and living a good life.
They could have left the part out about the oil derricks, sailing ships and fighting. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the narrative.

+Sabatheus thanks for the thoughtful comment. We produced this piece in a fashion similar the the iconic What I've Learned profiles in Esquire; the ideas flow from one to the next. They are morsels of wisdom that drive these individuals.

Work hard, and cooperate so as not to be limited in your decisions. Appreciate the important things in life like family, music and reading. And still be humble and understand that you have more to learn.

How do we get things done? Make the smart kid do it!
... yup, because all the smart kids just love doing the work for you.
... because its an amazing way to make friends when you feel like you're being used rather than appreciated

MrCBroz my interpretation was that he meant we should know our limits and play to all our strengths, instead of being jealous of someone who's better at something you want to be really good at, learn from them. I hope he meant it like that

I hope so too. The classroom environment isn't the best place for avoiding your weaknesses. It's a place to challenge and overcome them, including by learning from peers.

Food is always a good thing to live by. But yeah some choices can be difficult but sometimes in my life it could be a hell of a choice cuz even though I don't come with a big appetite and sometimes food is always around me even when I'm drunk I can still eat food because food helps with alcohol it like absorbs it you know I'm saying.

I feel this new "it's all about wisdom" intro is pretentious and annoying. On one hand, it's not all wisdom. On another, if someone isn't going to take said wisdom, telling them it's wisdom won't make a difference.
