I most like that you are so through and deliberate and mention alternative tools that can be used for us guys that are just starting out and don't have access to all the tools of the trade.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing. I may never (well, at least not anytime soon) drill a ball myself, but it's good to understand the process so I know what my PSO is doing when he drills my ball.
14:36 I come back to this every time I drill a ball. Thank you JR
*This is the video that I’ve been waiting for!*
It's always good to see how other people do things. It makes you evaluate your own process and you can usually pick up a thing or two. I started drilling in the last year and I'm always looking for more ideas. Thank you, JR.
I don't even drill balls but it was interesting to learn the process. Thank you!
I would love to get into drilling and work in a pro shop. Just to be around things I love!
Thanks for sharing JR! Lots of great wisdom pal... am super keen to learn how to drill my own equipment. Much appreciated!
Sharing knowledge is such a great thing to do.
JR great video on drilling your own ball... Glad your uploading info like this... 👍🏽😊👌🏽
Same for me, been looking for some of these in depth drilling videos. Awesome info.
Love this series of videos
Great video mate. Learning heaps!
Thanks for doing this video. Very helpful to see how you do things your way.
I love the I am Second band. Thanks for the video
First time I’ve seen this, pretty cool! In my ignorance I thought they were manufactured already with the holes until I saw one today without them. Thanks for sharing this, pretty interesting!
This was very informative. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you JR i learned a while back. But i have drilled the fingers backward and actually drilled a V and broke out into the other finger. I am still learning but this video helped me alot
JR thanks for this type of video. I've been drilling for about 10 yrs but am always trying to learn new snd better ways. I picked up a couple of things from this video that should help. My biggest problem i have is the press is 100% manual. So the pitches and distances sometimes off a 16th-32nd. But keep this type of video because we can continue to learn. Thanks
Great vid.
I work for Lisa Bishop over here in Westland so I'm going to learn how to drill my own stuff and how to drill for other people. I like working in the shop because it doesnt feel like work. That and stuff is a lot cheaper. I understand how to draw out a layout with dual angles but havent done vector yet (not sure I will) and I'm also learning how to verify a ball's static weights.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I've always wanted to learn how to drill, bc I feel that everytime I go in and talk shop with my pro shop guy. I've no idea what he's talking about. Thank you so much J.R.
Thank you.
As a machinist by trade, I found this video very informative and interesting.
Not stupid at all, JR. I'm going to start assisting in a pro shop this summer, and while I'll learn this as I go, it's good to have an idea before I start.
You can just run 1 3/8" bit in the outter before you move the jig. It cleans up the outter perfectly as long as the mill doesn't have run out. A lot cheaper than the reamer bit.
Love switch grip! Best interchangeable thumb out there!
I just started bowling, so I'm new to all these concepts. My most recent ball I had drilled, they drilled directly into the pin. I thought it was strange. What does that mean? Is that a good thing, or a mistake by the pro shop?
Thanks! I've been drilling my own stuff for about 2 years, and getting some online help when I started proved challenging. You covered several key bases that should help most folks out. One thing I'd point out for new guys (unless I missed it) is you seemed to skip over your vacu-grip finger drilling. Really important to drill the larger hole @ layout, and then immediately drill the 31/32 without moving the ball, to depth. If you drill the big holes for both 1st, then try to recenter for the 31/32, it can be frustrating. Just a supplement, not a critique!
How did you get started drilling your own stuff? I would really like to because the places around me aren't great and don't use modern layouts they just place the pin above or below the bridge.
Thank you for the video JR! I have been wanting to learn how to drill a ball and pro shops are very "hush" on this...
Out of curiosity: Is there more than one way to do vacu grips? The pro shop I usually get my stuff drilled at places a plastic ring in the bottom of the finger hole and then glues the grip into that ring on the bottom as well as gluing the grip near the top. From what I see in your video, it seems like this is almost just a shortcut to avoid drilling the hole two different sizes??
Can you explain about static weight? Does topweight or certain cores effect the layout you can put on a ball? What do you do to combat having too much static weight? Do you vary the depth of the finger and thumbholes?
Anyone know where I can find those little magnets JR uses for lining up the edge of the bit to the line on the ball?
Sure a lot more detailed then when I had my first bowling ball drilled some 5O years ago
Hi JR how would you go about drilling your own equipment as someone who doesn't work in a proshop? I don't necessarily want to work in a proshop but none of the ones around me use any kind of layout system or look for bowlers PAP and I want to be able to help friends and family out by drilling their equipment better.
Good video..got a question about balls. I had a Hammer Arson and it cracked so I got a Fastpitch Storm and cannot get it to move as much, Did I buy the wrong ball? Thanks for your help....
I've been drilling my own equipment for about a year now. I have drill press from Home Depot. I had to figure out how get the pitches in the ball VERY manually! lol I've gotten pretty good at it and they're all comfortable, although a little different. I don't have a way to lock the ball in solidly enough to use a plug cutter, but it's fine for just drilling.
Within two months, I'll have a Jayhawk rig that will allow me to start putting in slugs and Switch Grips. Looking forward to help my students by also drilling their equipment.
For an upcoming video, can you discuss how to determine the best pitches for a particular hand?
This one is great, thank you!
Does the switch grip go straight in? If you want some angle, does the angle go in the slug?
Hi the magnet devise you used in the video what’s it called and where can I find it
Silly question, but when you move the jig to change the pitches, doesn't that also change the span as well? Is there a mathematical equation you use to tell you something like "If I go 1/4" left and 1/8" forward on my finger, then I need to lengthen/shorten my span XXX amount?"
LO I came here to see how you drill the hole, and you cover it with your hand holding the hoover
I know this is an old video but can you go more in depth about how to adjust depth if it is different. I moved and went to a different pso and he had absolutely no issue getting depth properly adjusted. Now that pso shut down shop. I went to a new pso and he can not get depth proper to save his life. Would you just use a dial caliper and measure the inside of an already installed outer, and then add the width of the plastic at the bottom?
My knuckles are killing me we’re are you at my pro shop just said I am getting old they didn’t hurt Before the replacement thumbs.
“Straight acrossed” or “straight acrosst”?
be carefull with the switch grip on my part a blew up those thump twice and if you play too much screw unscrew how a was doiing it in tournament the 2 lock pin in the bottom broke often
That 1 3/8 drill bit on the thumb... how deep was it?
Thank u so much... I didn't realize i grandfather had everything to drill ball in his basement.. I didnt even know he had a basement lol
What skills do I have when learning this? I'm missing the skill name...What am I good at?
The magnet devise what’s the name and where can I find it
Does it drill though the core?
Great video JR! I’ve been teaching myself to drill my own balls for a few months now. I was wondering if you based your finger pitches off the main center line or created a new one following the angle your fingers go into the ball? I have been drilling my thumb and fingers using totally different center lines.
What is your opinion on 3/8 left and 3/8 right in the fingers vs 0 in the middle and 3/4 right in the ring for a righty.. (or 1/8 left and 5/8 right) . Is there any difference in ball roll or track location?
Finger and thumb pitches all work together as a system. If the lateral pitches of the fingers are both moved the same amount they will have minimal effect on the track of the ball. They will however effect how your palm sits on the ball and how it feels in your hand especially if combined with thumb pitches that are not complimentary. Lineal pitches have more effect on the track when it comes to the fingertips.
After watching this, things make much mor sense to me. A few years ago I had my first two reactive balls drilled by a guy who didn't seem to have much experience. I didn't know any different at the time, but always knew the fit and measurement wasn't quite right. I've always dealt with it and thought it was me who needed to make adjustments with swing or approach to become better with the ball. Now, I understand that my fitment is totally screwed up and it's not necessarily me that needs to make adjustments. Now that I'm beginning to get more serious with the sport I want to get a few new balls drilled the right way. How do I find a shop pro I can trust to do it right next time?
What does a 1 inch reverse pitch do, does it make you have more revs or is it a comfort thing?
Reverse points away from the palm so it helps you get out of the ball faster. It can help with revs but not always. It can also help with comfort.
I might’ve missed why you do thumb first video? Enlighten me? Thanks
Because if you miss your line on the thumb, you will still have the correct span. Drill the thumb first, then measure the span from the front edge of the thumb.
What's your ball jig called? Seems way better to tilt the ball within the jig than to unclamp it to reposition it every time like we do at my bowling alley
That's a Jayhawk trioval jig
And I am lookingfor someone who know what they are doing when drilling a ball, I am in Seattel washington
Is drilling the pilot hole really necessary if the switch-grip bit already goes a quarter inch deeper with the point?
It is recommended by Turbo, of course with all things your mileage may vary.
Can you do oval thumbs with switch grips?
Yep
I'm not a PSO, but was shocked that you don't need/want more bevel on the fingers to prevent cracks.
Everyone has their own preferences and beliefs
Safety glasses?
How much extra does it cost to have a switch grip drilled vs a regular thumb slug?
B Fielder call your PSO and ask
@@bofadeeznuts469 I essentially just did minus the call part.
Seeing as cost will vary shop to shop just as with any other good or service in the world, call the shop you use and ask.
Im second too jr.
; )
I can't believe that nobody makes a "reasonably" priced ball jig for the home/do it yourself user. I think the demand would be there for something like that.
KTM ball jigs
But surely everyone has different finger lengths
I bet John from Innovative will cringe when he sees you using the quill as an arbor press. I do it all the time (for 30+ years) and never broke the press.
Jopo is better than turbo
In what metric? Jopo is good. I’d say equal in many ways. Not better
How to drill a bowling ball:
Step 1. Bring the ball to a pro shop.
Step 2: bowl with my other balls while waiting for drilling.
Step 3: bowl with newly drilled ball.
😄😁😆😅🤣
