Amost everyone saying everybody knew they were friends. I didn't! This piece was for those who didn't, and appreciated knowing. Thanks for sharing guys.
Thank you, me too.... its not that big of a deal that some of us didnt know( not that serious)..
Indeed. It’s also for us that didn’t know the extent of their friendship although we knew about it.
Judgement Awaits hell I didn't either and they lying ass didn't either 😂😂
I didn't either wow ! 😮
Ft tho. I had no idea they knew each other. Didn't know everyone else did either💯💯💯
Yo his impression of Red Foxx is spot on. "Hell, I would've joined the KKK if they had sandwiches". I'm dead lmao
GaryDomaz That part killed me! 😂🤣😂🤣
I busted out laughing
Nah!
That part killed me 😂😂😂 but yeah he did a great job.
That was a dumb joke, if that was supposed to be a joke.
My grandfather ran with them back in the days as well, he was the first person that ever spoke the names Detroit Red and (Chicago) Red to me. He worked in the kitchen trains with them on the New Haven Railroads. I've been telling people the stories for years, they all got along because how much they all favored (with the exception of my grandfather did not have red hair) and would play the "who's YOUR daddy" game. My grandfather, Henry Smith aka Smitty but at the time his nickname was "Jitterbug" (or Bug for short) because he was a dancer and also a pool hustler. He and Detroit Red used to hit the dance joints in Harlem. My grandfather went on to work door security for a few nightclubs and would let Redd through the back door and he'd be able to get on stage and work his stand up. Eventually my granddad joined the Army and went to war.
My grandfather passed away over a decade ago, while I was still in the Marine Corps, man do I miss his old stories. He would show me the pics of him and his old click all fly in their zoot suits with fly hats and big ass cigars. He told me how he met my grandmother because her sister (my great aunt) was his original dance partner. Lol
Love hearing old stories from actual people who knew of Redd Foxx when he Smiley Sanford aka Chicago Red. It's amazing what you can find scrolling the comment section - Thanks for sharing!
Keep representing that legacy, they were from the trenches yet understood to be Respected you have to earn yours.
Great hearing about your Grandad. Sneaking Foxx into a nightclub is believable, him being able to just get on stage & perform after..?
Thats harder to swallow
(Every old person embellishes in stories, this might be one)
Wonderful memories thanks for sharing.
WOW how lucky you are!!
I know it must've hurt Redd really deep when Malcolm was assassinated.

Malcolm X and Red Fox, two legends!
Two young men meet, walk the same path, later down the road, one young man goes one way, the other goes another way. Both start living lives that are polar opposites, both became legends in their own walks through life. That's a movie right there. Now I see where the name Sanford came from.
Yes.
I love Malcolm X even though I wasn’t even born yet when he passed away ..
Detroit and Chicago Red💯
In Malcolm's Autobiography it said Foxx nickname was St.Louis Red
St.louis not Chicago he from the north of stl
Facts
@@allenwood3805 Thats not true AT ALL. The autobiography states that there were 3 'reds" Detroit, St Louis, and Chicago Red. Chicago Red is Redd Foxx. St Louis Red was an armed robber, and Detroit Red was Malcolm.
History
That's crazy Redd Foxx's real last name was Sanford. That's where the show's title came from.
His character was named after his brother.
@@Batman88878 And it was inspired by the British show Steptoe and Son.... But it was better than that show.
@@alwaysastudent , never saw Steptoe and Son. Was curious to see it, but come on! Fred G. Sanford! He's the man!
@@Batman88878 Yes, Sanford and Son was better than Steptoe and Son. It had comedy, but some social commentary occasionally as well.
You big dummy
The voice imitation of REDD‼️😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Pretty Good 🤣❣️
That's an interesting story! Malcolm X and Redd Foxx were brothers during that time and now they became legends by making a good name for themselves. They were brothers by looking out for each other thick and thin. 👍This is why I love my culture in black history!
this actually brought a tear to my eye how people can meet and be one way then completely change their lives and meet again so different..this was inspiring
I did read Malcolm's autobiography, but it was many years ago. I didn't remember that they knew each other. We don't always remember all the bits and details of everything we read. It's cool. It happens. I don't understand why there's so much judgement and grandstanding in the comments, putting down people who didn't know and assuming they don't read... Anyway, thanks for the video.
True i read it also and dont remember the mention of their friendship...everybody wants to be Furious Styles....
“ read black people” lol
Hey Anova what's good?
True, I read the book too, but didnt remember.
Yall didn't read throughly
I have a picture of them together. Redd Foxx was my cousin.

The fact that you read it in Redd's voice made it even more entertaining xD
The Redd Foxx impersonation is amazing even his short laughter. Right on point.
Disagree
I totally agree!
@@sonofTMHYAH you don't know red Foxx or Fred Sanford then
He did pretty close enough considering his natural voice ain't that deep and raspy as reds.
This almost brought me to tears. Thank God for both these brothers.
“Unknown” ONLY to people who didn’t read The Autobiography Of Malcolm X 🤨
Yes yes yes 😐
Bryce Clemons What other books have you read? None, Right? Thought So!
Most people never read Malcom's autobiography.
SUGARBEAR911 you’re ASSuming wayyyy more than you should. Be quiet child, just be quiet....
@@HypnoticHollywood you can't be serious!!! The book has been in print since 1965, it was name ten of the most important non-fiction books of the 20th century by TIME magazine, it sold over 6 million copies & one of the most read Autobiographies of all time.
Everytime I hear this it's so amazing. Their paths crossed so beautifully. Both transforming their experiences into something great. That Harlem life in the 20's to the 40's, seemed so live. Beautiful black women and men walking around with hopes, dreams and ambition. Whether it worked out for them or not, it seemed like a beautiful time❤
I love this channel!!!lord I loved the voice of Foxx that was funny and on point
The realest people you'll ever know are those bonds formed before any kind of success. Once you've grown your fame and people know your name, you never get the same opportunity to just know and connect with people in the same way.
Heartfelt WORD. Rare are friendship relationships that stand the test of time. I think we're all looking for that connection that's found in the eternity Yah has placed in our hearts.
Wow, his friendship with Malcolm X sounds a lot like Malcolm X’s friendship with “Shorty” Jarvis.
Meka J they should have had somebody act as red foxx in the movie
@David Ortiz maybe shorty was Redd Foxx
Meka J When the autobiography is a lie that happens
Shorty's a real person. I saw a interview with him
Shorty is not a made up character. Shortys real name is Malcolm Jarvis. He and Malcolm were arrested together in Massachusetts.
All praises Due to Ancestor Malcolm X
Redd Foxx: In New York, I slept on the roof.
Demond Wilson: Well what did you do when it rained?
Redd Foxx: I ain’t go home!
🤣🤣🤣 I love that story from Unsung Hollywood! RIP Redd Foxx and RIP Malcolm X!
Prison probably saved Malcolm's life..
mynameisirrelevant ! His life was still ended
It really did! We wouldn’t have had him if he didn’t go through that!!
Save his life? He was gunned down because of his life
@@IChooseGod365 you COMPLETELY missed the point 🙄... death is inevitable for EVERYONE. The difference is how we live our lives, and the impact that we make in life, before we die.

This is a feel good video. Thank u I needed this
Why they Left out TK Kirkland?
He was the one who first told Red Fox to go work a Jimmy’s chicken shack and introduced him to MalcomX

I learned something new today therefore I'm greatful... 2 great men.
I think most people knew this by now but I still appreciate this kind of content. Also Bumpy Johnson was linked with Malcom.
I'm a black person that read a lot and I didn't know this. It doesn't matter if you knew this or not, just be thankful we have someone telling black history.
This needs to be a netflix series......on gawd
I agree!
True that. I would watch it
That friendship was in the autobiography of Malcolm X.Read Black people. You will learn a lot.
Facts
That was the 1st thing I thought when I saw the title to this video. “UNKNOWN”?!?! What are they gonna make a video about next? He changed his name to El Hadj Malik El Shabazz? He was light-skinned & had red hair?
Must read FACTS.
@@BC-gn1vo Malcolm was named Malik Shabazz by Elijah Muhummad.

I didn't know they was friends. This information is new to me.
Abel Lewis read the auto biography of Malcolm X. He talks about Chicago Red the dishwasher aka Redd Fox
@@Miguel-gx5tu Denzel Washington played Malcolm X in a movie. How come their friendship wasn't mentioned in that movie?
Same reason why forest gump didn’t go into outer space in the movie just like he did in the book. No room

Sad to hear..but at least your honest...so we can grow. The lack of historical knowledge is an weak link.
*Malcolm Little (Detroit Red), John Sanford (Chicago Red), Reynaldo Rey (Oklahoma Red) all crossed paths in Harlem*
I love both of these guys...but Malcolm, now that’s some deep right there.
they look like brothers....
IKR!! Their eyes &noses match!!
They look nothing alike outside of their red complexions. Malcolm X was tall and handsome, with nice features. Redd Fox not so much, he was funny tho.
@@Bonnie79 they look alike...
I had a hard time wrapping my head around that when I read it in the Autobiography. Detroit Red and Chicago Red. I don't remember Redd Foxx really speaking on it.
I forgot about this. I read it in the book many years ago. Most people only know the serious side of Malcolm also but I saw the funny side of him in Alex Haley’s book. When they tried to draft him into the army, he acted insane so they would not enlist him and it worked. That was one of the funniest paragraphs I have ever read in a book till this day. Lol. I also admire his discipline so much. I wish I could get to his level.
Rey Jeff My funniest was when they tried to put the perm in their head that stuff like to burn the heck out of them!
Everyone claims to already know this. I think this video will help educate people that didn't read the book.
Thank you for making this video, attempting to spread education that is beneficial to all that is willing to watch for 5:57.
Hopefully this encourages people to read Malcolm X's autobiography.
Malcolm's mugshot is striking at 5:57. I've never seen it before. The right pic says a lot about his character before the conversion, clear photography.
This was dope!!! The untold story of Red Foxx & Malcolm X. Corey Zooman Miller is a great narrator. He should do a series of these!
Harlem was a relatively small and tight knit community until the late 1960’s.
My parents lived there during the 1940-50’s and can recall interaction with you name it... even Jimi Hendrix
at Smalls Paradise,etc.
Sitting next to Joe Louis at the Apollo for instance,
talk to any Harlem old timer and you’ll hear the same type of story.
That’s just the way it was back then.
I'm not Black, but I used to watch Tony Brown's Journal years ago, and what a lot of his guest use to talk about was that young people need positive role models. That flew by me, nice but pie-in-the-sky... Then I was watching an interview with Jackie McLean and it hit me that New York was a draw for talent and that any Black person who wanted to make it big wound up in Harlem back in the day. It was not uncommon for ordinary people to rub shoulders with talent. Willie Mays used to play stick ball with the local kids when the Giants were still in NY.
Thurgood Marshall lived in Sugar Hill. Practically all the great jazz musicans used to live there. It must have been an amazing place. I've grown up and lived in Los Angeles all my life.
It's a city that draws talent. And I've meet no one. So jealous...
K Lee LA is a big area geographically speaking so I can understand what you are relating.
I caught the very tail end of “old Harlem” late sixties before the heroin plague...going to the Apollo and shopping on 125th street still there but very different vibe now.
My parents could not walk a full block without stopping and greeting someone they’d known for years the high and the low.
People walked back then weather permitting.
Excellent!!! Thank you for this piece of Black History!
A lot of black folks ran in the same circles back when people actually socialized with each other. Chicago Redd and Detroit Red.
Dam look how far society has degenerated too. I feel you, its a shame how cold & callace this 🇺🇸 society is now. A cryin shame

Malcolm X had lots of black friend too, no one was more heart broken then the black community when Malcolm x lose his life, he has an educator always finding better way, but people know days forgot what he stand for as he stood for improving human quality, better friends are people that make you feel that you are not alone. for what you are achieving , doing the right thing.

Thank you for putting this on this platform so I can share it with others that may not about it. Like many of the others, I already knew about it, but unlike others that have commented, I am not so elitist that I’m going to accuse others of not reading. Personally, I had never heard any of it from Redd Foxx’s point of view. Ironically, I searched for this very information the other day on this platform, and couldn’t find a thing. Some people can be so ridiculous. If you knew it and didn’t want to see it again, move on to something else. Don’t sit here and attempt to put down the folks that either didn’t know it, or didn’t “read” it. Information can be gained and shared many ways.....not just by reading.
