I am relatively new (5 years) to Bonsai, though I have gardened and cared for (mostly) fruit trees much longer. I started my bonsai practice on a steady diet of Heron's Bonsai videos, because they are confidence-building for beginners, but since I discovered yours, and moved into "begintermediate" status with my trees, you are my new favorite content creator. Your instruction is clear, concise, heavy on the "why" which I find very helpful, and low on condescension (also very helpful). I find myself very drawn to oaks, which have wonderful flexibility in young limbs, adaptability to conditions when it comes to leaf size, and present such a rugged strong profile. But I also find them surprisingly finicky, and have suffered some heart-breaking losses of oaks I was developing. I was wondering if you could make an instruction video particularly to address the harvesting (or down potting) and care of taproot trees, like oaks, who's strength lies in their ability to send powerful roots deep, and who can behave like Sampson with his hair cut off when you sever those taproots. How do I get them to develop a web of shallow roots and be happy in a pot? (PS... I am in a hot dry summer, cool wet winter, frost but no snow, coastal climate)

This was one of the most helpful videos I’ve seen on how to prune a bonsai. Especially a late stage one. Thank you. I’m going to put these techniques to practice immediately on my 18 year old white pine bonsai.

Another excellent video Jelle. I'm still building my knowledge with pines so anything like this I will watch 'over and over' :)

Great Video! I was wondering how I could increase the candle size of pines? In my collection I have a JWP and a Dwarf Mugo.

Perfect timing Jelle - I was just thinking when the best time to prune would be. Does this timing also work for gradually reducing sacrifice branches and pushing growth lower down?

1 how often you can do such pruning?
    2. The needles are very short. Do you apply fertilizers? When, which, how?
