This video tells us about the weird Santa Fe Railroads "Flexible Boiler" Mallet which was based on a 2-6-6-2 kit bash design of combining two 2-6-2 Prairie type locomotives.
What an absolute clusterfuck these things were. They were so close and yet si far.... I bet they were pissed when it took a frenchman to crack the code!
Saw this loco mentioned in a book in the 1960s and wondered about them. I'm amazed that RR in the USA didn't adopt the Garratt loco which has advantage in terms of simplicity and large boiler capacity.
Considering where ATSF ran those things, everything out there was converting to oil by the 1920's anyway. They ran west out of Wellington before that like line was a transcon. The Belen cutoff didn't come along till about 1929 or so.
If these units were successful, they could be nicknamed the "Betty Boops"! Does anyone else remember the old Betty Boop cartoons featuring steam trains?!
