Picked up a green 2" 3M roloc bristle disc last year and I'm in love with it. It takes crap, paint, rust, and mill scale off steel easily and several times more quickly than anything I've previously tried.
So basically what you're telling me is that these bristle discs are the bee's knees? The kitten's mittens? The pig's figs? They also seem to double as a musical instrument of unrivaled, melodious beauty! Thanks for the demo hombre!
i just ordered the white and yellow ones to help with cleaning the cyl. head/block mating surface for this 5.3 ls going in my truck. thanks for the informative vid..i needed to see how others were cleaning aluminum like intakes and heads. thumbs up.
I've only used the "sandpaper" and "scotch" pad type ROLOC pads, but just ordered some of these in green and yellow on the recommendation of a fellow mechanic. I find that more air AND the use of a RIGHT ANGLE die grinder make these work a lot better and are easier to control.
Been a 3 day project slowly scraping away at my vstars clutch cover, And crank case. every single peice of the gasket is super adheared and will not come off and this is the most stubborn bike I've ever worked on. I normally use gasket remover or acetone and a blade but I have been being very careful as to not ruin mating surface so this is what I need
Thanks. I would love to see which ever one works on a painted steel surface that has gotten quite rusty and requires both rust and paint to be removed before priming and repainting. It is mostly tool cabinets and shelf standards. It is no car but if I go too coarse, I wonder if I will have to follow up with finer brush before i paint and prime. There are also the "scotchbrite" type wheels. How do they compare for service life and speed for paint and rust removal. 3M makes a purple one and Norton's is gold. Neither lists the grit but they look pretty coarse. There are also other grits in the pad style. Both the brushes and the pads also come in wheel style.
I know he says "grit" in the video (everyone says grit, Ford Motor Co. even says "120 grit"), but the white are "120 grade." I don't know what 120 grade is, you'd have to ask 3M. Ford Workshop Manuals for later model vehicles call specifically for the "3M Roloc...2 inch, white..." bristle brush. Ford cautions that they are the only tool that can be used for cleaning the mating surfaces and old gasket off of things like aluminum front engine covers, i.e., the timing chain covers.
I've used the flat pads on my roloc, but never these bristle pads. Have you used the pad? How to they compare to the bristles? I use an angle die grinder for more control, give one a try.
What are the pros/cons of these versus the scotchbrite-type surface conditioning pads on a 2" roloc disc? Which would be better for tile cleanup or cleaning up non-machined aluminum castings?
at what point do you realize what you actually need is a surface decking... that left side is probably a few thou low after all that ape grinding you did... sure your gasket will probably save you for a while but you're ignorantly delaying the inevitably.
Not trying to be a jerk..but you must have been doing something wrong? Maybe not enough air pressure?...a razor blade is my choice only if nothing will fit in a tight spot, and I use a single edge blade with my bare fingers 😤
I worked in a shop for a couple years before and got made fun of for wearing a mask even after I explained that working as a mechanic is one of the most cancerous jobs there is due to all the shit we breath and touch. ignorance is bliss I guess
Hearing loss is cumulative... it eats away your hearing a little at a time. After a lotta years... most of my buddies older than me have hearing aids, and they aren't cheap. Wearing "Hear Muffs" may look dorky, but you will appreciate it later ;-)

@@BobSmith-mc7uq You got that right. Ear doctors have hundreds of thousands of patients who spent their work lives in shops, not wearing hearing protection. I'm one of them. Wear the damn ear muffs....hell, you can listen to music on them now, so I'd wear them anyway just for that

Boy, these comments are priceless. You're changing the world people! Get that anger out on someone trying to be helpful.

Exactly the info I was looking for... couldn't even find the application info on the 3M site... thank you and well done!!!

Great video, thanks :) wouldn't mind seeing the other grit discs in action to see how aggressive they are
Brilliant. Used to use these 20 years ago but at todays prices I won’t be using them again

Well I'm sold. Time to purchase one.

Man channeling some Eddie Van Halen on that intake manifold.
The purple is 36 grit, green is 50, yellow is 80, white is 120.
Not grit...grade
would a regular die grinder say from lowes or home depot work with the shaft for the bristle disc??
I've used the flat pads on my roloc, but never these bristle pads. Have you used the pad? How to they compare to the bristles? I use an angle die grinder for more control, give one a try.
Nice finish after it was done! Seemed like it wasn't very aggressive, though. AND that's a RH thread - not LH..
3M also has 25.4 mm width Roloc bristle discs. Would these be useful too? Or would you need more than 20,000 rpm for them to become effective?
Just ordered some of these myself to try, do I need safety glasses too?

These don't clog up
It's right hand thread
great but where to buy them.
Can I attach this to an impact driver if I don’t have an angle grinder
Drills are not fast enough. Look at the speed range of drills and drivers compared with die and angle grinders.
Do these SCRATCH the metal in ANY WAY? Looks like they do but very minimal.
Yes they do, they contain abrasives. Anywhere a flat surface is needed, like in shown in the video, these shouldn't be used. Otherwise they are great
Very good video, but I don’t think that’s left hand thread.
Sorry, that's not a left-hand thread. It's a right-hand thread.
Anyone know where i can buy these locally? They seem a little pricey on Amazon.
Much appreciated.

They are $14 for a pack of 2 green ones here: www.amazon.com/dp/B01E612L3M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_x9Z9CbFPQBP7Y
Check your local snap on truck for these if you think amazon is expensive
Local paint auto paint supply store
I get these for 2 dollars a piece off the snap on truck and they're like 6 to 9 online. Doesn't make any sense
Not 3M's, you don't
does menards sell this?

When white becomes silver, you know you're taking metal off!
You need safety glasses with this operation.
Was not impressed, I tried this on a dirt bike case gasket it did not work well, a razor blade was more affective
Not trying to be a jerk..but you must have been doing something wrong? Maybe not enough air pressure?...a razor blade is my choice only if nothing will fit in a tight spot, and I use a single edge blade with my bare fingers 😤
Nothing like using a die grinder on dirty aluminium and not wearing a respirator.
Smart.
Stop being such a woman

Good video but who the hell wears ear muffs using a die grinder bro lol it ain't gonna rupture you're ear snares
Seth C He's obviously using it because of the air compressor. Besides, its just a video...you have the option not to watch...(i'm just saying) 😃🙄

Yes it most certainly will. You always need ear protection with power tools, unless it's just a cordless drill

120 grit circular sanding discs run arbitrarily on gasket surfaces? What a kook. DONT DO THIS PEOPLE.
letz git weird
They work great as you can see. Used them for years without issue.
Not grit grade
These aren't sanding grit discs 😵
subaru and ford both recomend them for gasket prep,. you dont know what you're talkin about mate.
