Kelly Clarkson has a song about how her then-husband showed her love where her father failed her. Although she and her husband have since divorced, we Christians could still listen to that song with the perspective of, “I have a blueprint on how to uphold the love described in this song even though the writer did not.” No need to be the SNL church ladies about our music selection 😂

To be honest, I believe there are more concerns about the current state of Christian music today than secular music.
I say that not because secular music is harmless, I completely agree with this video on how disgusting so much of it is. Christians should definitely have nothing to do with the darkness that is so much of the secular music industry.
My greater concern is with Christian music because the bad, even heretical, theology so many popular Christian songs contain cannot be dismissed.
Secular music that is sexual and profane and makes no claim to honour God and that is performed by artists who do not care about God, that type of music is quite overtly something that Christians should avoid.
However, much of the most popular Christian songs today are either vain, mindless repetition or they actually include lyrics that are blasphemous.
How can a Christian listen to or sing such songs about even God Himself, with the claim that they are worship songs? It is not worshipping God to sing things that are untrue about Him.
And when we consider the most popular Christian artists today, like Hillsong and Jesus Culture, we need to look at where they come from.
Churches like Hillsong, Bethel (Redding) and Elevation have used their music to spread their dangerous theology into churches that would otherwise never consider some of the claims they make.
Spiritually speaking, I am gravely concerned for the false light that exists in the Christian music arena today. So many people have been truly deceived by it.
The current news (which isn’t really new) around Hillsong is just one example.
Music is powerful. It draws us in. It plays with our emotions. Emotion can be good, but we cannot let it lead us.
There are a number of Christian songs I could love for their emotion and melody, the way they make me feel. But, their theology is so far off I know that it does not glorify God. They should not even be called Christian in the first place.
I hope that more and more Christians can also warn about the serious, spiritual dangers of so-called Christian music. It’s so very important, because we claim that it is a form of worship.

      @Loctician Před 2 lety +2

Yeah I see your point but seccular music has way more deeper concerns considering many Christian’s listen to secular music and it’s been normalized the aspect of some Christian’s songs being wrong can only be realized when they also realize seccular music is bad you see what I mean ?
Cause we can’t be bopping to songs that glorify sin but then condemn some Christian songs
Not saying your calling secular music good but I do know that secular music is a very large concern as the seccular music industry is one of if not the most influential industry on this earth

    • @EelhsaM
      @EelhsaM Před 2 lety

@@Loctician, I definitely did not call secular music good; you can read my comment again to see what I wrote. Although it’s worth noting that not all secular music is the same.
Understanding that there are major problems with so-called Christian music can be done, and, I would argue must be done as a priority. We can do this as a separate issue from secular music.
I would suggest that it’s actually important that Christians get their own house in order. It seems rather disingenuous to condemn secular music, however correct our statements may be, but not deal with issues within the professing church.
And I would emphasize that heretical, blasphemous music being claimed as worship of God is far more dangerous, spiritually speaking, than secular music that is overtly evil. The reason is because this pseudo-Christian music is false light and deception. It can creep in and catch us unaware if we don’t remain vigilant and contend for the truth.
Bands like Hillsong, Jesus Culture and Elevation have introduced their music to the church at large, in many countries, and their music has been a gateway to many false teachings. On the surface it seems good, but it is not.
Unlike with secular music, Christian music is supposed to be a form of worship. This is why it’s absolutely dangerous and we must be aware of what is truly happening spiritually.

Even if the music doesn't have sexual lyrics, or explicit words, if the song is vapid or vain, and holds no substance, then it is not worthy. If they use blasphemy ("Oh my ___") it's also a red flag. I have been struggling lately, after cutting it out I have been falling back into watching K-pop. They are called "idols" and it's so obvious what the agenda is.
But again, even if the music isn't sexual or has explicit language, it might not be good for you. Read the lyrics and ask God to help give discernment. I also ask God to please give me strength to reject that which does not help me grow. And I hope this is food for thought for someone else.

Elvis’s gospel music especially sticks out to me, it isn’t boring, like some Christian music tends to be. Some recommendations for anyone who cares are “How Great Thou Art” “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Peace in the Valley.” Secular music simply makes me uncomfortable to listen to if it had vulgar lyrics or messages. Thank you for this. Isaac. Often times I feel like secular music can be good, but it matters what’s in the song itself as for the lyrics. I also find that a melody or beat can be incredibly catchy or addictive, and yet the singer can justify his or her writing into something almost like a trend that makes people follow along in their footsteps. When I listen to favorite secular songs, I don’t tend to do what the artist is singing or rapping about, but I do like secular. Although I do listen to Christian music, I do like The Gray Havens and Kings Kaleidoscope as my favorite artists to listen to if I’m in the mood to listen to them. I find their music to be comforting and catchy, and a lot of their music really is. Often times, I feel like The Gray Havens’ music and messages are folky and Indie which I love, because I find that music relaxing whenever I’m by myself. It’s still Christian, but they do have secular themes in their songs as well. They do talk about colors, birds, kingdoms, castles, etc. They also covered ‘Blackbird’ by The Beatles and ‘Pure Imagination’ by Gene Wilder. But It still intrigues me that Christian artists like them sometimes don’t sound Christian. Example: they may sound secular genre wise and lyrical wise, but that’s normal. And although I do appreciate Christian music, I do think that they both have talent. I’m also finding that Christian Indie Pop artists are also extremely talented and worth listening to, like Jonathan Allen Wright. It’s definitely a joy to listen to new artists that can pave the way for new listeners. I have tremendous respect for all of them.

Also, Romans 14. Its about holidays and food, but I think the principle is relevant--if you're convicted by it, don't do it because it's not of faith. If you're not convicted by it, don't be a stumbling block to your brothers and sisters who are.
Personally, my music "diet" has been strict, especially because I know how easy it is for me to get into the feelings and emotions of it. So I just try to stick to praise and worship and even my consumption of that is regulated (like you said, there's good and bad Christian music lol)

If the Holy Spirit tells you to stop listening. Stop. I have my favorites from when I was a teenager, some from my 20’s, and now 30’s. Drastically different but it’s what God convicts us of.

I don't like dropping a one-size-fits-all approach to this. Christians need to be careful about what they listen to, but just because music isn't "Christian" doesn't mean it should be avoided at all costs. There's a lot of good tame non-Christian music out there. But there's also a lot of gross music out there as well.

Having not watched/listened the video yet:
It depends on what it is. There's no one-size fits all answer. You could even argue some so-called "Christian" music may not actually be. On the other hand, there's some secular music that isn't all that bad either. You can't just take a one-size fits all answer to this.
On the other hand, there's a lot of extremely obvious garbage in secular music, too, that should be avoided at all costs. Other things may be more on the fringe and you don't notice it as much unless you listen really close to the lyrics.

    "Hyperbolic"-you got it.
    Shout out to some Indy!
Music helps to shape what stays on the mind, how we see the world, and even our worldview if we are not guarded.
Regular check-ins suggested here with a "where I'm at" heart-wise self-examination especially, but also emotionally and even stress-wise, regarding the influence of this specific input we are welcoming or passively permitting that frequently subtly shifts our frame of mind from one minute to the next.
Red flags on each person's spiritual sensitivity to music and lyrics (outside of blatantly sinful lyrics we should obviously not give room for in the first place) are: a major drop-off in prayer, Bible reading, or hikes in pride issues.
Bottom line for me looks something like: assume responsibility for myself and my own closeness with Jesus over my commitment to a certain misplaced loyalty concerning any artist/music scene/genre/fill-in-the-blank. Each of us will stand before God, alone, and give an account. Best to make sure we take that seriously. We are meant to be salt and light, we are meant to be set apart, we are meant to be in not of this world and all it's "cool with", and that distinction should show.

I don't know what to do anymore. Im very careful about not allowing her to be an influence on me, but I love her so dearly, and am really concerned. Rightly said. Music that clearly edifies wrong or negative things should be avoided. For the music that comes under the grey area we have to discern each for ourselves what effect it's having on us. For e.g. kpop. This genre mostly doesn't have explicit content in the lyrics nor in the videos. Still there is mounting danger here. Fans of kpop get addicted to it, I think it has a lot to do with the singers. They're literally called idols, so that's a red flag right there. In earlier yrs kpop was more about the music which was fine. In recent yrs kpop has become more about the idols who sing, dance & perform the songs. If you'll look at the comments made by a lot of kpop fans, they're more about the idols. Comments like "so handsome/pretty, so hot, so $exy, he/she makes me feel this that, he/she could slap me, walk over me & I'll thank them, he/she is my world, my life, my everything, I can't live without him/her" etc. These are the heartfelt comments from fans & many of them are kids & teenagers. It's sick, how they've been affected. More like how they let the idols affect them like this. The fans justify it saying these groups make music with positive, uplifting, healing lyrics & they sing about important stuff, they save people. It's just an excuse to continue their addiction to the idol. There are fans who watch these idols for hours together every day. They cant go a day without seeing them, thinking about them, talking about them. So many parents & families are worried seeing the trance that these fans are in. This is a big culprit in leading people away from from God. These fans base their sanity & solace & strength on these idols. Word of God clearly says 'Cursed is the one who trusts in flesh'. These souls are in danger but they don't want to hear it. One can enjoy the 'good safe songs' without getting attached to the singers. Attaching ourselves to the singers is something we shouldn't do in any case whether it is Christian music or secular music. All our love & life & the throne of our hearts must belong only to the Lord. Hope this issue is touched upon as well someday by someone.

My music choices has definitely changed as I have grown in spirit and truth. The conviction felt from listening to my pre-faith is real. As has the revelation gained from artists who do it for the art.
Movie Soundtrack scores are an excellent example. No lyrics, but it might be done by a secular composer or in a worldly movie.
Interstellar, Gladiator, Braveheart, The Last Samurai. Beautiful compositions.
Lecrae, Phanatic and Lauren Daigle are the flipside to that coin.
Just cause someone says Jesus, while others make music in worldly movies; both can be examples of folks who worked entirely hard to make.

This has got to be one of the Oldest Longest Tired Debates that rages on throughout history so I'm gonna make a Disclaimer warning for the following as I've had this Debate heaps of times by both other Christians & non-Christians alike: The Following Comment will Offend some of you!
My Simple reply to this video & indeed the topic at hand is this: Music is Music its what you do with it that counts
As an Artist, Singer/Songwriter/Musician Ive had so many people try to tell me what I should or should not do & this is one of the most frustrating things to have to endure both from the artist point of view, as a fans point of view & the Industry point of view, let alone the Christian perspective, All of us are Made in the Image of God, he Creates therefore we create following the model of creation, its unfortunate that as time has gone on the World has gone away from the God of the Bible & as a result things are getting worse in this Sin sick filled world following the Religion of Self (if I can use the expression)
From an Artist point of View we create Music often as an expression of how we are feeling &/or telling a story what the recipient does with what we create is out of our hands, now does that mean that we should be creating content that is Destructive to the recipient deliberately without any consequences? No thats not what Im saying at all! but we should be careful of what we allow the recipient to be exposed to (side note: Ive written heaps of songs that are very personal to me but would never allow the public to hear) same can be said about the Positive aspect of Content we release often what 1 person perceives as positive may potentially be negative to someone else
From the Christians Perspective I do agree we should try to be Mindful of what we allow ourselves to be exposed to Bad is Bad there is no getting around that but just as there have been THOUSANDS of Hymns written which are extremely bad Theologically, There are also THOUSANDS of Good songs which are secular in nature that are here nor there, sometimes we write songs to express how we feel & it may be about an emotional situation we have gone through & because we have gone through it that May help someone else cope, we have written about our experiences that someone else is going through the same thing, How many songs have been written about the topic of Love? just to make a point, Ive often Said that songwriters are the Voice to those who have no voice, often people are not good at articulating their feelings toward a person about their emotions or how they feel about a particular topic so they use a song they heard that captured the essence of what they were feeling at the time to express to another person by means of Communication in song form, sometimes you could write a song about Politics or something silly like a comedy song or maybe songs for children perhaps the possibilities are Endless!
At the end of the Day we are all accountable to the Lord Jesus Christ about everything we do, say, think & act, I believe there is Nothing wrong with creating content even if it is secular in nature so long as it is not with the deliberate intentions to harm or allow harm come to someone else, after all Art is expressed in many different forms & often an Artist creation will at times be misunderstood or misinterpreted to the recipient (I always try to be very clear in all my presentations of what it is so that there is no misunderstanding of the content being presented) Sure the idea of promoting Sin in any way just to sell a product is a very poor excuse to be selling art & Im in no way condoning this should be the approach but as I said at the start from an Artist Point of View Music is Music & its what you do with it that counts I stand by my comment, I know what the Bible teaches & am always constantly learning - I hope this comment has helped someone understand that this is not always a black & white issue we are all allowed to have differing point of view on this issue - use your own Discernment & align yourself with what the Bible teaches, God Bless folks

Paul talks a lot about the theme of faith in one’s heart in the book of Romans and that each person should aligned with the will of God Romans 14:17 the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating or drinking but righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. And if we doubt in our minds that it is not aligned with the will of God (which we can check with the Bible and through prayer) we should not do it Romans 14:23 - what is not of faith is sin. I think having personal conviction and seeking understanding from God first and foremost is most important. Please pray for me.
I've been really struggling to find what I should listen to and what not to.
I was raised with the doctrine that all rock/contemporary music is sinful and not pleasing to God, because it's chaotic and not orderly like what all the other creations of God reflect.
I'm now an adult and still can't find in the Bible where I could state certain music played by a certain instrument or arrangement is sinful, so I'm at a loss.
What I am convinced of is that sexually explicit songs and musical sounds associated with or that imply sexual acts are subjectively wrong. However, I can't really say contemporary music is wrong.
What makes me unsure still, is that I can't worship in church to drums or electronic guitar music for some reason. I'll go to a friend's church that plays loud rock music and I can't focus to worship God.
I know I have a preference of music, but I want to know if it's more than just a preference and not God leading me to the music He approves of and not others.
I personally love classy music like jazz, 40s and 50s songs, but also like some of today's. I just don't know what of today's music is acceptable and what's not.

Some people have also tried dictating which genres are acceptable. I do prefer some genres of Christian music over others. Some of my fellow Christians cringe when I put on Stryper or Holy Soldier simply cause they don’t like rock/metal, has nothing to do with the lyrics.

I mostly listen to power metal. It's a sub-genre of metal characterized by fantastical themes of dragons, heroes, saving the day, and just basic sword n sorcery. The messages are always "Never give up," "Good always wins," and some are stealth-christian songs if you look into the lyrics (Songs that take inspiration from the bible but without mentioning the name "jesus") Like the song "keeper of the seven keys" by helloween I feel is heavily inspired by the book of revelations.

Right. When that beat drops, there aren't many paying attention to the lyrics. We say we like songs when what we really mean at times is that we like beats.

I absolutely love hiphop but it can often be explicit and vulgar. I still listen to different forms of it because it can be very creative and inspiring at times, while sounding great.

Most of the music I listen to is instrumental. Its all just beeps and boops, and other instruments. Anything that does have lyrics is not anti-biblical/explicit, but I will be honest and say I rarely listen to Christian music in my down time.
Either way I do understand the importance of music. This is why one of my life goals is to learn how to compose. Its not what I want to do for a job in life, as ive found writing music to be frustratingly hard to wrap my head around, but it is something I want to do in life, because music is almost spiritual in nature, and thats something I want to contribute to in some way. But I just dont see myself writing worship music necessarily, just instrumental.

Could someone help me, I listen to Doja cat and she’s my current favorite artist and has been for years, and I would say I’m serious about Christianity and I actually searched for this video specifically because of the Doja cat title, her music just hits me so differently compared to other artists and there’s no Christian music or non pornographic type music online like hers, does anyone know what I can do? I’ve been praying over it a while and would appreciate help

I think this is kinda easy in case of songs that have lyrics. But there are genres where often people make songs without lyrics. And this is honestly something where I have no idea whether that is okay or not.

    •  Před 2 lety

Interesting. I didn't try that yet. I mostly listen to christian music now, but not exclusively.
