I have 2 w163 (ML270CDI & ML500 and 1 w164 ML280CDI. I preferrhe 270cdi. The v8 has all the muscle but my remapped 270 has more grunt. The 270cdi is on 285/75r17 mud tyres with 2inch body lift and front and rear bumpers are off. 😊 awesome car. But i dont like the w164.

@@thebitterhiker yes I have taken it "off-road" to test the drive system. My conclusion was having the AMG disc f/r helped the "diff locking" and the fuel tank is about the lowest points and will shred the tank strips or crack the tank. Its ongoing project overland vehicle for my dream trip England to south Africa and some friends who have riden the journey saw a few burnt MLs w163. So upgrading parts I have but not fitted include large intercooler, rear mount turbo and all fluid system will get its own air2air cooling systems. List I need include injector upgrades to om648 (blacksmoke racing) etc for high power. Got the high diifs from the 230 front and rear cos box ratios for 722.6 it would hunt gears at 70mph so did calf's and the diffs I got geared it closer to standard so happy days but its not fitted yet. I felt the weight of the tyres anything above 80mph, 100 was pushing things. It was the covid days and the roads were empty. I love the w163 and working towards the overland drive in it. The ml500 will end up dragging with the rear Turbo mount. Enjoy your car Sir. 1luv P's. Got nag52 standalone 722.6 tcm and I hope I get DID1 diesel ecu. That will be the cherry on the my cake

@@bonespur2728 would have been that easy if there was not price gap between 4runner and ML something like 25-30k$ where I live
@@spidervadventures8107 You asked which was more capable, the 4runner is a much better offroader when modified. I'm not sure which generations of 4runner are available in your area, but where I am a 2002 3rd gen 4runner compared to a 2002 ml would be much more comparable price wise. Although the ML has many more luxury features. Both would be similar in a stock configuration. modified, the 4runner would win out. If you are looking for a good road trip vehicle and dirt road explorer, they would be about the same until you wanted a lift and bigger tires.
