  • Ammon and the sons of Mosiah go out on their missions to teach the Lamanites the gospel of Jesus Christ. Ammon ask to be King Lamoni’s servant. While watching the king’s sheep, Ammon has to defend the flock from thieves.
The servants who were with Ammon tell the king what happened. They tell him that Ammon has the strength of many men. The king thinks Ammon is the great spirit and asks to see him. Ammon tells the king that he is just a man. The king asks how a man can have such great power. Ammon teaches the king about the power of God.
The king wants to learn more and Ammon teaches him the plan of salvation and the gospel of Jesus Christ. The king believes everything Ammon says and prays to God for forgiveness of his sins. The king, his wife and his household know the goodness of their Redeemer and they are converted to God.

Ammon is one of my favorite prophets. Ammon’s approach is so Christ-like. He has every intention of serving King Lamoni for the rest of his life, and then calls upon God to help him save the King’s flocks. He knows that the way to convince others of truth is to love and serve them first. May we all learn from his example!

I so agree! He's so humble and faithful. When he started slinging stones at the intruders who wanted to take the flock, he reminded me of David and Goliath. He was vastly outnumbered and the odds were not in his favor, just like with David. And like David, he had no fear, just humble and complete faith in the Lord to fight his battle for him.

For some reason, this episode has opened my eyes even more to the truth of the Book of Mormon. It has been hard to hold back the tears, and they are harder to contain as I write this.
I am grateful for the truths that have been passed on through my family, down through generations, but I am more grateful that Father in heaven allowed me to be born to a Mother who had great faith, and passed these truths to her children. My oldest sister taught me most of what I know about the Church, but I witnessed the pure love of Jesus Christ as Mama helped others daily, sometimes against the wishes of my Father, who was not in the Church.
Having Asperger's and all the emotional problems that come with it, she showed unconditional love to me, having an understanding that something was irreparably wrong with me. Also, with that affliction, I have been a trained observer since childhood. I witnessed my own Mother perform miraculous works through her faith and prayer.
She never gave up on me, though I walked wide paths and fell into pits of sin. Here, toward the end of my life, all things that I was taught have come back to me. I still have hardship and doubts at times, but the things I was taught now come back to comfort me and remind me that I am His child, and that He will bring me back home when this life is over. I have finally received forgiveness for my sins, and my faith is strong, though I doubt that it could ever be as strong as my Mother's.

The cool thing about these videos is that we are able to learn the truths of the Book of Mormon in a different way. If we had trouble understanding something while reading or hearing it, sometimes seeing it demonstrated or acted out before us helps us understand it better. They've helped me, and I felt the Holy Ghost testify the truth of it to me as I watched this just now.
I've struggled with doubts too, and I was inactive for a little while. However, one thing I've learned is that we can either give up and give in, or we can push against those doubts and strengthen our spiritual muscles. Heavenly Father doesn't give up on us, just like your mother didn't give up on you. He loves you.

@@rosemarydodge6707 I agree with your view on understanding better when it is presented live. Many have brought more understanding, gave the characters faces, and brought many tears. But this one seemed to bring it all home to me, touched me more than previous videos, even though they brought on emotions and tears.
I am counted as inactive because I have a fear of crowds; and I still have WOW problems. I am working, once again, to lose these bad habits, but my mind is easily distracted from focus.
Because of my childhood and being bullied by neighbors and some fathers, I trust women more than I do men. Years ago, after regaining membership after being excommunicated, I was on fire for the Church. I was even 1st counselor in the Priesthood at one time. But I took on too many callings and I got overwhelmed.
I found a gas leak at the main in the table closet. I could feel it blowing on my face from the small hole next to the shutoff valve. I was building man and called maintenance and told them that when they called the gas company to let me know so I could be there to let them inside and show it to them. I told them that I thought it was a bad weld.
They called me the next day and said the gas company checked and found no leak. I melted down on the head of maintenance because i had told them to notify me and they hadn't gone inside to check.
The next Sunday, I talked to the 1st Counselor in the Stake Presidency that came to my Ward and happened to be the first person to welcome me back to Church, he had become a good friend. When he walked into the room, because he smelled it so strong, he yelled "Don't cut that light on!" as I flipped the switch. It was in the room where the young men met.
He called maintenance, and he must have excoriated them because the gas company came out and fixed... a bad weld. Maintenance then sent a man out to overwhelm me telling me ten different things I needed to learn, and telling me I might have to tend all the shrubbery and start cutting ALL the grass by myself. Our Ward wasn't much into volunteerism in those days and I knew I couldn't do it alone. I went straight to the Bishop (another dear friend) and told him what was happening. I told him I was no longer the building man , and I didn't know when I would even be back to Church. They had effectively used the PTSD I already had against me.
Sorry for writing a book, but I had to get that out. My Asperger's has controlled my life, but I am doing the best I can. Even leaders in the Church say that is acceptable. I am gaining more control, but masking is a very strenuous effort on my part.

Not only do Ammon’s choices in this story change the history of everything that happens to the Nephites and the Lamanites afterward, but it’s all about redemption, and the power of the Savior to change our hearts, our thoughts, and even our very nature; ro rescue us from misery and sin and pointlessness. Do you have a desire to believe in God? You need nothing more than a desire to begin, for the power of God is true.
Ask in faith in an experiment to know if this church, or any church is true. (Alma 32:27)
If ye lack wisdom, ask of God who giveth liberally (James 1:5)
If you do this, you will know with a surety that God and his doctrine is true. And if you believe me not, what have you lost in this experiment? Trust me in this, and experiment by asking of God, for if these things are not true, you have lost nothing and will have a collected mind.
I see however that you want to believe, because deep down inside you there is something that knows despite not knowing why, much like king Lamoni. Procrastinate the blessings from God no longer! We will welcome you with open arms!

There had been Nephite dissenters before, so they might be thinking, "here comes another". But only Ammon chose to become the king's servant. If others were offered to marry a princess, they would have gladly accepted. But Ammon was focused on his purpose. His love for his brethren the Lamanites is something that he couldn't contain. As the sons of Mosiah and their friends repented of their sins (according to what's written, "the vilest"), they did their best to undo the damage they had done to the Nephites who became less active because of their example in persecuting and disencouraging them in their faith. Next was to serve on missions to their brethren the Lamanites to testify, and to teach with long suffering.
From their examples we also see that we really shouldn't give up on wayward children. There will come a time when those who were taught about God and to do the right things when they were young, whatever wrong they had done, might make the 180-degree turn and become faithful and mighty servants to the Lord.

It's an interesting perspective that perhaps the king was (understandably) offended that Ammon would turn down Lamoni's offer to mary one of his own daughters (a Lamanite princess!), and furthermore that Ammon's assignment to care for the king's flocks may have actually been an act of spite. The king may very well have taken it as a great insult that a Nephite would have the boldness to refuse this (or any) offer from the king. I never read it this way before!

Uncle Jack was working at a bait store in Idaho, when a lumberjack asked, "Is there a place a man can take his wife and kids for quality time?" "You can come to church with us." The family lived in a small, small trailer, so the missionaries and family met infrequently at Jack’s house, who left his door unlocked.
One day, Uncle Jack came home to see the missionaries and family leaving. Jack asked the father, "What did they teach you?" "They taught us about the Holy Ghost." “When you get home tonight," Jack said, "I want you to kneel with your family, and I want you to pray out loud and ask God if these things are true, and if you do, He will witness the truth to you by the Holy Ghost."
The next morning, the wife came speeding up Jack's gravel driveway. "The strangest thing happened last night my husband suggested that we kneel and pray in a circle, holding hands, and I thought this was pretty silly, and I was reluctant to do this, but he insisted and as he prayed, a tremendous spirit came over us, so much so that the four of us passed out on our little trailer floor. The four of us lay in a deep sweet sleep... and we were unconscious in that sweet spirit, and then we awoke... and... hey, that's the same spirit I'm feeling now talking with you, Jack, and is this the Holy Ghost?”

Even so we should declare if any saw their redeemer if they are alike unto the redeemer and likely unto some can see the redeemer once in a life time , and not only what Christ has said: Blessed are they that have seen, and blessed are they that have not seen but believed.

I love how they mentioned Abish.
Abish was one of the servants of the queen who already had a testimony of of the gospel and was converted, however kept it a secret. No one in the king’s land was a believer, only her before the time Ammon came. When the king and queen were taught the gospel and converted to the Lord, she brought the people to witness the miracle. Perhaps, she wasn’t one of those who fell like the king and queen because (1) she was already converted and had a firm testimony in the Lord and (2) the Lord needed someone to message the people of what had happened.
    So now you know 😊

Here's one of the best demo about how to apply the principles taught at Preach My Gospel manual.
What a manner of missionary was this Ammon? As President Eyring has taught, we copy the model of our heroes.
I tried to copie Ammon's example, even that I could only figuratively cut off the arms that constantly stands up agains the missionary work.
"and he smote off as many of their arms as were lifted against him, and they were not a few."
I love this story, it's so intense and inspiring. Certainly these Videos are a Blessing to the World.

@Mike some people only understand violence, as that is how they were taught... Consider yourself, you choose to regularly use aggressive questions, that you think will work as "gotchas". When violence is the answer, it is useful, but as a last resort tool.
These people opposing Ammon lived by the maxim, if a hammer is your Only tool, Every problem looks like a nail.
Obviously Ammon had many more tools as his problem solving assets. Prayer, first used before even entering the land of Lamanites, Submission of his weapon, when confronted by a Lessor band of opposition than when tending the flocks. Choosing to serve, rather than immediately being embraced into the King's family, as Lamoni had offered, Organizing the others tending the flocks, to give Them confidence rather than simply solving the problem for them...Etc Etc
I could show more than 2 or 3 times the examples I have given, but milk precedes actual Solid foods.
Cynicism does not become you, so consider becoming more, as Ammon exemplified.
Love God, Love His children, Feed His sheep, do not attempt to confuse them.

What a beautiful video from one of my favorite parts of the Book of Mormon.
This really testifies about Jesus Christ.
Just look at how Ammon helped these people. I pray for those that have been taught about Jesus Christ whether in the church or outside the church. I pray for those who may have left due to many circumstances.
I know that God is watching over everyone and every one of our loved ones. Ammon’s story is an inspiration to me that God does inspire others to help those that need it whether they actively want it or not. Even when they don’t understand now, I know that Heavenly Father’s love is ever reaching and long suffering and never extinguishable.
He will provide a way, even when we cannot see it. I know He will. All we can do is to be like Ammon and serve those around us with Christ-like intentions. It is very true that as we strive to be an example and find opportunity in teaching those about Jesus Christ and His Restored Gospel, His Spirit will soften the hearts of those whom we serve. Ammon did it and so can we.

My paternal grandfather was from the central mountains. My mother told me this story that her grandfather told her: When it was harvest time they would sound off the conch shell from the mountain top. The heads of family would bring in the harvest that would be mounted in the mules very early in the morning. The men would ride the mules to the ships at San Juan ports to do the trading. Upon their return to the farm they would sound off the conch shell once more. Then the heads of family would come up to the mountain top to pick up the traded goods which were distributed evenly. When I heard about the bishop's store house I understood that this was the same principle my family has always live by. No one would go hungry or homeless at out farm.

He listened attentively, payed attention to his feelings and thoughts, opened his heart and mind to the truth, believed, prayed, and was converted to the Lord with his family. Along with Ammon's loving and service-oriented approach, the approach that King Lamoni demonstrates is also key to our conversion when we approach scripture study, sacrament meeting, classes at church, and listen to General Conference. Open your heart, truly listen, and most importantly, act in faith afterwards to be converted. If you don't fully believe, you won't be fully converted.

To me, the actor looks to be in his early 40's.
I looked in Mosiah 29 and saw that the sons of Mosiah, who were contemporaries with Alma the Younger, left on their mission around 92 BC. In Alma is "translated" around 73 BC while still young enough to be involved in the daily work of preaching the gospel (Alma 42:18). I think that early 40's is spot-on for the age of Ammon, but I could easily see a ten-year window on either side of that as possible.
