i got a ps4 but hardly play it, i'm still playing ps3 and my ps2 slim. trouble is everytime i go in on ps4 there's usually a game update to do, those recent call of duties were the worst as it could be like 90gb and you have to wait and your friends be sending invites but you can't play until update is done lol alot of players don't like the idea of in game charges, it's no wonder more are going back to the simpler times where you can just play and no fuss.

With PS5 you can jump into a game directly in some seconds into your last savegame (skipping most loading icons, depending on how well it is implemented)... loading times ingame are nearly instant in many cases. And also... not all new games are bad. There are many great games (indie or japanese titles as example) that are more game than the typical mainstream stuff. If you are bored or bothered, try some other game genres or game series you never tried before. Not the biggest mainstream stuff, maybe some niche games.
And most physical games are playable (as long you go with PS5 or Switch) without needing a day1 update (just install it from disc and play, on Switch instantly :P). Doesitplay shows what is playable without updates. On PS4 & 5 you can start the game even earlier, before the whole disc is isntalled.

Fetch quests. Collect 150 wood and 30 stone. Find this person for a special upgrade.... Yep. Its all been done a thousand times and a lot of open world stuff has done this to death and there is little innovation. Technology is such that they can build all these massive and detailed worlds, but fill them with mundane tasks and "time sinks". It just gets boring and time consuming and there is little in the way of a dopamine hit. There are exceptions of course but i do think modern games are built with a multiplayer focus in mind.

So much fun to be had. Like last week, just for the hell of it, I fired up Doom Eternal, opened up the console, and entered the 'noclip' console command. So I just flew around the map exploring 'out of bounds' areas that the player is not supposed to have access to or view up close. It was a lot of fun. Can't do that on console 😉

The digital vs physical discussion is one thing (and I'm very much pro physical), but this is one thing that the "early access" plague could actually solve. Release your faulty product. Let it debug itself in due course for one month. THEN print the discs, with the most necessary patches already on the disc. I wonder what will happen with all digital games in the future. All these server parks running worldwide 24/7 just to provide access to a 200 MB digital game from 1998? I doubt it. And before you know it, 2024 will be just as long ago as 98 is today. I've noticed I've kind of weaned off of triple AAA game releases due to the large data that usually comes with those games on top of microtransactions ect. I lasted up to 2016. I didn't see the point of the Xbox One. I loved my 360 and me and the lads still up to 2016 played Black Ops daily. Fast forward to this year, I got an Xbox Series S. Out of maybe 40 people I gamed with regularly online with, maybe 1-2 are occasionally online. Likewise, online games feel lonely. Nobody is really using microphones. There's no real sense of community on consoles unless you want to use Discord but that takes knowing where to go and hanging with people you already have a connection with. I ended up moving over to the Switch because the indie titles there piqued my interest and I feel a better sense of that childhood thrill with the console. Breath of the Wild really did bring back that positive feeling I had for gaming. Now that I got a a 9th gen? I'm just catching up with titles I missed out on from years ago and then I'll probably switch it off and my Game Pass. I think the next move will be back to PC gaming, my PS2, PS1, and Xbox 360.

Nowadays I pay 60/70 quid on a game (either on my xbox series x or ps5), throw the disc in to wait a hour for the main install and update to play an obviously unfinished game. Finding myself going back a lot and playing older games and having no complaints.

I'm 38 with two young kids. My time to play games is very limited. I don't play enough anymore to be competitive in multiplayer games. I don't have time to play single player games for 40+ hours for a single playthrough. Plus my play times are spaced too far apart for me to even remember what I need to do, what buttons I need to press, etc. I may not turn on my Xbox for weeks at a time -- most of the time the system, the game, and even the controller need to be updated.
Another thing is that most AAA don't feel different/unique anymore. I grew up cutting my teeth on the NES but I still look back at the first generation of 3D games on the PlayStation with great fondness. Every game, for better or worse, offers such a unique experience. A lot of games just feel tedious anymore -- a never-ending fetch quest that I've done 100 times before but now with a new coat a paint.
Edit: Look at the games behind you. Every one of those games feel unique compared to the one next to it. Faery Tale Adventures is legit one of my favorite games on Sega Genesis.

    • @rodgyretro
      @rodgyretro  Před 13 dny

Absolutely, finding the time, then finding the effort to put into a game once you have got past all the updates etc does dull out the highs you get from having a blast on a game.
I am totally with you on the retro games being they pinnacle of gaming times…
the trouble is we have been treated often to such great playability, awesome graphics that I yearn for that within a new game that pulls me in yet, as you say so many games are fetch quests or just feel so ‘been there done that before’
For now I will just take a step back and play some older titles until something releases that appeals…which are few and far between.

I've abandoned by far the most AAA modern games.
I will say that modern gaming is amazing if you look outside of the AAA stuff. There's so many fantastic indie games if you just look for them and many of them don't require powerful pc's. I remember when I first dipped my toes into these smaller games and lamenting the fact I was leaving behind high-fidelity graphics and crazy high production value and scale, but I think it was super worth it and has kept my passion for gaming alive.
Some of my favorite smaller games that bring back my love for gaming are:
    - Orcs Must Die 1-3 (defense shooter)
    - Deadlink (fast paced sci-fi shooter)
    - Dusk (Quake style shooter)
    - Mechabellum (round-based strategy)
    - Diplomacy Is Not An Option (Castle defense strategy)
    - Redout (Wipe-out inspired racing game)
    - Talos Principle 1 & 2 (puzzle games in the style of Portal)
None of these games have crazy updates that take any time to download and no micro transactions beyond a few cosmetics in Orcs Must Die and Mechabellum. All of them I think are easy to start playing and have fun with within minutes.
I think GTA 5 holds up really well, though I have not played the multiplayer.

The old era was definitely more of just load up a game to entertain yourself quickly for a bit before needing to do something else. The new era just wastes all your time. The games are massive and require constant troubleshooting or downloading, and it all takes away so much time. I mean, i'm used to it these days, but I can definitely understand the disaster modern gaming is. Hell, when i was using Xbox 360, i just pop in a disc and get going on it within minutes. No updates, no downloads, no extra strings attached. As a kid, I had an hour or two a day on the game. Those days saved so much time for me. It took a max of 5 minutes to get a game up and playing without being installed. Nowadays, it takes an hour or two of install, and then you get into the game. I downgraded my xbox recently to the One S. I don't do modern games much anymore. I have a PS5 which I will use for modern games when needed tho.

I've got a 4tb drive hooked into the Xbox and still space is an issue. It's just pushing the problem forward as you will still hit a point that you want to play something but still don't have the space.
It's the installs and updates that do my head in. I don't live in an area with the greatest internet and I think it was Forza horizon 3 took me a week to play after getting it on day one. It would download so slow that when I went to boot it the newer update was out and it started all over again with like 70gb files. I just wish the patches were short and snappy like they were on the 360 again.
I didn't have any troubles with dirt 4 difficulty wise, but I have found with some modern racers and just games in general a lot don't allow you the range of control to the difficulty they did a generation ago. For example I love the dirt rally games but they are tough, but the first one doesn't give you much choice in difficulty. It's just play it this way and If your having trouble get better. I dunno where I'm going with this now I've typed too much haha

I personally would just sell or give away the games that I don't feel like I wanna replay and just stick with the ones that I consider all time favorites, and genres that are more to my taste. Having much less choice makes it easier to decide what to play. When I was a kid, that's how it was. I probably had no more than 30-40 games in total, throughout my whole childhood and teenage years, so I really took my sweet time with them.

I didn't have the money so I stayed with my GameCube, Wii, Xbox 360, etc from 2014 until 2018 when I finally got my first Xbox One and re-entered modern gaming. I felt like I teleported to a different world I tells you. Microtransactions were normalized, Free-to-play games were taking over, physical media was dying, and worst of all, gamers were divided. So much from them to now that has made me not just hate modern gaming but modern gamers.
Everyone is either a sell out for big corporations or charged by politics to divide gamer culture and make us look bad. Gaming companies no longer putting gamers first. Social Media has overexposed us and now we hate everything. I just can't take it anymore. I'm tired of being hated for anything I say now. When this 9th console generation era ends, I am staying behind for good. It's clear this is the way gaming culture is going and will not go back anytime soon. Gaming isn't for me and no, it's not because I'm older like many will cry about, gaming isn't for gamers anymore. It's for politics. I want no more with this. Let modern gamers get scammed, be politically-charged, be divided, I will happily stay behind and have a set gaming collection and enjoy all my freedom.

Many great points there for sure, yeah I get where you’re coming from, Xbox one gen onwards has just been so backwards.
It seems the big companies are oblivious to the way they are shaping gaming and collecting and not sure they would care if they did see it all!
      Thanks for watching 😉👍

i don’t know if you like rpg/survival games, but might i suggest medieval dynasty. i was like you a couple of weeks ago, lost my passion for gaming. it felt like a chore or an obligation when i would try to play something. mind you, i have a library of over 300 games i’ve accumulated through sales and other sorts… and still, i don’t want to play ANY of them. that was until i tried medieval dynasty, now i’m addicted (for better or worse lol) but it’s a chill game with plenty of progression and content in it that you can play at your own leisure. just a suggestion :)

I'm getting a steam deck oled in october, going to play games like, inside and little nightmares. Got hooked on streets of rage as a kid and than moved to shooter games but have lost interest. So I remembered the game that realy got me was, an old one called. Another world, so going back to that genre on the freedom of the steam deck, nearly; the lenovo legoin go. But have decided on steam deck oled.

I agree mate the frustration of modern Xbox/PS5 is a nightmare but what I would say is the switch is amazing for not holding you up so I normally play games on that
And if that fails I would go back to that awesome collection behind you
    Great video mate 👍

Great advice buddy, I have dabbled with the switch in the past but, as a family it didn’t really get used…maybe it is time to try it again!
I will always dip in and out of playing retro, especially the SEGA…it’s in the blood!
      Cheers for watching 😉

@rodgyretrogamer3334 thanks brother!.. By the way, I agree with pretty much everything you said in this video. I enjoy playing video games a lot. But lately, my video consoles that I play the most are gen 6 and 7, Sega Dreamcast, PS2, OG Xbox, PS3, and Xbox 360.
      Cheers from South Florida 🤘🎮🕹🍻

Great video, had the same thoughts myself recently. It's strange how my PS2 almost feels more modern in just how quickly I can play whatever I'm feeling. I don't have to delete space or connect an ethernet cable to download games faster. The modern console experience can annoy you out of actually playing games.
