Lyrics:
I finally broke into the prison
I found my place in the chain
Even damnation is poisoned with rainbows
All the brave young men
They're waiting now to see a signal
Which some killer will be lighting for pay
Into this furnace I ask you now to venture
You whom I cannot betray
I fought in the old revolution
On the side of the ghost and the king
Of course I was very young
And I thought that we were winning
I can't pretend I still feel very much like singing
As they carry the bodies away
Into this furnace I ask you now to venture
You whom I cannot betray
Lately you've started to stutter
As though you had nothing to say
To all of my architects let me be traitor
Now let me say I myself gave the order
To sleep and to search and to destroy
Into this furnace I ask you now to venture
You whom I cannot betray
Yes, you who are broken by power
You who are absent all day
You who are kings for the sake of your children's story
The hand of your beggar is burdened down with money
The hand of your lover is clay
Into this furnace I ask you now to venture
You whom I cannot betray
Every Leonard Cohen album from “Songs of” to “Recent Songs” is a compelling masterpiece.
"Even damnation is poisoned with rainbows."
To me the most beautiful line ever written.
This takes me back so many, many years. Cohen and Dylan saw me through some real desperate times. But, hey ho, here I am still listening to this at 77. Bless
I hope you don’t understand it if that’s true, because it’s a very dark line. Into this furnace the devil asks us to venture, lying that he can’t betray us.
'You whom that I can not betray'
One of the best songs ever. I cried a lot
You Have Wrote The Most Beautiful Songs Ever Leonard And You Will Always Be Loved .
Those who have seen war.... will take those days to the grave !
I believe that! Soldiers and civilians. I’ve been reading “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Victor Frankl. He was a Holocaust survivor and psychotherapist who owed his survival in part to being able to listen and respond to one of his prison guard’s marital concerns. In the song Cohen talks about asking others to walk willingly into a furnace. I feel mystified by his lyrics all the way up to at least the 1990’s. I’d like to hear how you interpret this song. All I know is that I find it touchingly honest, humble, and beautiful. Maybe that’s all there is to it for me.
Into this furnace I ask you now to venture.
The devil luring the dead to hell.
WONDERFUL MUSIC!! Thank you!! 👉❤👈🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🌼🌼
Wow! This song is deep. Heavy. ❤⚘
Same Old Thing 👍👍👍👍👍
It's the only song he said had no meaning
One of the best LC songs....too bad there's not live versions available afaik...along with the bunch of heroes... what a shame!
Sublime
All of Cohen's early songs
All of Leonard Cohens early songs remind me of a film noir version of a western.
Sort of western Lars Van Tried might produce.
Now thats an interesting vibe
From where did Leonard get his melodies? They're so delicate.
That's the word I've been looking for! Thanks!⚘
Moon Dancer It was the only word I found fitting!
@@hatsuseno Sweet!
Delicate....Lovely❤
They found him
RIP Molly Brodak
Cool 😎😎😎
❤
nice
Siempre hay bulos sobre todo el mundo, me extrañó uno que había con Janis Joplin en un concierto , no veo que eso lo haya que contar ,aunque ya es moral.
Please correct:"To sleep and to search and to destroy" Should be "to sweep"
It is arguable I think. Both versions make sense. I am just working on an Essay involving this song. So I am listening to it over and over again. I come to the conclusion, that "sleep" is even more poetic and opening up more meaning. The same way the whole song is working with ambigue semantic phrases. Sadly I don't have the LP with original Lyrics inside. Do you?
I cannot decline I here the phonetic "L" at 03:04 ...
@@hihatiser I agree, it does sound like sleep.
I want Songs from a Room. It's the only album of Cohen's that I don't have. Who knows where I can get it?
Just ask Google where you can buy it. Then Google will connect you to Amazon RIGHT ON THE CD!
@@moondancer3157 Or the vinyl can be bought via ebay, amazon, wherever.
Try a record store.
I have "Songs From a Room" on vinyl. Even though I couldn't play it on a record player now if I had one (so worn out from being played, and the record player, well, I lost that during the most devastating break-up of my lifetime) you can't put a price on some things. I saw Leonard Cohen live some years ago too. As depraved as I am, at this moment I feel lucky to have those memories.
Danke, habe Link gesetzt
