- After an emergency trip to the island of Puerto Rico to bury my husband's grandmother who tragically passed away, we found Guanica to be a ghost town. My hometown was emptied of life. I thought I was just seeing things. So two and a half months later we returned to Guanica to find out why. What we learned left us speechless.

I was born in Guanica at "el barrio Chino" and have always visited my home town. This video has got me tears out of my eyes. Please say hi to Nito, my good old friend.

What a load of shit these politicians feed you. Guanica died the day the sugarcane factory closed down. The working class moved away or died a slow death. Their children left to find their fortune most settling in the USA for a prosperous life. Unemployment, lack of jobs, unlivable wages, crime, drugs and mainly government corruption. I was raised in Ensenada until 1983 and make it a point to go back every year. To my surprise the neighborhoods have also died with the older generation. The generation thatlived the golden years of Guanica.

Me da mucha nostalgia ver a Guanica casi desolada ❤. Cuando pasó el terremoto en ese momemto, yo vivia en un Condominio en San Juan y fue horrible. Luego de varias semanas después, recuerdo que mi esposo y yo para esa entonces novios, fuimos a Yauco, Guanica y los pueblos cercanos de ahi y la montaña para llevar ayuda de comida, oración por los afectados y soporte emocional. Todos estaban durmiendo afuera de sus casas por semanas y hasta algunos pasaron mas tiempo. Fue tan triste ver a mis terruños en esa situación. Hasta que luego de meses comenzaron a irse de Guanica proceso que no fue facil para muchos despegarse de lo que por años conocían y lo que pocos tenían. Ver sus casas destruídas o en proceso, estar afuera y no poder dormir en sus dormitorios más, fue doloroso para mi ver eso 😢 no fue nada fácil. Ellos no podian dormir por semanas y asi meses ya que la tierra siguió por meses con pequeños temblores y ya ni descansar muchos podían. Yo me hospede por espacio de casi tres semanas en un pequeño hotelito porque no podía volver al condominio por la horrible sensación que vivi de el edificio se mecía. Ay, feo.
Ahora sigo viendo videos recientes donde comenzó la fisura en Guánica del terremoto, ha seguido abriendose cada vez más y más.
Es super extraño el por qué esa área sigue temblando. Muy extraño.
Ya en esas casas de toda esa area nadie puede vivir más porque el terremo sigue cediendo o tiembla. Otra pregunta para hacerse.

I was born and raised in NYC, but lived some years in Sabana Grande and went to Guanica quite frequently in early to mid 80's to flirt with the local girls. 🙂
So sad to see how such a vibrant town has reached this point, but exposure like this will eventually lead to a revitalization of this great southern town.

I am from Sabana Grande and I went back home and got to see how different the island looks. I went to Guanica and my own town in Sabana Grande and my heart broke. It’s not the same as I remember when I was a little girl. The government abandoned his people.
You're right. The impactful changes are what inspired this film.

Hola saludos desde Roanoke Virginia , yo me crie en Guanica, extraño mucho, cuando veo vídeos muchas veces no presentan , los nombres de las calles , kilómetros, siempre presentan partes superficiales, no presentan las escuelas frente a la plaza & las calles , casas , los colmados que existen oh dejaron de existir , todavía creo existe La Tienda Lirio , lo que era el antiguo Cine de madera etc,, & yo pensé que iba a ver este formato en este video , Pero si me gustaría que , aceptaras con gusto mis sugerencias, gracias
Dajeme ver loque puedo hacer para más palante en el futuro. Guanica tiene mucha historia.
