The game is complete 🔥. Played in a bunch of prerelease events and have been obsessively deck building and playing with my son. We still haven’t tried 3/4 of the leaders but the game is producing some epic moments for us.
The game is fantastic. I've been a core mtg player and tournament grinder for the better part of 12 years. This is also the first tcg that has gotten me excited to play something other than mtg in many years. I love how fast the matches are. I also how the gameplay flows with each player taking actions right after each other in a shared turn. All my friends love it, and I'm building a scene at my LGS for it. The game has legs, I hope you guys will support it in the future! Thanks also for another great vid!!
For your question at 4:12:53 I think the agency question becomes more clear after you play a bit. After my first 5-10 games I started to look back and see how grabbing the Initiative or trading for Units at certain times (or knowing when to be pushing damage vs playing more control) made a huge difference and resulted in a win or loss down the road. Sometimes those decisions, even early on in a match, have a drastic impact later on in the game. On the surface some of it appears so 'simple' but there is actually a ton of strategic depth to the game when you dive into it.
As soon as you guys can get logistics figured out, I would love to get a case of SWU on the subscription model with you guys. Time to beat down the door of FFG and tell them to get their act together!
100%. I know TC has already stated they won't for business reasons, which makes total sense. But come on FFG, just give in and get all these guaranteed sales through TC!!
After getting out of competitive gaming entirely in 2018 for many of the reasons Zach mentioned, I am all in on SWU. It is so damned good, and the support behind it seems to be lightyears beyond Destiny.

I'm glad the game is good and people are loving it. I wish it had more of the look of the Star Wars LCG though. That game really nailed the look and feel of Star Wars. Unlimited looks more comic book-y.
I'm more excited in playing sealed than constructed. Have been that way in all the games I've played. You never know what's going to happen. So much fun. I can't wait to play it this weekend! Great video guys as always!
This game has great, balanced, limited formats (both draft and sealed are a blast to play). Plus it's a great time opening boosters since you can get the big hits in any pack instead of some different 'collector' pack or something. Hope they maintain this going forward!
I think SW Unlimted has been fantastic. I went to a pre release last week and played with my buddy and my son this weekend. It is easy enough for my 11 year old to play but complicated enough for a dad like me. Plus the chase card will keep the collector and SW fan in me buying.
The reason for the playmat and sleeves thing is not to sell merch. It's to make it easy for judges to say no when you show up with your half naked Leia playmat..
Yeah, MtG has been trying to deal with this (to varying degrees) for years, like when they pulled the Indy GP 2012 mat and the Chandra/Liliana-thing. They're trying to get out in front of it and make it clear that they want a family-friendly atmosphere at official events.
Much praise to Covenant for all the work they've put in with the studio and production quality. I just have to say that I find the flurry of comments flying up and down the screen to be very distracting. Personally I would much prefer that to be reigned in. Such as to only show comments that Zach or Steven are directly replying to. Otherwise, I can read the side chat bar if I want chat. Thanks, Love you guys!
I've played in a couple sealed events for SWU over the past week. Both events were a blast and it was great to just hang out with Star Wars fans. I'm not sure how much constructed events I will attend but I'm hyped to play as much sealed as I can.
Yeah, the limited formats (both sealed and draft) for this game are well balanced and super-fun. Plus, it feels nice to crack the packs since you can get the big hits in them (as opposed to them being siphoned off to some other 'collector' pack or something).
Star Wars Unlimited has planned 9 sets, and is releasing 3 sets per year. The amount of success we've seen for the first set means we'll likely hit that three year / 9 set plan ... but there is a finite limit on how much Star Wars there is out there to release. I imagine that they'll try to push beyond that three years ... but that 3 to 5 years is a good projection.
For those saying that the game is "solved" already... How many CCGs have been released with 3 tourney-level competitive decktypes on opening day? It seems like most games I've seen (like Lorcana as a recent example) have 1 or maybe 2 "meta" decks at the start.
I may be missing something but I thought when one player attacks the other defends back with just the power amount (not the ability unless it is a when attacked one) immediately. Only the attacker is exhausted. Also when a card is played, yes it is exhausted as to attack but not as to ability.
I looked into going to a ghost galaxy Keyforge vault tour. I was turned off of it quite hard by the way they chose to structure it. Under FFG, the various sealed formats they tried were equal to archon, or even treated as the primary format, which was very smart as that is the core appeal of Keyforge. It's maybe the best sealed experience you can have. The ghost galaxy vault tours relegated sealed to a "casual warmup tournament" with no real prize support. The main events were their constructed-esque archon tournaments where you can combine decks to make the one you play with. It felt a little greedy since that forces people to open loads of decks and hunt for the stuff they want, plus it sidelines literally the best format. I stopped paying attention after that.
Col Wulf Yularen has been a favorite character since the old Decipher star wars game gave him a name and backstory. He was in the first decipher core set, and I'm happy he made it in this new games core set.
4:10:16 "Counterspell is the card you played the turn before..." Totally agree. I've hated Counterspells since I started playing Magic. The exception to this is when that's the main interaction of the game, like WWE Raw Deal. That game is all Counterspell. But that's what makes it better than it just being a thing like in Magic. Eternal (the digital card game designed by MtG pros makes this a lot better while being in the Magic based game system, try that game if you enjoy Magic at all). This feels like it's a fantastic system with lots of expansion to it. I expect "Instants" to maybe be a thing, but hopefully it's in very limited quantity. Like a keyword, and treat it in this game like you treat Free Stuff and Discard Recursion. A dangerous thing that can be used effectively if playtested throughly.
The married couple energy in this video is massive lol! Y’all have been friends and playing games together for too long! 😁 Love the banter and I find myself literately laughing out loud at times. Unlimited looks pretty slick and I’ll have to reign in the self-control to not dive into this one.
On the Hyperspace treatment topic - imo most of the cards look way better as Hyperspace, but then there are _some_ that just feel way better to me with the regular border. Like "No Good to me Dead" - Hyperspace is very bright while the regular, dark border makes the whole card feel more gloomy and... well dark. Cool :)
freakin LOVE Magi-Nation, such an amazing, fun game. I still play with a a few times a year with the same group of friends from the early 2000s. I almost jumped out of my seat at work when I got the email from Earthborne about MJ, just such awesome news!!! hate the "meta". just build a fun deck and play!! be surprised how often a random deck does well. the playmat and sleeve ruling exists in a lot of TCGs. its to allow the judges to remove inappropriate or unlicensed art. It will be interesting to see how heavily enforced if the art isn't inappropriate. "I will continue playing respurces. I got some big boys in here." -Zach. Of course you do!! are you even playing a TCG if Zach's Beefy Boys arent included? 🤣 I LOVE like 90% of the art for SWU. and the ones I dont like, for the most part, arent THAT bad. Loved seeing this on stream. Unfortunately, only caught like 5min live while I was at work, but the watchback is always nice to have. Team Covenant + FFG Star Wars card game... ya, make sense. I love the comic book style artwork. SW is great as comic book so I think this artwork suits the game! Although it would be coom with theme set that use photos from the movies aswell :)
i mean, sometimes the meta does get solved - but it gets solved by professional teams of players being paid to analyze and play the game the days 1 'solves' of the meta are always just redditors dunning kreugering themselves into the false belief that an okay deck they have put together is completely unbeatable. reddit constantly promotes that kind of conversation, for better or worse, and the belief is always miles away from the the reality
nxt time the mini cam of john should be in the upper middle of the screen between those guys and it should be on screen all the time except when they play
As a old time Star Wars fan from decipher days, that one being my 2nd ever collectible card game, I'm definitely passing on SWU. FAB is amazing,v with its complexity, which this just doesn't seem to grab but then FAB is so hard to find people to play with outside of the armory events that charge money and so it's super expensive to play on a budget in CC. I'm more drawn towards the cooperative lcg models at the moment, Earthborne from watching y'all play seems cool but none have kept my attention more than the classic you got me into, Arkham Horror Lcg. You really nailed it for me, when you mentioned the slower release schedule of Sorcery and FFG in Arkham with the 1 big campaign and investigator release each year or 18 months something in Sorcery. Really loving that since Edge of the Earth. Still hoping to see y'all return for some more Arkham streams of the Scarlet Keys and the newest Feast of Hemlock Vale campaigns yet. Also, how is it possible that people have been watching TC content and not hitting the"like" button. Man, the ship's been cruising on autopilot for many a year now. i have a good houserule i think : if there is f.ex green symbol and u cant pay for it pay normally 2 if there is green and blue , pay 1 for the one u don't have if there is black and red and u have none pay 3 if there are two yellow or two whites and u have none pay 4. so u are more punished when u have a single symbol u cant pay and even more if u have multiple of the same color that u cant pay
I thought it was awesome seeing Luke at the end of the Mandalorian season. Season 1 was boring, but I watched it because it was popular. I didn't like Rogue One or Andor. Andor just feels so bleak and depressing. Why would I want to watch that? My favorite modern Star Wars has been Ahsoka. I loved the deep dive into history and lore, Jedi "magic" stuff, a whole other universe… So cool.
This is my first video watch since the new schedule change of content release. I think the last video I saw with you both was the PVE of Ashes. Good to see you guys back at the table. I played the pre-release of this game. I really enjoyed it. 2 wins, 2 loses. Won two packs and got an extra pack for participating. My kit i opened I got Darth Vader's Star Destroyer the Devastator (Legendary rare) it was a fun event. I like the simplicity and the back and forth exchange between the players. I am more interested in playing the Twin Suns variant of the game having two commanders providing an additional recourse outside of your normal pool.

One guy said he uses the worst decks to try to win. At this point you're banking on your opponent to suck. Otherwise, there's no way you can win with crappier decks. It's just not possible.
Zach if your draw to Destiny was the dice mechanics, well that was why I loved and still love Ashes Rise of the Pheonixborn it already filled that passion for me and why I never got into Destiny.
I just do not understand why 'Star Wars: The Deck Building Game' came out when they knew they were doing Unlimited?! So strange to take a chunk out of your player base. And the Altered stuff... even stranger!
On the topic of "Why aren't all cards just Hyperspace" I wonder if there is an opportunity later for an alternate product that is all Hyperspace. Something like the recent Rarity collections in Yugioh or a preconstructed twin-suns product in the style of Commander Precons.
Hyperspace cards give people a reason to buy product even if they have all the cards they want because they won’t have them in Hyperspace. It’s a really fair rarity system that improves sales without being predatory.
Especially one sets go out of print and or rotation. Would be awesome to see a "here's the year one commons and Uncommons reprinted in Hyperspace for you to flush out a collection now that they are no longer tournament legal"
I really hope not. I love SWU's current release model where the rarest variants of the rarest cards can be pulled all from the same booster type (ie. no different "Collector", "Set" or "Draft" product lines). The day they try and implement something akin to MtG's product lines I'd seriously consider bailing on this game...
The playmat thing is absolutely insane, it's true. Although I will say at the pre-release I went to, nobody cared. I think it's pretty clear nobody will actually enforce or pay attention to it. At the big tournaments everyone should turn up with Destiny mats and see what happens - disqualify everyone?
Is there somewhere that these guys have put together all their thoughts on Star Wars fatigue and the sequel trilogy in one place? I'm a big fan of John C. Wright's "The Last Straw: A Critical Autopsy of a Galaxy Far, Far Away"
I will never understand the choice to actively make your game less beautiful (borders vs. hyperspace) in the service of "collectability". I would much rather have an entire product that looked like the hyperspace cards, and didn't put overly colorful and nonsensical borders around the already polarizing art, than having a handful of "cool" cards sprinkled throughout the box.
"Primetime Luke" doesn't exist in Disney canon. "Primetime Luke" force-projected himself to disguise his niece as himself to scare the S___ out of his nephew, among other things (that was the first thing that came to mind). But I do understand where you are coming from, Zach.
I tried this recently and it just felt like it was lacking that Star Wars flavor I always get from an earlier Star Wars game. What was it? Oh yeah, the original, unbeatable Star Wars CCG from Decipher. Now that's a Star Wars card game!
The Richard Garfield SW CCG is the only one for me still. I was super bummed to see that this new iteration went with the art style it chose instead of live action movie clips!
The old decipher ccg is ten million times better than this game, the cards look like they’re made for 6 year olds. The decipher game had amazing card design, even the borders and card frames matched the movies, perfectly. Another wasnt opportunity to make a good Star Wars card game. It literally hasn’t been done since 1995.
To be honest I have no interest in this one bit. There’s nothing really new here in game mechanics. It seems to me they’ve just taken ideas from their other LCG’s and just slapped a Star Wars IP on it. A cash grab maybe? And what was the point of the Star Wars deck building game just to then release this? Another cash grab. Yeah at this stage I’m not buying. I’d go out and buy MTG Fallout before I went anywhere near this.
somr of those leader cards are kinda useless, im think of just playing them for their symbols or only play and use them into battle upright, ...😒🥱🤔 i mean its good that they are not too powerful to not focus too much on them but thematically it makes little sense, sure vader cant take on a battleship alone but still he is powerful enough to wipe out many units single handed, same w obi wan and luke

Such a great game and totally has reformed the destiny playerbase in my local scene.

I enjoyed the game. It surprised me. This first set def feels like a racing game and reminds me of a back and forth wow tcg.

from gameplay point, this is one of the best TCGs I have played in the past 20 years

the non leader Vader is 100% S tier. It is bananas. Getting to drop up to 3 guys free depending on their cost.

My kit i opened I got Darth Vader's Star Destroyer the Devastator (Legendary rare) it was a fun event. I like the simplicity and the back and forth exchange between the players.
I am more interested in playing the Twin Suns variant of the game having two commanders providing an additional recourse outside of your normal pool.

One guy said he uses the worst decks to try to win. At this point you're banking on your opponent to suck. Otherwise, there's no way you can win with crappier decks. It's just not possible.

Zach if your draw to Destiny was the dice mechanics, well that was why I loved and still love Ashes Rise of the Pheonixborn it already filled that passion for me and why I never got into Destiny.
I just do not understand why 'Star Wars: The Deck Building Game' came out when they knew they were doing Unlimited?! So strange to take a chunk out of your player base. And the Altered stuff... even stranger!
What's the rules on looking at your faced down resources? I remember when I played Lorcana, you can't.
On the topic of "Why aren't all cards just Hyperspace" I wonder if there is an opportunity later for an alternate product that is all Hyperspace. Something like the recent Rarity collections in Yugioh or a preconstructed twin-suns product in the style of Commander Precons.
Hyperspace cards give people a reason to buy product even if they have all the cards they want because they won’t have them in Hyperspace. It’s a really fair rarity system that improves sales without being predatory.
Especially one sets go out of print and or rotation. Would be awesome to see a "here's the year one commons and Uncommons reprinted in Hyperspace for you to flush out a collection now that they are no longer tournament legal"

I love SWU's current release model where the rarest variants of the rarest cards can be pulled all from the same booster type (ie. no different "Collector", "Set" or "Draft" product lines). The day they try and implement something akin to MtG's product lines I'd seriously consider bailing on this game...

The playmat thing is absolutely insane, it's true. Although I will say at the pre-release I went to, nobody cared. I think it's pretty clear nobody will actually enforce or pay attention to it. At the big tournaments everyone should turn up with Destiny mats and see what happens - disqualify everyone?

Is there somewhere that these guys have put together all their thoughts on Star Wars fatigue and the sequel trilogy in one place? I'm a big fan of John C. Wright's "The Last Straw: A Critical Autopsy of a Galaxy Far, Far Away"
I will never understand the choice to actively make your game less beautiful (borders vs. hyperspace) in the service of "collectability". I would much rather have an entire product that looked like the hyperspace cards, and didn't put overly colorful and nonsensical borders around the already polarizing art, than having a handful of "cool" cards sprinkled throughout the box.
"Primetime Luke" doesn't exist in Disney canon. "Primetime Luke" force-projected himself to disguise his niece as himself to scare the S___ out of his nephew, among other things (that was the first thing that came to mind). But I do understand where you are coming from, Zach.

Idk, I lost the trust in FFG and their way of making cards games, hyping them up then abandoning them after few months.
The Richard Garfield SW CCG is the only one for me still. I was super bummed to see that this new iteration went with the art style it chose instead of live action movie clips!

The old decipher ccg is ten million times better than this game, the cards look like they’re made for 6 year olds. The decipher game had amazing card design, even the borders and card frames matched the movies, perfectly.
Another wasnt opportunity to make a good Star Wars card game. It literally hasn’t been done since 1995.

To be honest I have no interest in this one bit. There’s nothing really new here in game mechanics.
It seems to me they’ve just taken ideas from their other LCG’s and just slapped a Star Wars IP on it.

somr of those leader cards are kinda useless, im think of just playing them for their symbols or only play and use them into battle upright, ...😒🥱🤔
i mean its good that they are not too powerful to not focus too much on them but thematically it makes little sense, sure vader cant take on a battleship alone but still he is powerful enough to wipe out many units single handed, same w obi wan and luke
