  • We marvel at the wonders of evolution and at its simplicity, but evolution is also messy, inefficient, and brutal. MIT Professor Manolis Kellis argues that humanity can do better, and has already switched from ‘vertical’ to ‘horizontal’ evolution, with the spreading of ideas, wealth, and diversity across the globe, leading to exponential technological advances. He presents a vision for transforming medicine and reverse human disease, by understanding the wiring of the human genome, revealing the causal hallmarks of different disorders, and therapeutically targeting their unique combinations in each patient. Lastly, he makes a call to action across genomics, artificial intelligence, biology, chemistry, biotech, pharma, finance, hospitals, and patients, to join forces, put an end to the brutality of evolution, and allow human diversity to flourish. Manolis Kellis is a professor of computer science at MIT, a member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, a principal investigator of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT, and head of the MIT Computational Biology Group (compbio.mit.edu). His research spans disease circuitry, genetics, genomics, epigenomics, regulatory genomics, and comparative genomics, applied to Alzheimer's Disease, Obesity, Schizophrenia, Cardiac Disorders, Cancerand , Immune Disorders. He has led several large-scale genomics projects, authored over 250 journal publications cited more than 125,000 times, and led more than 20 multi-year grants from the NIH. He received the US Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering by US President Barack Obama, the Mendel Medal, and the NIH Director’s Transformative Research Award. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Don't fall for the hype. He's promising everything. Yet his team's website shows he's achieved nothing he claimed here. He seems to love getting grants and doctoral students -- ohhh, for the love of fame!

Ending vertical evolution will not stop suffering, as "idea pathogens" spread horizontally, possess people who in turn bring about unnecessary suffering, misery and death, even while claiming good intentions.
