    I would really recommed that you react to some borazity magazine videos, she does a lot of informative video essays about bts. If you would ever want to react to that type of content I really recommend her videos like "bts vs boybands coming back", "bts and k-pop without the k" and "why (most) armys don't like kpop". I think you would find her content really enjoyable since she is very well spoken with interesting content!

    (sorry for my english) I'm a veteran fan and i watched the show where jk was mistreated and it was really bad, not just the part of the hamburgers. The whole mood of the MC was rude. There was a part in the show where there was an online voting and all ARMY of course voted JK and others were almost pissed off to the point Jungkookwas visibly unconfortble and did a sign into the camera to ask Army to stop voting for him. to go this far probably he received a bad treatment even when the cameras were turned off. It was so bad and it was the first show JK partecipated alone and from that show bts never went alone in any show until recently and they did few shows because they were always treated like that. That's why now that they did solo promos they say that they're nervous when appearing alone, they had really bad experience in korean shows, of course now they're famouse and everyone treat them well, but it's so sad that it was the fame that make people respect them, and not the fact that they were young and kind souls from the beginning

      I agree I am also a veteran army and watched it live along with voted... and we could all agree although you might not speak the same language you can tell how uncomfortable they made him feel which was felt through the screen and jungkook's body behavior and just the overall not accepting his burger and making him seem like a outcast was so hurtful to watch as a fan/army back then majority of us were armys who tuned in to support him on his solo activity (giving him so much love that it was sad to see be a burden cause this gave more motive for the cast to dislike JK popularity which is insane cause if that were to happen now it literally doesn't make sense and would never slide ) and just to witness such disrespect not just to him but we as armys felt it personal. Man JK and the rest of the members might have forgiven and even jimin and yoongi ate with that host/entertainer but I would never forget nor forgive to be honest since I witnessed it and just know that they treat them better cause of their global popularity that they can't ignore anymore. Perhaps he apologized to them personally, but that why BTS are just great humans and they have a heart of gold.

      Oh WOW! Just the part shown here has always made me mad and sad (and I’m only a fan for less than 2 years). It’s really upsetting to hear that it was much worse and went on throughout the show. I thought Korea was all about respect and from all I have seen since becoming a fan, hearing about the teen suic*de rate, and watching the MHJ thing I feel much different.

    51:03 The SK defence minister actually wanted them to serve AND keep doing their group activities. They know how much influence BTS has on the economy and they were more than ready to exploit the boys and work them to the bone, while framing it as this ''amazing, generous opportunity''🥴

    • @ablindinglightthatnolonger8379
      @ablindinglightthatnolonger8379 Před 19 dny +4

      If I remember correctly they framed it as basically a less austere form of service where they could have had "longer breaks and special permits" for national promotional events and like big foreign events for musicians. But I think it was also implied that BTS couldn't see a dime from all the proceeds that would be ultimately gained by the gov, since it's forbidden to actively do other work during military service (they would have been volunteers basically), and I think their work would had have to pass through institutional scrutiny (basically censorship).
      As if:
      1.the members would be naive enough to not see the clear exploitation for financial and clout reasons, especially in the face of the upcoming Expo gold rush to earn votes, which Busan was a candidate for.
      2.BTS would ever fall for such weird rage-inducing tactics that would piss off SK citizens due to the leniency of their mandate, even though they would still complete their duty, basically picking the double-edged-sword 😂
      3.they would ever be satisfied to perform without proper preparation and having the time to work on their music and craft, since BTS are nothing shorter than professionals.

    and not only fans, members have alluded to some seniors not being very nice to them when they were still rookies, and that's why it’s even more heartwarming to see how much juniors now love bts and how good bts members are at being seniors, like yoongi wrote a whole song for juniors, snooze

    15:12 This is such a good metaphor for it, and what's funny is that when BTS enlisted last year, there were a lot of "relieved" statements from other fandoms saying "Finally! Other groups can shine now that BTS is gone" -- AND YET! Jin is back in a few days and NO GROUP or ARTIST has managed to "shine" in the spotlight that was left free for them. It's either BTS has held their record, or the members have taken them with their solo releases 😆 And the biggest reason for that is the fact that even with BTS serving in the military, all these other fandoms can talk about is STILL them, to the point that they forget to support their actual favorites 😭

    The only way athletes and musicians (which are the only two able-bodied groups that can obtain exemption) can get exempt is for them to win a prestigious award. Soccer players get exempt often bc they bring “National prestige to the country.” Classical musicians get exempt when they win international titles (giving the impression that BTS would’ve gained exemption had they won a Grammy). Heck, even Faker, the best league of legends players who happens to be Korean was recently granted exemption bc of an award he won.

    BTS always takes notes during their album release press conferences. It’s similar to what Wesley is saying: they don’t want to misconstrue what the reporters are asking/forget parts of their questions and also want to clarify their responses before giving them

  • @Ahjusshi_Brown
    @Ahjusshi_Brown Před 20 dny +29

    Just to clarify the underground hip hop interview. It wasn’t the host/interviewer who insulted BTS. In fact, it was the host who broached the discussion abt ppl already accusing BTS of not being hiphop bc they were idols and wearing makeup. It was another guest/underground rapper (B Free, he’s a bum and in jail) who interjected to call them girls. Also should note, there was only 1 host. The rest of the ppl at the table were other guests/rappers
    As an African American, in general, I understand the “tough guy” aesthetic associated with hip hop (and in an extended clip of that interview, the host also discusses this dichotomy btw the image of hiphop and the image of idols) but if a hip hop artist today steps on stage, does an interview, or is in a photo shoot…they’re wearing makeup. It’s just a necessity for the business. So it really shows how outdated those ideals were at the time of this interview

    This video truly only scratches the surface of how cataclysmic that Japan v Korea/Jimin’s shirt controversy. Like Ik western history doesn’t teach it but Japan’s rule over Korea was genuinely on par with the holocaust, in terms of the Germans treatment of the Jews and how Japan treated Koreans (I’m not making that up or exaggerating, I learned this in college and all I can say is Japan’s PR team is unmatched). So, there’s still a lot of political tension btw Korea and Japan.
    They’re in such close proximity and share a lot today culturally but every now and then there are incidents that flare up conflicts btw the two nations and the Jimin shirt controversy has to be one of the biggest in recent history. As the video explained, It led to Korean ARMYs writing a 160+ page document (in various languages) called The White Paper Project that they then distributed to international ARMYs to help educate us on Korea and Japan’s history. (I’ll link that whole presentation she did over on today’s patreon video bc even if you don’t react to it, it’s a fantastic history lesson on BTS and the impact of ARMY)
    There was so much that went into that situation (historically and during that controversy) that I don’t even think I could fit it all in a comment. I’d have to write you guys an essay

  • @NyxHel
    @NyxHel Před 20 dny +14

    10:20 it's kinda a mix. it actually almost always starts with the fandoms. all those accusations were from the fds of big3 groups.....what they'd do is pick out random BTS photoshoots and releases, go hunting in the photoshoots of their own faves, and keep comparing and accusing when the similarities are basic. it's hittweets after hittweets for weeks, posts over posts in k-forums for months, it kinda had become a sport to them to harass BTS with the 'plagiarism' tag. they'd make so much noise, then shady ass media would pick up this topics under the "fans claim/netizens say" pretense and perpetuate that nonsense further.
    big3 have a lot of contacts in the media, wont be surprised if they're behind the smear campaigns of any rising groups(and mind you, kpop has a LOT of one hit wonders, makes one wonder how so many end up fizzling out due to scandals)

    For American music media and the awards....you should do a little research and see who owns controlling shares in the magazines like Billboard (and the charts) Rolling Stone etc as well as who owns the shares to some record label and on board of directors of the american awards. You'll find a "corp" controlling almost all the music media. They are controlling what we in North America, consume.

    That ms postponement law was literally nicknamed 'the BTS law' because it applied to BTS only lol
    But on the serious note, people were demanding BTS to serve since forever (I believe, even when JK was underage), and the media helped the narrative by downplaying BTS's achievements. There is a law for classical musucians which allows them not to serve in case they win an unternational competition award. How many intl awards does BTS have?
    On the other hand, the goverment was using BTS for their own good, pushing them into politics and keeping them on short leash, basically manipulating them. Even now, when BTS members are in active ms, they try to pull them out for some promotions and cover-ups. BTS were so tired of this they just said f u and enlisted. Everyone and their mommas were begging BTS to reconsider their decision because they understood the consequences of BTS leaving. Thankfully, BTS will be somewhat free from this circus after they complete their ms.

    Steph & Wes. Thank you both for always having interesting insights and conversations in your videos. I have always found it interesting that you fell into the BTS rabbit hole via their Run BTS programs first before experiencing their music and witnessing their talents. Their personalities and sincerity are some of the major factors which connects so many ARMYs to them.
    Regarding SK military service exemption is such a touchy subject to most South Koreans especially to most young men who are required to serve. It is often view "unfair" that award winning classical musicians , medaled atheletes and even medal winning pro-gamers (ie Faker's esport team) got military exemptions while BTS who has no doubt contributed more to South Korea's prestige & economy was not granted the exemption. Note: BTS did not want, nor did they ever plan to ask for an exemption because they knew that it would be a no-win situation for them. They would be in-debted to the corrupted government to used BTS however they want. Also each of the members always felt a sense of duty to serve their country as their fathers did. (V even shared how his father's stories about his time in the military inspired V to looking forward to serve with honor!) The sad part is their original plan was to all serve after their Map of the Soul world tour in 2020 but Covid ruined their plans and timing of going into the military. So for years, they got dragged by the general public for not serving (Jin & RM spoke about hearing all the negative things being said about them not serving all the while they already had made their plans to serve which kept on getting delay to due to different circumstances!) Remember, many peoples jobs depended on BTS, so they can not simply leave for the military without having everything set in place that their absence won't affect the company too much! Now that they are all serving (and Jin coming back in 3 days!) they are free from the government and the general publics opinions! They all have worked SO HARD in preparing so much for ARMY prior to joining the military that ARMY has not felt abandon or alone. They had time everything so well that there isn’t much down time! Can you believe that they have released over 120 songs since their "hiatus"?!? That's a crazy amount of music which has charted extremely well dispite them not being able to be here to promoted it! THANK YOU TO BTS FOR ALWAYS WORKING SO HARD ... now take some time for yourselves to re-engerize! ARMY will always be here waiting for you to return!

It was really bad, like the conservatives in japan started calling the boys n*zi and fabricating stuff to the point where a Jewish heritage museum did a post talking about the faking news and local friends irl started asking me how could I still support the boys and the white paper project was truly what I used to talk to them about how it was all slander and prove my point without looking like a conspiracy theorist. 29:10 no but if I didnt actually see it happen to multiple other groups/actors id never buy into such dramatic shit either😭
    like that society is very hyper focused and narrow. one scandal ACTUALLY ends careers fr, esp if said person isnt well established, and even for established names it's a tag that latches on. kr society is very big on pretense of morality so they enforce that "good ppl" face on celebs very harshly to the point of harassment.
    young celebs if sighted drinking, clubbing, smoking, being rude are whacked in k-forums pretty badly. the antifans actually are crazy dedicated BECAUSE of this hyper focused mentality. like ofc they'd antifan those they hate, if a rumor manages to stick, scandals ACTUALLY ends careers. one of the popular stories being of tablo where an antifan rumor of him 'faking a Stanford degree' (kr are big on educational clout) actually dogged him for years despite him recording and talking with the Stanford staff😭 like... physically dogged him, stalked him....he legit used to be scared of leaving his house.
    so as absurd as the petition and calls sounds, this kinda entitlement is built in BECAUSE a lot of time companies give in into pressure to avoid/stop neg publicity, it kinda breeds wannabe manager netizens. if there's no pushback from the victims supporters, antis pretty much harass ppl into obscurity. thankfully ARMYs only grew in size, so we were still able to take whackings/attacking back in order to protect bangtan by clearing rumors and bullying harassers into silence.

Now everyone does it. Also that Group who accused them did wear school uniform but it was just in their MV and the song had nothing to do with School etc. While BTS wore school uniform as the the Album were about School eg the oppressiveness of the South Korean School system and also about topic's sounding the 'Concept' of School such as the throughts, feeling, emotions that school pupils go through eg Puberty so they whole thing was laughable that anyone could said they were 'copying'.

    58:30 oh i didnt realise this video never expands on this. FOR EXEMPTION topic.
    basically the main discourse about who deserves and what qualifies. exemptions should be given to ppl who bring national 'prestige' so by that logic a lot of olympians have gotten it, esp ones with medals. there's also some classical musicians who've gotten in but im not sure what merits they had. recently fakers eSports team also got it, i think they won smth? In asian games i think? Idk, but they had a LOT of whackings, the gp does NOT like ppl getting away.
    but still, in that logic BTS does qualify. they HAVE bought a lot of national prestige, thats undeniable. so what the main contention for them was, 'did they do it for themselves or did they do it for the country' which was honestly such a copout....like even the olympians want the wins for themselves bruh😭 so as the ministry kept dragging the issue on, gp would drag BTS for wanting to run away from 'duty' when they basically chose their career for fame and got popular...not because they wished to bring korea prestige?? there's a snobby outlook at pop culture entities and their reasons to be in their career path. so they say, your reasons for doing your job were money and fame, you DID NOT do it for the country's sake. sounds like excuses to me tbh, resentment for celebs 'getting away' for things normal men cant ig. sucked because BTS never asked for it in the first place, it was pitched by some politicians in the opposing party(ig for clout, rather than actual care, but it started the insane discourse)
    insane because they have never not talked about korea positively, always sharing tidbits of their culture, ALWAYS EATING!! SO MUCH TASTY STUFF!! that i get curious and look up all the names they say 😂 they have a whole song in k-trad instruments in IDOL??? like tf they want from them, a honor pact written with their blood???

    • @NyxHel
      @NyxHel Před 20 dny +1

      In 2019, the other agencies went to KOMCA(music association) they(w/o bighit) decided to send a letter to the govt asking for exemption for pop artists, because they knew BTS with their accolades were the best bet to get a motion passed for their own moneymakers. with them making BTS the face of that petition, it started off the attacks BTS got by prickly netizens for "wanting exemptions" when neither they nor bh participated in that nonsense.
      But it did start off a discourse that politicians would toy with, and everytime they'd yap it would start a new hate train for BTS 'for not being honorable countrymen' 2020 is when jin was due to file for serving, also the year they finally had the breakthrough with dynamite, and that's the year GOVT finally decided to amend the law to allow pop artists with Order of Merit to postpone for two years.
      Order of Merit btw is only given to pop icons whove been in the industry for minimum 10-15years and have made great impact 😂😂😂 BTS are the youngest to get it, only within 5y in 2018 thx to their global impact. there's no way anyone else is getting that in time or have even close to the impact before the enlistment deadline of 28y comes😂 so they basically made it for BTS.
      but they did keep yapping about it until 2022 too which continued the hate, they'd ask way too many diplomatic favors too, forcing them to rearrange their own plans. so they finally decided to just announce the hiatus+enlistment once their obligations were done, didnt even wait or bother for the govt to be in session.

    • @NyxHel
      @NyxHel Před 20 dny +1

      in a way FANS did want them to be exempted and did think they, of all Koreans, deserved to get exempted for their impact, esp when we see the other's who were exempted and what they'd achieved in comparison to BTS but when we realised how resentful and prickly the gp responds on the topic and how BTS also treads very lightly on the topic, always showing a willingness to enlist when the time comes, and how they're getting attacked for things they didn't even asked for, ppl resigned themselves to correcting misinfo about the enlistment 'demand' and be silently resentful of SKs blue house tbh.
      fans of other groups were very horrible too, spread so much misinfo. stupid, because if they supported bts' exemption, they can use their case as a precedent to get their own faves exempted. but nope, they got an opportunity to bash BTS which they did for YEARS. bragging how their faves were "real men" and how BTS are running from responsibility yada yada.... highly racist tbh, since ifans are mostly from white countries trynna speak on pocs... anyways.

    Thank u so much for this amazing and thoughtful reaction! A lot of the things happening in the K-industry are coming from the "big 3" companies and their connections and media power. There are literally firms in SK dedicated to spreading online hate. And BTS were never accused of actual plagiarism of music, only this idiocy of hair colours, nail colours, sets, clothes, etc. SK idols with proven plagiarism of music are not even spoken about if they came from the big companies back then. The target, as usual, was BTS because they gained international success FIRST, and then SK had no choice but to accept them. It all comes to jealousy. BTS made their success through blood, sweat, and tears without any industry support, and that is a thorn in the eye of the industry. And ARMY's mentality is this in a nutshell: if there's hate, stream and buy BTS music - overcome it with more success. ARMYs once charted the whole BTS discography on US Itunes after BTS were clearly snubbed from one award show - no hate #s, but more buying and streaming. That's the difference between us and kpop stans.
    And I understand now flabbergasted you are watching this - the K mistreatment is so ridiculous, for such absurd reasons it's unthinkable for a rational human being and the Western one - racism and xenophobia at its finest.
    Btw the woman who spoke about the White Paper Project and BTS and Japan 2018 controversy is Prof. Lee Jiyoung; she's a philosophy PhD and Professor of Film Studies; I actually met her at the first BTS conference that was held in London and was organized by Kingston University. She's an amazing person, and she has a great book, "BTS: Art Revolution," published in English in 2019. Also, during the conference, there was actually a report on the BTS plagiarism accusations by a law master's student (as I remember, not sure), and she literally showed the absurdity of all arguments that were stated throughout official media regarding "plagiarism" about hair color, nail colors, clothes, sets etc.
