- We're rebooting Snake Oil with this review of the Abbey Road Vinyl plugin by WAVES. Waves promises to simulate the sound of a vinyl record with this... But does it really deliver?

Don't worry, waves plugins are always on sale
I wonder why would that be 🤔
@@rickyricardo2006 marketing 101, make the consumer feel like he's winning
@@Reneromero08 Yeah, I got tricked into that a year ago. I'd heard of Waves before, but not about their constant sales. Long story short, I got the J37 Tape emulator and H-Comp for like $40, I thought it was a great deal because it was a "limited time" offer. Thought it was a great win. A year later they're literally the same price.
I am waiting for Waves to come out with left handed versions of their plugins.
I love this plugin - it gives more depth on the masterbus.
The noise, crackle and clicks sound should be a loop but follow the turntable spin speed (optionally 33, 45, 78 rpm) and change sound (with a slight increase in speed) over time. If you want to imitate the turntable, of course. :)
This plugin is really good on the mix buss. The plugin adds some crosstalk and it can bring nice character and depth to a mix.
I think it's best attribute is how it can end a song. The record slowing down to a stop effect is pretty realistic and pretty dope. And it's time adjustable.
You;re not using the plugin to it's intended purpose. The sound FX are kind of gimmicky but the plugin has a unique purpose you didn't mention.
subbed, je legt het super chill uit, super nice vids ! keep on going!
you were tweaking for several minutes with the bypass button engaged
These videos are so nessary... please don't stop...
We don't have enough money for these videos not to exist
This plugin is just excellent for lofi production, makes nice things to transient, can be used as a tape stop effect, the flutter and wow are very nice, I use it a lot on drums and can be used also as a nice noise generator...I have izotope vynil but like this plugin much more and was very happy with the purchase, I use it a lot..the presets are very good and give a nice starting point... I personally highly recommend it and would not call it a snake oil but every opinion can be respected..this is mine☺️peace
I would probably use the loop for a project I’ll be working on where I want the songs to start with the sound of vinyl. But I wouldn’t pay the full price for this. I’ve been considering getting the whole abbey road bundle, it seems to be a much better deal on Sweetwater atm but do you think the other plugins in this are snake oil as well?
Great video again. Good to have the Snake Oil segment back..
That's great but how does it sound on sandstorm?
Did you add the TG22410?
Great to see you doing snake oil again!
Hell yeah. Great video. You're the first person that I've seen to be using reaper in their video. I love reaper.
Is there a way to turn this noise down? hmmmm wonder what that noise dial is doing? ....
Yes. Good decision to bring bank that section. It's so much fun ;)
out of topic but....Great bass sound!! what´s the synth?
Can you please review the NLS Non-Linear Summer by waves?
As it will be a long time to aford good analog summing... this is looking exstreamly exciting
the slow down fx is one of the coolest
Illformed Tape Stop literally does that for free.
Do you have a link to your productions?
thank you for theese snake oil videos!
I use this plugin and Slate Digital's Virtual Tape Machines on individual tracks to create an analogue feel to productions and I find it works. I'm not into the gimmicky things like surface noise, wow and flutter or phase distortion, but the subtle analogue feel it adds to the tracks helps ease away the clinical squeaky clean digital sound and adds meat to things like drums, fattens bass etc. I wouldn't call it snake oil, but I did the smart thing and bought it in a sale. By the way I can rhyme in Dutch. Sinaasappelsap Broodje Appelflap. :D
I like this video because you're critical and hardly anybody else on YT seems to dare to do that. At least, this time you also indicated where the plugin does something potentially useful.
Because most of those guys are sponsored, he is not. The other guys gets the plug ins for free and therefor they cant really be honest and critical..... Sad...
@@jaffasplaffa1 what about guys who aren't on YT who paid for the waves stuff? Honestly you think the guys who endorse WAVES really NEED the WAVES company? Trust me they don't WAVES folds tomorrow their careers move along just fine. I'm sure all the criticism came before they designed the plugin. we have no problem telling studios and plugin manufacturers how we feel about their gear and we still will use it flaws and all because the benefits outweigh the inconveniences. Its what pros will do to a point. Its a dichotomy sometimes its tolerable sometimes not we still have to make music and we have options. we just have learned in this age not to be dysfunctionally intolerant of a piece of gears shortcomings. Its only a tool.
WHOOOOOOOOOOOO! It's back baby!
Yes! Snake oil is back! Thank you! I love these videos of yours!
What's the name of the Song?
They solve all the thing with loops of few seconds?? ????
I agree. It's aesthetically pleasing but it's effectiveness leaves a bit to be desired. I use Reason. The "Vinyl" setting on the Audiomatic Rack Extension is dope. I use that effect quite often in my production. Thanks for saving me money. lol
Not only you missed the snake oil video series :)
Waves get sooo lazy these days. Incredible they just implemented just loops. There are great alternatives from our friend in Italy, SKNote who does fantastic emulations for small budget.
Waves seems to have reached their limit. They still have their reference plugins but they are all old and there seems not to come out something new with such a quality anymore.
To make such effects I build my own with Melda MXXX. You can build literally everything with it.
you have to use clicks, noise and crackle together to get the real magic happen ;)
Is it snake oil to you or is it snake oil for everyone? The wow and flutter and tape stop fx doing great and is useful for hip-hop.
I've always preferred the izotope vinyl from it's simplicity and ability to change the year of the vinyl, which I think is a very cool and usable feature. This one does seem a tad gimmicky but I've used it on rare occasions.
The year setting can be a secret weapon on iZotope. May be the same on here. I haven't used it myself. Vinyl does the trick for me.
Digital Analogue Noise....whatever will they think of next?
an analog box that produces digital noise?
It is actually a very good one, when used thoughtfully
Love the snake oil series. Can you do sound theory's gulfoss eq?
Love your honesty! Dankeschön...
No Sandstorm? Not a great start, buddy!
😂😂😂 completely forgot it!
yeah bring back Sandstorm!
I think I prefer Snake Oil 2.0 but I'm not sure why.
I use this plug-in frequently when I'm trying to achieve a vintage/retro sound. I find it useful, but it is a bit of a cpu hog, strangely. I paid $29. 🤓
In this case I suggest you to measure the frequency response changes with white or pink noise, for an objective "Snake Oil or not" judging.. Also run a sine wave to see if any distortion accurs with an spectrum analizer... Maybe you can run an impulse through it, and check if the phase changes too...
I'd pay £25 all day long for it just because it looks fun to play with. Plus, the more you play with it the more chance you might stumble upon some sweet spot that might just give your recordings some kind of Abbey Road vibe to them....especially for guitar based oldies music blokes like me. There's no way though that I would pay £249 for it. Not for what would essentially be a toy. If I'd known that it was on sale for £25 I would have bought it but I think the sale will be over, now it's 4 months since this video was made.🤔
Bf sale now
It's only SnakeOil because of the way they're marketing it.
If Waves said it was an FX plugin instead of the secret _Magic Fairy Dust®_ from Abbey Road it wouldn't be such a letdown.
As far as the "loop" - I think that makes sense... It's supposed to be a vinyl record. A record would spin on a loop when the music finished. And it's funny because that's what this really is anyway; people could sample a record for the same effect. Cheaper, and it would probably sound better.
What's even funnier is that while some people are trying to make their vintage vinyl records sound loud, modern and _clean,_ there's another bunch of people trying to make their music sound _just_ like what the first group is trying to _fix!_ Ironic.
Also, I would recommend iZotope Vinyl as first option since has just as many features and it's FREE. And if for some reason _that_ didn't suit your Vinylization needs, then try Abbey Road Vinyl _-but only when it's on SALE! (i.e. $29)_
Love these Snake Oil vids. Keep 'em coming. ;)
Please review Scheps Omni Channel from Waves please
I'm still waiting for you to discover the "UI" button that is at the top right of every plugin window in REAPER that disables the photo-realistic UI and just gives you sliders for each of the parameters. I always hear you complaining about electronic plugins trying to look like real-world gear, but I've never once heard you mention or seen you use this very handy feature of REAPER. I get the feeling that you're using about a tenth of what REAPER could be doing to make your workflow more fun and efficient.
Nobody cares, reaper is shit anyway.
I used to make some LoFi Hiphop tracks, this would've been interesting lol. I just got the same results by making a really nice vinyl crackle loop myself etc. way better to just shape your own sound.
Yes It's back!!! Even if I like this plugin ^^
Waves is the super bundle , not everyone will like all of the plugin . But if you have the licences for the whole all . Why not , I have had the pleasure of being in the room and watch these masters and meters kick butt on a real VM70 in Memphis Tn , With L.Nix and Company and my life long friend in life and Music . The Hardware is amazing and all of the racks of the best masters from Memphis from L.Nix and Company in the past . The Analog running thru a L2 Hardware into a hard drive CD,s and vinyl . I can say the plug is just pretty cool for a simple on the quick . But use the real "S### " it will blow your mind in the right professor of the lathe . Jeff Powell at Phillips has one thejztc'#
Don't Stop please!!! You're very informative about..
:)
I like snakeoil Videos. You Really have a Good ans professional View in These Plug-ins! Thank you ans please Keep up the Good Work! :)
I love how he says he's not gonna read the manual as if it was a crime
Cool!!
Flutter and wow can be great if you design a retro style tape delay or if you are programming some Melotron like string pads and you run them through an emulation with flutter and wow.
That they used loops is lame. Melda has already a great tape stop effect in MRythmizer and U-he has a great tape emulation. Do we really need this new plugin?
Phase distortion is normally a thing occurring in frequence modulation. In this plugin isn't it more a phase shifting effect?
They have the logo of Throbbing Gristle on the record...
It's complete snake oil. But 250 dollars? Are they gone mad? 30 is too much already.
SNAKE OIL PARTY!
Where is the rest of your eyebrows?
You should Try GW mixcentric! It is extraordinary! Game changer! 👍
That loop crackle is not even on 33rpm, better use a sample from real vinyl (easy to find on internet, or just sample the endless final loop on every vinyl)
Yeah, I noticed that.
I use this thing live over my master buss. I turn off all that noise etc as who would want that any ways. For live all I do is add a little drive and it fattens ups the mix nicely. At the end of the day all plugins could be classed as snake oil, they are digital emulations of a real thing so what the F did you expect.
Com Cruise must be using that plugin.
I really like this plugin it's not snake oil but if you use loads of analog maybe it's a tad snakey 🤣
Automate the vinylstop ;)
"it's more about feeling good than...," well yeah. The point of music is to make people feel good, melancholy, nostalgic, manic, et cet. Also, -liked & subscribed.
I prefer the old version of snake oil (with more poison please)
Funny thing in using studios throughout NYC in the 90's where everyone had u87's 1176's LA3 or LA2's you had some good and some bad at hit factory engineers used to make us write serial numbers down of certain mics so they'd use them the next time they came into the studio. Point is everyone talking about how close to real this stuff is don't know that even real analog had its drawbacks. Point is can you use it. this stuff whether 250 39 or free gets used by people in the industry with no attachment to waves other than they paid dough for it. when something better comes we use it. Stop the trolling and whining pick your best tools and go make great music. Period.
I would pay 4 dollars for that plugin
FREE VINYL plugin from IZOTOPE
I use it for warmth
Snake Oil!
I can see it’s use for hip-hop guys. People who are flipping digital samples but want a bit more inconsistency to mirror the vinyl+MPC workflow but overall I can agree that it’s kinda just a gimmick. Great video! Definitely glad to see these videos back on the channel. :D
I can tell by your comments that you haven’t really used this plugin. Make a great mix, turn it on and adjust your level so that you are not clipping, add your mastering EQ and Limiter and really listen to the difference. Sonically, you will understand that the difference without it; It is significantly different. To say otherwise is simply denying the fact that this indeed will give character, Tone and guidance to a better sounding mix. Snake Oil Not!
Buying any Waves plugin not on sale is pretty stupid if you ask me. They lower the prices like every two weeks.
Nah....it’s ALWAYS on sale
You forgot to try 'Drive' knob.... the track is nice, the plugin - I think it's worth 29$
I personally don't like these "all-in-one" type plugins that just do 10 things. I'd prefer to have 10 plugins in my processing chain and deliberately choose which I use one and why - but I guess that when you're in a hurry you could just slap something like that on, turn a few knobs and call it a day. I wouldn't!
Great to have snakeoil back. The name alone is too good to let go.
Vinyl clicks and hiss loops ? that´s really lame and so easy to accomplish with a few audiofiles ... the best are Goldbaby´s Dirt ad Layers.
Concerning whow and flutter, which is really useful sometimes :
could you review the goodhertz plugin suite ?
they have amazing GUIs !!
most $200 plugins are really worth $20 or $30 bucks
Yeah I like your snake oil videos! I agree with you about this plugin, its not worth its listed price. But Waves these days seems to have perpetual sales going on...
You do realise that records go round ..so yes it's a loop
But because the groove goes inward the clicks will not be a loop, they will change, a tick may be there for 5 cycles and then be gone. So he's right, it shouldn't be a loop.
also, the loop is ridiculously short, which make it obvious
The ole 29.99(9/11) company...Kings of grainy snake juice.
Izotope gives it for free.
Man! this video is more about you proving you are right rather than the actual product itself lol. I bought this plugin recently and it's incredible! this video is snake oil right here imo lol why tf did YT recommend me this nonsensical video?
If a so-called audio file system sounded like this sounds with theThe plug-in added that said audio file would spend thousands and thousands of dollars correct this is just a distortion adding plug-in I have never seen anything so stupid
I'm all for potentially critical reviews, and agree that you don't get a lot of that from youtube channels. But I found this video inane. Honestly rather stick to scanning gearslutz comments for critique of this stuff.
I thought we could do scratch. That sucks. Izotope Vinyl is better and free.
Funny thing is the guy you got the mail from, Matti Virtanen. Virtanen... Hmm..Ville Virtanen! Darude!! Confirmed, Whytse is working with Darude.
Yes. I like the new snake oil better! You could called it "new and improved" but then you'd have to do a video about whether or not snake oil videos are snake oil.
Sounds like an idea!
😂 he’s so annoyingly good. Bro it’s “WAAUH” not “WOA”
I cannot trust pretty much any of these guys on YT who NEVER question or have anything negative to say about any plugins or hardware, because like anything not all products are good nor what they claim. I know you take a lot heat and hate from the fanboys, but at least you put it out there and question it, which is more than I can say for vast majority of of sheep and shills. But yes this plugin is trash.
YOu need to watch the Dave Darlington (Waves) tutorial On the Vintl first before you give a review.
looks aren't that important, sound is
Computers can't produce "true" random numbers or "life" or "happenings." Old analog machines, in their own way, can & do. Which is SOMETIMES magical, & sometimes annoying. Can you imagine Cream, Hendrix, or the Beatles, etc, etc, using a digital drum machine instead of: fill in the blank.
I have plenty of noise in my bedroom studio,,, I don't want more, tape saturation or tube saturation will do,, use your stock plugins
get Izotope's vinyl plugin instead. it's free and does the same thing.
messi!!!
be careful some companies don t like your views you ll get sued.
A Well cut record, properly cleaned and played back properly doesn't sound like that.
Incorrect. All the problems you are hearing from vinyl is from MM cartdriges. Moving Coil cartdriges don't have that problem. And even less so with Fine Line Stylus.
lower your buffer rate to nothing and you are going to get clicks, unless you have a really good processor
Waves seems to be yet another company that is more about marketing than anything else.
Why can't they just be honest and say $29 is the product price. No sales. Thats the price.
Instead, they gotta play this BS game where if someone wants to buy something from their catalogue, they got to wait till there is a sale day not to get ripped off.
I think this is a nice little plugin which pulls together common effects to conveniently make your sound nostalgic. So the price you pay is purely for convience to do something you could do with any decen't DAW's native effects chained together. They just do it in an organised and pretty way.
It's a nice plugin. They just need to be honest about pricing.
