      @@Reneromero08 Yeah, I got tricked into that a year ago. I'd heard of Waves before, but not about their constant sales. Long story short, I got the J37 Tape emulator and H-Comp for like $40, I thought it was a great deal because it was a "limited time" offer. Thought it was a great win. A year later they're literally the same price.

    The noise, crackle and clicks sound should be a loop but follow the turntable spin speed (optionally 33, 45, 78 rpm) and change sound (with a slight increase in speed) over time. If you want to imitate the turntable, of course. :)

    I think it's best attribute is how it can end a song. The record slowing down to a stop effect is pretty realistic and pretty dope. And it's time adjustable.

    This plugin is just excellent for lofi production, makes nice things to transient, can be used as a tape stop effect, the flutter and wow are very nice, I use it a lot on drums and can be used also as a nice noise generator...I have izotope vynil but like this plugin much more and was very happy with the purchase, I use it a lot..the presets are very good and give a nice starting point... I personally highly recommend it and would not call it a snake oil but every opinion can be respected..this is mine☺️peace

    I use this plugin and Slate Digital's Virtual Tape Machines on individual tracks to create an analogue feel to productions and I find it works. I'm not into the gimmicky things like surface noise, wow and flutter or phase distortion, but the subtle analogue feel it adds to the tracks helps ease away the clinical squeaky clean digital sound and adds meat to things like drums, fattens bass etc. I wouldn't call it snake oil, but I did the smart thing and bought it in a sale. By the way I can rhyme in Dutch. Sinaasappelsap Broodje Appelflap. :D

I'm sure all the criticism came before they designed the plugin. we have no problem telling studios and plugin manufacturers how we feel about their gear and we still will use it flaws and all because the benefits outweigh the inconveniences. Its what pros will do to a point. Its a dichotomy sometimes its tolerable sometimes not we still have to make music and we have options. we just have learned in this age not to be dysfunctionally intolerant of a piece of gears shortcomings. Waves get sooo lazy these days. Incredible they just implemented just loops. There are great alternatives from our friend in Italy, SKNote who does fantastic emulations for small budget.
    Waves seems to have reached their limit. They still have their reference plugins but they are all old and there seems not to come out something new with such a quality anymore.

    In this case I suggest you to measure the frequency response changes with white or pink noise, for an objective "Snake Oil or not" judging.. Also run a sine wave to see if any distortion accurs with an spectrum analizer... Maybe you can run an impulse through it, and check if the phase changes too...

  • @JammyGit
    @JammyGit Před 5 lety +3

    I'd pay £25 all day long for it just because it looks fun to play with. Plus, the more you play with it the more chance you might stumble upon some sweet spot that might just give your recordings some kind of Abbey Road vibe to them....especially for guitar based oldies music blokes like me. There's no way though that I would pay £249 for it. Not for what would essentially be a toy. If I'd known that it was on sale for £25 I would have bought it but I think the sale will be over, now it's 4 months since this video was made.🤔

  • @lifewhyz
    @lifewhyz Před 5 lety +2

    It's only SnakeOil because of the way they're marketing it.
    If Waves said it was an FX plugin instead of the secret _Magic Fairy Dust®_ from Abbey Road it wouldn't be such a letdown.
    As far as the "loop" - I think that makes sense... It's supposed to be a vinyl record. A record would spin on a loop when the music finished. And it's funny because that's what this really is anyway; people could sample a record for the same effect. Cheaper, and it would probably sound better.
    What's even funnier is that while some people are trying to make their vintage vinyl records sound loud, modern and _clean,_ there's another bunch of people trying to make their music sound _just_ like what the first group is trying to _fix!_ Ironic.
    Also, I would recommend iZotope Vinyl as first option since has just as many features and it's FREE. And if for some reason _that_ didn't suit your Vinylization needs, then try Abbey Road Vinyl _-but only when it's on SALE! (i.e. $29)_

    I'm still waiting for you to discover the "UI" button that is at the top right of every plugin window in REAPER that disables the photo-realistic UI and just gives you sliders for each of the parameters. I always hear you complaining about electronic plugins trying to look like real-world gear, but I've never once heard you mention or seen you use this very handy feature of REAPER. I get the feeling that you're using about a tenth of what REAPER could be doing to make your workflow more fun and efficient.

    Flutter and wow can be great if you design a retro style tape delay or if you are programming some Melotron like string pads and you run them through an emulation with flutter and wow.
    That they used loops is lame. Melda has already a great tape stop effect in MRythmizer and U-he has a great tape emulation. Do we really need this new plugin?
    Phase distortion is normally a thing occurring in frequence modulation. In this plugin isn't it more a phase shifting effect?
    They have the logo of Throbbing Gristle on the record...
    It's complete snake oil. But 250 dollars? Are they gone mad? 30 is too much already.

    Funny thing in using studios throughout NYC in the 90's where everyone had u87's 1176's LA3 or LA2's you had some good and some bad at hit factory engineers used to make us write serial numbers down of certain mics so they'd use them the next time they came into the studio. Point is everyone talking about how close to real this stuff is don't know that even real analog had its drawbacks. Point is can you use it. this stuff whether 250 39 or free gets used by people in the industry with no attachment to waves other than they paid dough for it. when something better comes we use it. Stop the trolling and whining pick your best tools and go make great music. Period.

Make a great mix, turn it on and adjust your level so that you are not clipping, add your mastering EQ and Limiter and really listen to the difference. Sonically, you will understand that the difference without it; It is significantly different. To say otherwise is simply denying the fact that this indeed will give character, Tone and guidance to a better sounding mix. Snake Oil Not!

    Waves seems to be yet another company that is more about marketing than anything else.
    Why can't they just be honest and say $29 is the product price. No sales. Thats the price.
    Instead, they gotta play this BS game where if someone wants to buy something from their catalogue, they got to wait till there is a sale day not to get ripped off.
    I think this is a nice little plugin which pulls together common effects to conveniently make your sound nostalgic. So the price you pay is purely for convience to do something you could do with any decen't DAW's native effects chained together. They just do it in an organised and pretty way.
    It's a nice plugin. They just need to be honest about pricing.
