  • In this video I show you what happens when you put mentos in coke under oil! Then I actually measure the amount of CO2 that comes off of coke when you put a mentos in it vs when you don't. Is there more CO2 that comes off when you add mentos?

    Would an effervescent tablet (eg vitamin C) have a more violent reaction in coke than in water, and if so would it only be due to releasing the dissolved CO2 or would the acid in the coke contribute to the acid-base reaction of the hydrated tablet? Presumably it would release more gas overall because the reaction itself produces CO2. And what about an indigestion tablet with only a base in it?

    I put dry ice in a cauldron of soda once for a Halloween themed birthday party. Made Dr pepper slush when it finished fogging (sublimating?) and it was delicious and this reminded me of it from the top down. Adding more CO2 removed the carbonation, ironically.
    That could be a video idea, I wonder if it removes the carbonation faster or slower because there would be a little more air pressure but way more surface area to nucleate on.... Unless the leidenfrost effect cancels that out

    • @zer5034
      @zer5034 Před 2 lety

      I would assume it removes the carbonation faster than normal because of the more surface area between the soda and CO2. If the cauldron isn't closed off then there wouldn't really be an increase in pressure, as the CO2 pushes out to the lower pressure air. And I also don't think the leidenfrost effect would affect it too much, as all it does is prevent the dry ice from touching the soda cause of the small layer of CO2 gas, but then the soda can still nucleate on the CO2. It would be a fun thing to test, also whether it's faster than soda+mentos or not.
