The Brooklyn Nets Are Breaking Analytics...

  • After a rough start, the Brooklyn Nets have morphed into a major threat to the NBA. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are firing on all cylinders, and Jacque Vaughn has been the best replacement for Steve Nash that they could've asked for.
With Ben Simmons finding his place within this team as a compliment to KD and Kyrie, this team is proving that they're a real threat to make it out of the East. Their mid range scoring defies modern NBA analytical philosophy, and it bodes well for the postseason.

Mid range is the most needed shot in every hoopers bag, if you can get to those spots it’s butter with proper footwork it opens up the entire game… layups and 3 pointers come so much easier, it opens up the entire floor, and it warms you up to knock down a mid range, a shot that creates your rhythm. I am glad the Nets finally have a proper offensive system. In previous years, their offense was predicated on ISO ball. A style that is unstainable and highly predictable. Furthermore, their offensive system being based on shooting mid-range shots and not just three-point shots will help them during play-offs games where shooting badly from three. Thus, they will not fall into the trap being a live by the three die by the three team.

Actually in the playoffs is when the midrange in todays game becomes the open space hell even in regular season games, but especially in the playoffs where they will run good 3 point shooting teams off the line.
For example, GS has been top 5 and first once in midrange shots during their stretch of championships.
They werent necessarily so good because they were so good at shooting 3's. They were so good because they shot from everywhere on the field wherever there'd be space for a shotx

We had so much problems coaching wise man. The roster upgrades this off-season were really good. I knew about yuta for a while, his defensive hustle and nice three point shot was exactly what we needed at his size. Tj warren was such a good pickup. I knew he was out for a while but if he was ever going to be healthy it’s dangerous to have a 3 level scorer like him off the bench. Him kd and kyrie on the court is just unfair. I had faith claxton would finally get it right. To have an inside out defender like him is very unique and he will only continue to get better. Ben Simmons is the key to getting our offense rolling and I know he is going to continue to improve. To have someone like him who is Big mobile, a playmaker and a defender on the court is just so good for kd and kyrie. They no longer have to bring the ball up all the time especially kd cause he got butterfingers nowadays. I know we had the Kai drama but it over now and to have all the drama over in the beginning of the season was a blessing in disguise. Vaughn setting plays to get scorers like kd, kai, warren and Seth open is really good stuff and we have the shooters to take advantage of almost every play. Vaughn has earned my respect and praise and I’m glad to see that he’s blossomed into such a good coach and gotten the trust of these guys. Not to mention he has a set core of players he will play when we are fully healthy and that’s kd,Kai,Ben,Royce, clax, warren,Joe,yuta, and sumner. Even tho analytics guys dump on the mid range shot, every year the best scorers in the league do a bulk of their damage from the mid-range. Analytics can't explain this. Fact of the matter is the mid-range shot is the least defended shot. Nobody guards around the free throw line, because of analytics. This creates a weakness in the defense that allows the offense to get a shot earlier in the clock, which reduces forced shots at the end of the shot clock, and probably leads to more offensive rebounds as well. I would be interested to know the correlation between teams that have more mid range attempts by percentage and what their total shot attempts are

Seth curry can do a solid job running the offense and can put away games when he's hot. Royce has had a couple great games this year. And Ben Simmons seems to be realizing he doesn't just need to be a role player. Super fun team to watcg.

No shot is more important than the other shots. You need paint play to keep the defense from being able to clog up the 3pt line/mid-range. You need 3pt shooting to space out the paint to help open up driving lanes. And you need mid range shots to pull the defense away from the paint and 3pt line--this opens up inside passing AND 3pt kick outs when you penetrate after a drive or pass into the high post.
Focusing on the midrange for a second:
You need a midrange game to help space the floor better, because if a team is playing you in drop coverage to force you to take mid range shots, this leaves you very open in that area, b/c they're selling out to the post and to the 3pt line and daring you to shoot a deep 2pt shot. If you make enough of them, the paint and 3pt line end up getting spaced out better for your offense, b/c they're equally as afraid of the midrange shot and can't commit fully to playing drop coverage as much.
If you're not proficient in the midrange, you'll get destroyed by teams that play drop coverage a lot like the bucks.
The warriors started punishing this by just taking 3pt shots from further beyond the line, which has now infected the rest of the league. Their case is interesting, b/c for slow footed big men, this ends up leading to them having to hedge really far out from the paint. If you have a good passing angle and are able to get the ball behind the 2 defenders involved in the action, you now have everything open to you, because the help and the original 2 defenders on the ball will now scramble to the man in the middle, likely leading to an open layup or a wide open 3pt shot as people lose track of their assignments.
You can counteract that by having your other players zone up (a triangle and 2), but it's overall a risky play that depends on the scouting report.

One thing that gets lost in the value of the mid range is that the closer you are to the basket, the easier and there fore more creative you can be with you shot creation a side step from 25 ft is alot harder than a step back from 15. The move doesn’t matter. It’s the distance

I watch all the Nets games. Ive payed close attention to how and why they have been winning so much. Their by far the most balanced team in the league. I looked up their stats 2 days ago. This video basically shows how unique they are offensively and it's because the THREAT, EFFICIENT PLAY AND VERSATILITY OF KD AND KYRIE. Most teams have an issue offensively that will cost them. The Warriors have the 3 point threat which leads to open slips for dunks and lays but no midrange play so if their missing 3's they will loose. Luka is so ball dominate without being an off ball threat that he hurts the team whenever he don't have the ball in his hands because he's not a catch and shoot threat. Same with the Lakers with Lebron. They have no consistent shooters and their 2 best players don't pose as deep threats being AD and Lebron. Same with Milwaukee cause Giannis isn't a shooter. Overall my point is Brooklyn has no weaknesses in their offensive game. The only thing that could slow then down is having Simmons and Claxton on the floor at the same time offensively because neither are threats as shooters so they dont run the typical high screen play offense and they run more dribble hand off screen play. Simmons and Claxton get mins together particularly because with KD, Claxton, and Simmons on the floor at the same time they pose a threat unlike any other team defensively. They can guard anywhere on the court particularly on the perimeter. Brooklyn leads the league in blocks too. If the role players for BK hit open shots, no major injuries, this team should win a chip this year. This video eluded to show their a great team defensively which will be key. I didn't realize how their breaking the mindset of midrange don't work. I didn't realize that only 29% of their fg attempts are close to the hoop. That also shows how efficient they are as shooters. If this all continues with Claxton and Simmons being an alley oop threat, then idk how you can slow them down.

  • @kristoffereberius2476

Best part about midrange shots is it puts guys in the paint for tip ins, rebounds and second attempts. It also gets you better open looks at three. Heavy three point teams often have a good game and a bad game. It's just not that consistent, any team against Steph curry going short for shot is just not likely to win. And as the three goes up everyone runs off to play d. Shots in the midrange has you following up for a rebound. Most rebound stats are largely junk as no one is competing for the ball, that's why so many point guards have huge rebound numbers
