In March of 2002, at a friend’s wedding in Kauai, we met a then very tall 89 year old man named Jim from Washington State.... who still carried his gold medal in his right pocket. It was one of the highlights of my life speaking with this man about his experiences on that day with Hitler watching who allowed us to take picture of us with him and hold his cherished medal. I wish I could post those here. I’ve thought of him on and off over the years, which led me to finding this video clip.♥️
I imagine. What a group of amazing boys (now men). I loved learned about their stories.
@@Joepaq Washington state as opposed to DC. Didn’t mean Washington state university
You should watch the movie also, "The Boys in the Boat". great movie, wonderful story they deserved the Gold
I read this book while in prison. It was a great book.
Nice film. The book "The Boys in the Boat" covering this UW crew is one of the more exciting sports books ever written.
+Steve Cyrus I read the book as well and it is one of the most exciting sports books ever
+Steve Cyrus One of the very best books I have ever read, period. The individuals becoming a team is just one of the facets.... the boat building, the coaching, the competition ... all amazing... read the book, you will not be disappointed imo.
isn't it something, how the start of every race in the book just grips you? I am loving it...I just finished the part where Washington sweeps the Hudson, and I couldn't have put the book down if an earthquake hit, it was so gripping... can't wait to see how things go in Germany hahahaha...well written. SUCH a story!
I just finished reading this book, & what a read. The author is a connoisseur of verbalizing scenes & emotions & events. It was outrageous how they the Olympic & German officials tried cheating on them in their final row. Reading the book was definitely not a waste of time.
I just not five minutes ago finished The Boys in the Boat. What an incredible story. What an incredible victory, both personally and collectively. I wish I could have met the crew.
I’m a varsity coxswain and literally I watched this so many times because it makes me feel happy
This is one of the best Olympic related stories you will ever read.
David James Brown's book "The Boys in the Boad," will have you cheering, praying, hoping, and crying throughout the telling of this marvelous historic event. Poor Don Hume,
one of the oarsmen, was willing to still take an oar despite having
what obviously was the flue. Sick until the day he walked aboard that
shell, he held to his commitment, and rowed with all his remaining
strength. The mens' bodies hurt so badly that all of them seemed to row
more like machines, than the exhausted and broken humans they'd become
in this competition. Robert Moch, the coaxswain, lied to the team repeatedly, telling them
they only had fifteen or twenty more rows before they would reach the
end. In reality, they had two and three times that left to finish.
Still, they held in and pulled it off, and won the 1936 top level rowing
competition. To my thinking, these fellows are the greatest of athletic
heroes and I will forever be proud of their achievement against the
fantasized supermen of the Nazi regime.
this is really a beautiful book that all Americans should read and try to emulate.
Fantastic book, and I listened on my phone (used to be called book on tape or CD) while I walk for exorcises. Keeps you going around the block because you want to hear more,
@@truthof7382 I just finished listening to it on my phone too. I have my phone with me when I am watering plants, sewing, cooking, walking etc. The reader is excellent and I certainly agree that the book is "fantastic." Now I am watching related CZcams videos. Happy Listening!
I just finished Boys in the Boat. It was the most profound book I have ever read. I feel in love with the 9 of them...most notably Joe Rantz, Bobby Moch and Don Hume. The USA Team was seriously handicapped by assignment to the two lanes hindered by side winds. Additionally the start signal was probably deliberately rigged to favor the Germans and Italians. Despite the fact that the stroke Don Hume briefly passed out from lack of oxygen while rowing with pneumonia, the power of the stroke combined with a record setting stroke rate of 44 per minute and heart rates as high as 170 to 200 bpm. This is the greatest story ever told!
"The Boys in the Boat" is such a great book. I recommend it for anyone who wants to get into rowing, or even if you just want a good book.
Perhaps the best book I’ve ever read. On so many levels.
This '36 crew has inspired countless generations of oarsmen and women
at the University of Washington.
I am proud to be included as part of this greatest rowing program in the world.
Bob Moch, the US Olympic coxswain, watched our practices when we were preparing for
the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley. Our victory there was a part of rowing history,
and the fine example these men set in Germany for us to follow was one of the most
inspirational efforts that we still celebrate as Huskies today. RIP brothers.
You are gone, but never forgotten. Go Dawgs!
This book is fantastic!. My dad was a young rowing spectator in 1936 and in his diary he refers to a "fairytail" ! He watched all the races life!
This video makes me proud to be an American
The Boys In The Boat is a fascinating book about this!
Love the book the Boys In the Boat. One of the best determination and strength of character stories that I have ever read,
Looked this up after just finishing Daniel Brown's stunning account... in tears! A thrilling and moving true story of success in adversity (and poverty) against the background of Nazi Germany & it's twisted ideals. This film is just a glimpse and unfortunately lacks commentary of the race...go and buy The Boys in the Boat, a beautifully written epic & one of the best books I've read in years!
I love this story. I read the book about 2 yrs ago and just now watched the movie! I loved the book and this film. Such a great American story.
book was awesome.
Reading it now . Amazing story . I live in Florida . The National rowing Championships start the 14th at Benderson Park literally two miles away from me . Very inspired to watch it !!!!
Rowing has been-and remains so today-an elitist sport, typically drawing men from Ivy League schools. Yet the men from Washington contrasted markedly to the oarsmen out East. They were neither the sons of senators and titans of industry, nor born in the lap of luxury. They came from modest beginnings, having spent summers working as loggers and fishermen. And somehow, ineffably and almost magically, these underdogs defied the odds and won the ‘36 Olympic Gold Medal, having discovered within themselves the power of rowing in harmony, and doing so with grace, composure, and relentless determination. Inspiring to say the least. I’m reminded of a quote: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Speaking of rowing today, it's not mostly elite Ivy Legue and men (women started rowing in the Olympics in 1976). Look up the schools who compete at the Head of the Charles, there are a variety especially when you include club teams.
The most amazing part was, from the book:
They were in the middle of the river, the worst position to be with the crosswinds which were horrendous that day. The Germans were given the first lane based on a system so biased that it guaranteed a victory for Germany with Italy right next to them in the second. (The shore was the most protected, USA at the start had a two length disadvantage because of how it was set up. Despite the US having the best time in the prelims, which is how it usually sets up the finals.) They didn't even hear the start, no starting gun was used. And the second seat in front of the coxswain was near death from pneumonia.
It was a miracle they won...
It's probably the biggest miracle they beat all those odds to do so.
Bravo to the Miracle 9!
Terrific book that I only learned about from a newspaper story on Mitt Romney (not a fan BTW). It was on his most favored reading list. Nagged my local library to order it and then read it cover to cover in a day or two. As a former rower in fours I can attest to the hard work and dedication of these men and their coaches. Highly recommended.
The boys in the boat 💪🏼
Awesome video, thank you
Wow amazing story
Just finished Boys in the Boat. What a fantastic book. This needs to be made into a movie and I hope it’s a really good big production by a very talented Director!
I hear that they are making it into a movie and it comes out this Christmas!
The movie is fantastic. Must see viewing!!!
The US was given the short end of the stick when it came to the lane assignments
That's Don Hume who first accepts the wreath after Bobby Moch the Jewish Coxswain is honored with a hand shake. Next the wreath goes to Joe Rantz...hero of Boys in the Boat. Joe lived to be over 90 years old and traveled the world with his wife and five children.
I'm wondering why Moch was even allowed to compete, given that he was Jewish. Two members of the American relay-race squad were not allowed to run because they were Jewish, and Jesse Owens filled in for one of them. He was not at all happy about that! I suppose the Nazis just didn't know about Moch. Neither did Moch himself, according to the book. His father informed him he was Jewish right before the team left for Europe.
Honestly one of my favorite things about the whole story was that a Jewish man was the coxswain for the gold-medal team during “Hitler’s Olympics”. Talk about sweet irony 🎉 !
My guess is that no one knew he was Jewish until it was all over with. I loved all those boys and felt like I knew them like old friends by the end of the book, but Bobby Moch is the one I would have most loved to shake hands with.
Good movie 🎬
Just watched the movie. AMAZINGGG
I am reading that story now
Extraordinaria la hazaña de nueve hombresen los jj.oo- de 1936
My US history class is forced to listen to our teacher read The Boys in the Boat.
The Greatest Sports Story Ever Told! I hear it will be a movie. Who will play Joe Rantz...who is tall enough?
Row2k news in April has a list if cast members. Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth plays Joe Rantz. "Harry Potter" Dan Radcliffe is coxswain. 5th and 6th seat are two former collegiate rowers- Michael DiSanto of Harvard and Rob Munn of Washington. (Go Dawgs!)
The actual documentary is on PBS American Experience. Over 5 years ago Weinstein Co locked up the movie rights based on DJ Brown's book which had yet to be written. Kenneth Branagh (Kings Speech) was said to be director.
Ahimsa, Weinstein, or is it Hollywood's version hasnt come out yet. It seems like it has taken Weinstein forever to get this movie produced. I saw the PBS doc tho. Dan Brown is interviewed several times in that. He is a very insightful and gifted writer.
my dad was in the german team, dark hair and glasses.
The boys in the boat 🇰🇪
Hey, does anybody know the song/composer for the music in the background?
POV: you just finished Boys in the Boat
Clooney did a good job making the movie from the book
anyone else having to watch that for school?? 🤔
Hey algorithm, there's a movie now so boost this.
What’s the song playing during the race?
Boys in the Boat should be required reading. There is a lot of historical significance of what our country went through and the grit that we used to have.
WHAT ARE THEIR NAMES !!!
Herbert Morris
Charles Day
Gordon Adam
John White
James McMillin
George Hunt
Joe Rantz
Donald Hume
Robert Moch
I'd say the German crew, ended up in the Warsaw Ghetto as guards.. It must hv been a shock to the Nazis..Great.😅
Trump wouldn't look so different standing next to Hitler.
