The Euro Sport announcer summed this all up so well. No, Roddick wasn't a perfect player or a perfect person. He raged too hard sometimes and he was pretty one-dimensional other than the few shining moments when his groundstrokes were really going well (Wimbledon 2012 for example). But the truth is that in most cases, Roddick was a class act. It's easy to focus on the negative things because those are the things that the media focuses on and that people remember, but Roddick was always respectful of his fellow players (Except for maybe the one incident of teasing Djokovic in '08), and even if he ever came across as disrespectful, it was sarcastic, dry humor.
The pressure on his shoulders was immense. He won the U.S. Open Boys title in 2000 and was crowned as the next American champion while Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi were in the twilights of their careers. Before Sampras and Agassi, there was Courier and McEnroe. Before them, there was Connors and Ashe. The American tradition of great champions all fell on his shoulders and, unfortunately, did so in the era or 2 or 3 of the greatest players of all time. I think it's safe to say that if Roger Federer had chosen to do something else with his life, or been born in a different decade, Roddick would have at least 2 Wimbledons, probably one more U.S. Open, and probably one Australian Open. That's some crazy pressure to have. He carried the American flag for tennis for about a decade. Sure, James Blake was a good player and Mardy Fish came and went sporadically, but in the end, it was always Andy who was the U.S.'s best, longshot hope for a Cinderella run. I think that American tennis fans have come to appreciate him even more now, with John Isner being our best chance. No disrespect to Isner, but he makes Roddick look like an all-court player. With Fed, Nadal, Djoker, Murray, DelPo, and even guys like Soderling and Ferrer outperforming him majors, it was easy to be disappointed with Roddick compared to Sampras and Agassi, but look at what American tennis (on the men's side of course) has now. We miss you, Andy.
On a side note, DelPo was such a class act in this match. He handled it with the grace and experience of a man 10 years his senior.

2 things: Roddick was far from one dimensional. There are tons of clay court players who are more one dimensional than he. 2. When you referenced his ground strikes, surely you were referring to Wimbledon 2009, the final against Federer, not 2012 as you did, where he went out in the 3rd round?! 🤔🤔

andy roddick=the man/player, who deserved more than 1 grand slam..although arod didn´t get another title, he gave 150% of himself in some of those finals, against federer, at wimbledon especially.

It was too early for him to retire. He lost against a great player not some so and so

+samyb786 Well he decided to retire at the final slam of the year which also so happens to be the only Slam he ever won. He made that decision before the slam. It wasn't just some spur of the moment decision.

Tennis at this level is as much about entertainment, as well as being a sport content.
      Andy was a great entertainer,
as well as being a good player. One of his gr8 quotes, was when talking about Serena Williams when they were playing juniors at about age 11.
I was this weedy little kid & she was already pushing up dump trucks.

He should have won at least one or two more slams... he's really unfortunate to play in the era with some of the greatest players in history... Roger, Rafa and Novak... and maybe Murray too...
I miss you Andy... you're always my Champion... and you're a real inspiration to many...
