    Can anyone direct me to a video geared toward people like me that have no idea what he is talking about? I mean a tutorial for someone that literally is a beginner at all of this. I'm sure this is an excellent video, I just can't seem to find one that explains everything as if you were looking at a foreign object for the first time. Thank you.

    On my newer UV-5R+ you don’t have to be in a particular band if you’re in Frequency Mode. You can just type in the frequency. However, on my original UV-5R, if you’re in Frequency Mode and try to enter a 70 cm frequency when the particular band is set to 2 meters, it won’t let you. You actually have to use the Band button to select the correct band before you can type in a frequency for that band.

    I recently got licensed and picked up a Yaesu VX-6. It's a nice radio but I wish I hadn't got it. I'm 20 miles from the nearest repeater and live in a hollow. There are some hams in town but apparently they don't monitor .52, I can't make a contact here to save my life. I did pick up one of Dr. Ed Fong's 2m antennas and mounted it on a 10' pole on my roof but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I've been told that this time of year the repeaters are pretty dead. Anyway..... having mounted an antenna and being tied to that I wish I had taken the money I spent on the VX-6 and bought a base or mobile with a lot more nuts. It would have been money better spent. That said, I like that I can take this HT camping and pick up a wide range of frequencies including weather and fm radio. Great video! Keep up the good work.

I've already taken my antenna off and on multiple times testing the stock antenna on my ft65r and a nagoya antenna I bought that made zero difference in recieve or transmit. I havnt noticed any degradation in signal strength when i put my stock antenna back on so thats good. Might try a diamond antenna eventually and see if that will give me a boost.

    Hi Josh, this was indeed another brilliant videos with loads of information.Thanks for the advice on the repeater groups snobbery. Just wanted to know that if DMR handheld radios are also capable of D-STAR? Can DMR allow private Simplex call? Why does a DMR requires a WiFi or hotpot? Is it possible to communicate in DMR with another DMR ham user in simplex mode where there are no DMR repeaters? What is the maximum distance a DMR handheld can cover in such situation? Is there some similarities between DMR and IP-Radio? Does DMR allows DXing in a cheap and efficient manner when compared to HF? Finally, I completely agree that the HF bands are the ultimate place of communication that crosses geography worldwide and does not have to depend on any kind of intermediary service provider such has the repeaters. HF definitely opens up altogether new horizon of communication particularly DXing and finding like minded people. Yes, HF is the arena for the big boys to play:) May I request you to please suggest a mid range (price) HF mode that does all bands including SSB. Really appreciate all your efforts in creating such great videos.
    Wish you a blessed day ahead.
    73s

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  Před 4 lety +1

      1. DMR cannot go D-STAR
      2. DMR Can do simplex calls
      3. DMR does not require a hotspot, but a hotspot allows you to talk on other modes (like D-STAR) and on any talk group you want.
      4. Maximum distance will be dependent on terrain and overgrowth. But assume 1-10 miles?
      5. DMR is not like IP radios. Other than both being digital, they are different
      6. DMR doesn’t really allow DXing, but you could get sporadic E. DMR is generally line of sight communication, so nothing really like HF.
      7. If you want to get into HF, you should get a 7300 to get started. It will do you well for years.

    Just bought a 1-40 channel uniden 340xL for $5 bucks at a yard sale it took a handful of AA batteries , but it fired up , so I'm watching this video and I'm more confused than a cow on Astro tuff ! My radio must have been made in the late 70's 🤔 it's like comparing a hand set phone to a IPhone 12 pro ! Looks way to complicated !

      With that radio, just power it on, select a frequency and talk. That is pretty much all it does.

    It just seems all too dang complicated. The whole licensing process also seems too complicated. CB is much easier, buy radio, put up and tune antenna and start talking. It really is that simple. No need to worry about breaking rules. No one cares what you do or say except those snobby HAM guys.
