I was going to purchase a new starter but after hours of research and looking online at pricey QUALITY replacement parts I decided to give this a try because the starters themselves mechanically are heavy duty and will likely outlast your vehicle unless you have electrical issues with it. After removing the starter (which you would have to do anyway to replace it) it took me about an hour as well with attention to cleaning all of the parts, removing dust and dirt from inside where the magnets are in the large cylinder as well as adding premium CAT grease to the gears. Started up with zero embarrassment several times. Thanks for posting this, helped with my MK4 Jetta! Cheers.
Lovely guide. Opened up the starter on my '78 Honda CX500 and it was black with grime and carbon buildup. Positive contact was grounding with case. Hopefully a good cleaning does the trick.
@@sirobb Starter spins. Spend $60 on a replacement before finding your video. Should have just gone with my gut from the start. Next, pulling flywheel cover off. I put penetrating oil on the heads last night. Lots of carbon buildup on them from the plug hole. Hopefully I can rotate it.
Gut feelings are 99% of success so don't beat yourself up over the 1% lack of faith in yourself. Some only achieve 50% correct so you're well in the zone which says you'll progress fine. Please inform your viewers about the dangers of electrical contact cleaners, as most of these products are carcinogenic. new brush set and brush holder here in sweden for my 2.1kw Valeo (renault master) is 20 quid for the brushes, and 30 for the holder, all in all 50 quid!
Did you guys soak the planetary gears in diesel? They have internal bearings. Also the aluminum "base" of the starter has a little internal bearing. I wonder about the impact of diesel on these bearings... Thanks
Thanks for the video. It gives me more understanding of Bosch starter for my 1999-2006 BMW 3 Series. This starter is exact design (model 0-001-108-157) for my car, which starting to intermittently fail at about 10 yr old. The bendix (flywheel) gear was the failing part, which you mention it is very solid and won't fail. The clutch starting to slide and not locking intermittently. I wish you cover how to remove the bendix gear so that I can replace it for $30-$40. At the end, I get a used starter for < $50, which is less perfect, while a better used unit cost $100 at my area.
The problem i have is that the solenoid still throws the gear forwards but it is supposed to push down a button at the same time which connects the power to the motor itself. This is where the motor should now get +12V and start to spin. I thought about putting a spot of weld between the two points so that the contact comes in a few mm earlier. I can get the contact (relay switch) to close if i push it down with a rod or if i really try hard to force the forward action of throw for the small gear to it's extreme limit. However i am unable to separate the inner part of the solenoid (that gets pulled inwards when power is applied) from the black plastic lever and pivot point. I would ideally want to separate this part to either spot weld it or to replace the entire solenoid. It looks like there are 3x tabs up inside this piece. Perhaps if i flatten the tabs down i may be able to remove the core of the piece but the tolerance looks so tight that i doubt it will slide apart. One thing i found strange was that the solenoid won't pull the middle cylinder in until i bolt the solenoid back to the motor. But i'm wondering why that sould effect anything if the motor is not in circuit anyway due to the switch not making contact. I get 0,4V across the contact from -v to the main motor connector once i apply power to the main +12v hot bolt and the small tab to activate the solenoid. It should be 12V once the big electrical switch (relay points) get brought together by the pulling down of the inner part which normally also activates the button right at the deepest point of the solenoid.
krysieks I bought the brush pack from a Latvian seller on eBay. I wanted genuine Bosch and was in no rush. With the right tools and if everything goes to plan, probably yes but I never set myself a time limit for any job. Doing the job correctly first time is always more important than doing a job quickly.
Or you could have made part 1 in the light and there would be no complaint,just a thought for somebody trying to make videos review the video and check the lighting of it before you post it. I'm just saying if I was going to post the video over probably review it before I posted it just to check it and make sure it looks great beforehand! 😮👍

That would be no thought that would never cross my mind as to see if you had more videos. So, you used a diesel bath to clean the parts. That's diesel fuel and not diesel oil, right? Can I just use brake cleaner or will that do any damage?
