🍡 I’d like to turn this into something you’d enjoy eating! What should I do with the other stick?
Agar comes in a powder form too 😎💕
I watched another video, they made it into candy if I remember it correctly by mixing it with flavoured drink + sugar and then dried.
TURN IT INTO A GIANT CUBE OF WATER 😂😂😂
And Use More Water
You should have added Pandan leaf extract for flavour and a little bit of sugar. Or.. same thing as the one I suggested but add coconut milk (santan), but add the coconut milk after the agar agar dissolve/liquid but do not stir as much after you added the coconut milk. You'll get a layered texture. But my agar agar is powdered. Really hope you can try it and let us see how did it turn out.
You can make a variation of Nariyal ka Agar Pudding or Coconut Agar Pudding. You can add flavors like mango, saffron, rose water, or crushed cardamom seeds and layer different flavors by pouring them in alternating layers and allowing each layer to set before adding the next one.
My mom prefers getting these in white and red, so they'd turn pink. She also adds sugar evaporated milk, and pineapple tidbits, and she makes them every Christmas.
That sounds so good. I will have to try this. :D
Dang that sounds so good
My nanay makes almost the same exact thing! It's a core childhood Christmas memory.
The cathedral dessert yum!
Ngl that sounds delicious
agar-agar is also vegan! so it's a great gelatin alternative, but it does have a different texture that can be too snappy
You just have to dose it right! In Asia Stores there is powder, so it's easier
@@pinkustrawberry83Its great in cakes/creme desserts thats usually call for gelatin.
@@LDinoiseyeah I've seen it in powder form here in Scotland, but never in those sticks. I must say, the sticks look cooler lol
I think it tastes better than gelatin imo
@@pinkustrawberry83 I've had vegan gummy bears and gummy worms they're softer than the gelatin based one but still have a nice chewey texture
Fun fact agar agar is the gel that they use to fill petri dishes and it's great for growing micro organisms
I was just about to say this about cultivating 🍄 🍄
Funny thing is I first learnt about agar agar in mircobiology because you use it in culture mediums. I was so weirded out when I saw it in recipes
Yeah, me too. I can't bring myself to trying it because of it.
I mean if bacteria likes it why wouldn’t we 🙃
Bacteria often eat the same things we do :)
That would be a cool halloweenish desert to make a fake mouldy Petrie dish of flavoured agar
It was the other way around for me. I kept on wanting to add condensed milk and evap milk to it and take a bite (sans bacterial growth of course). 😭
My love here is my suggestion: Maybe we can add more water, sugar and flavors for better consistency.
How I grew up eating is: get the colorless one then soak and boil it in water then add it to hot boil milk with sugar (flavored milk like strawberry, tender coconut, mango) you can just add some fruit jam or purée. Would taste great. With jiggly texture
or just let her do what she wants and stop telling her to make it differently or thst she's 'doing it wrong'
She said "I grew up watching my mom made desserts with this." and "Here, I'm just showing you how to transform this into something edible but you can add all sorts of stuff to it to make it taste better."
So she does know that you need to add other things to it since it's an ingredient for desserts that she grew up with. The video is just showing you how to turn it into said ingredient.
@@just-a-bird.or maybe you could just watch the video again to understand that she has asked for suggestions to what to make with the other half. You got no chill😂
@@Blue.sky156 I am chill what do you mean? also I do get thst she asked for suggestions it's just the way you said it sounded like you where saying she's doing it wrong and doesn't know how to do it
@@just-a-bird. ooh! I can edit my comment and make it sound better❤️ ty for letting me know🫶🏻
In indonesia agar is more common than gelatine. I didnt know that there's something called gelatine until I was an adult and traveled outside Indonesia. We made pudding and sauce and jelly with it, and if you use agar powder there will be no crumbly consistency, it's silky smooth and very jelly-like.
Well, indonesia is majority Muslim. Not surprising you dont have gelatin, as the best source of gelatin is pig.
Indonesia is predominantly Muslim. They probably don’t look to fondly at rendered pork fat for desserts.
@@eversnajera yes I know, I'm indonesian lol.
@@eversnajera Except gelatine is from beef?
Aw man we love agar jelly! It's a perfect vegetarian alt to geletine, and makes for a nice fruity snack when flavoured nicely
Yes it’s much better to just let the animal bones go to waste instead of eating them
@@nothanks9503 actually animal bones can be used in many other ways! Jewellery is one I see often, as well as plant fertilizer. As a vegetarian, I love agar, but you best believe my fertilizers are exclusively blood and bone :D
@@justaperson4656 food is life life is more valuable then jewelry
@@nothanks9503 good for you, but gelatine doesn't actually involve eating the bones. It's more akin to bone broth.
Animals are animals. If it's dead, it's dead. Doesn't really matter what the use is as long as you can find a use. I'm a bit concerned if all you see in an animal are its bones. Do you eat seagull bones too?
@@nothanks9503 one word, stock.
Add to coconut milk and tapioca pearls will make a delicious desert. 😋😋😋
haha this has all the classic south east asian dessert flavors!
This! And pieces of fruits too
I boil it in coconut water with some plain sugar, cool, and cut into cubes - these then form part of the buko pandan dessert!
Agar agar is great, vegan gelatin option for all those out there not wanting cartilage for dessert, I used to boil it then when its colling you put in in juice or with some mint syrup so it makes delicious treats without adding too much sugar.
I’m not sure why Asian countries have so many incredibly stupid and pointless dishes but then again, starvation was, and still I’d a big thing in almost every Asian country.
I love those with evaporated milk and sugar then add either pineapple tidbits or fruit cocktail in the container before it sets
Looks so cool, never seen it in green.
i'm familiar with agar agar but i never saw it in those sticks before! i'm used to it in its powder form. that's so neat
We also have agar agar in Indonesia, but ours is in powder 😂
My mom usually cook it with sugar and coconut milk, It will taste sweeter and tastier
in Indonesia we have product name is nutrijel, But it's in powder form and cooked with water usually made into a sweet drink we call "es buah".
Noooo it’s also agar-agar , nutrijel is a brand and they’re premixed with other ingredients and they’re more jelly and soft texture wise, pure agar2 is the yellow brand that has a bird logo
@@Wannayeet oh that's right, i forgot it 😂
Another form of agar² is powder. My mom loves to make agar² and she always use the powder one.
I want to visit Philippines at least once in my life, they are so diverse and mystic in terms of flavors
Ahh yeah.. That is gelatin derives from seaweed. Japan origin. 😅
@@adminsucks8806This is gulaman, it comes from Philippines not Japan, you might've mistaken this for something else.
@@lazypotato3707 agar was discovered by Minoya Tarozaemon in Japan during the mid 1600s after he frozen noodles made from agarophytes (tokoroten).
Yeah, we used to make dessert out of it. "Gelatine" as we call it. We used to dissolved it in hot water pour some evap and condense milk and sugar. Bring it to boil. Then, in a llanera, put some tapioca and fruit of your choice (pineapple) and pour the mixture. Then, add grated cheese on top and chilled 😊 yum
Try the Vietnamese version of this dessert! It’s just like jello
In here, we have them in powder shape, and they have colours like transparent, red, etc.
cook this the same but with the ube extract, and see people go nuts...
lol i remember my mom made this during pandemic and coz i cant go out i'd add this to my iced coffee to make coffee jelly 😂
Oh that sounds cool!!! Do you remember the recipe?
@@caffienatedtactician My relatives have done this before. You could just mix instant coffee powder into the agar-agar solution then boil it and let it solidify. You'll get coffee-flavoured jelly.
I thought this and gelatin are one and the same. We both call them gulaman. 😅
My mom mainly calls it China grass. She makes this during Ramadan for my dad, who puts it rooh afza (syrup made from rose syrup)😊
I used agar agar to make vegan cheese cake, here's my recipe
2 (8oz) containers vegan cream cheese
1 cup Monkfruit sweetener
1 Tablespoon Vanilla
Dissolve:
2 Tablespoons of Agar agar powder
2 Tablespoons coconut milk
Microwave for 3 minutes pour it to your cream cheese mixture
And pour that cheesecake mixture over any cookie crust you like, refrigerator for 1 hour 😁 Enjoy!!
would any other milk besides coconut work? thanks for the recipe!
I'm Indonesian and we usually found agar-agar in the shape of powder in the supermarket instead of the crumbly thing like you have. And agar-agar is a more common thing to be used in Indonesia compared to gelatine.
With the agar agar mix with sugar and let dry for 3 days or 8 hours in the oven the outside will be crunchy and the inside soft
Man i love how the comment section is all so respectful, peaceful, happy, and like super friendly.
It's a plant (seaweed) based jelly. The firmness depends on the how much water is use in the mix.
For those who don't know, agar agar is like gelatin just it's made with seaweed instead of bones.
I miss this. Even though I'm in the Philippines, Agar isn't sold anymore near me in Batangas which was so common when I was a kid until around early 2010s. The stores and supermarket removed it and replaced it with different types of mr. Gulaman sold in sachets because its easier and faster to cook. But honestly I prefer real Gelatin though expensive or Agar because of the consistency/texture when firm. Mr. Gulaman after a day leaks water or soft even if less water is added. While Gelo and Agar are Firm which is perfect for broken glass/cathedral window dessert which color doesn't leak and separate when milk or white is added. Usually with mr. Gulaman when mixed to make broken glass, it leaks which makes the color murky with the mixed colors.
It's also really cheap! You can also get it as a powder that you can dissolve and boil in the same way. Add sugar and (if you have the ones that aren't precolored) you can add food coloring.
The word "agar" comes from agar-agar, the Malay name for red algae (Gigartina, Eucheuma,[8] Gracilaria) from which the jelly is produced
Mix half with coconut milk and the other half with coconut water, pour them into a bowl in layers... Cooling each layer in between..... Add sugar depending on how sweet you want it
You did great to describe the difference between jello and agar, I appreciate it
For those wondering, agar is a red algae (seaweed) product
Agar is also what's used in the bottom of petri dishes as a substrate. It's made from red algae.
I use agar agar to make casting molds! You can cut up the mold and remelt the agar chunks to make a different one after casting, it’s very versatile. You just have to be careful not to reuse the agar for too long cause it can grow bacteria over time.
Agar agar is widely used in the culinary world, both as a vegan alternative to gelatine but is also priced for it's properties to produce a heat restistent gel up to around 45 degrees celcius. This is achieved by making your agar agar gel with whichever flavouring you want, and then blending it until completely smooth, thus negating the crumbling texture as well. Afterwards you can bag or squeze bottle it for service
Sparkling apple cider + strawberries + agar is great
Coffee jelly is great
Grass jelly is great (mesona iirc)
Almond milk + agar w/ cut/sliced strawberries
Lastly… Green tea boba 💯
Agar agar in powdered form is very common in fine dining restaurants. Specifically its one of the most common gel agents to make fluid-gels with, or it can also be used to make caviar-like spheres of any liquid (Spherification) It has slightly different properties than gelatin which makes it great for those applications
Good tactile description 😊
Add sugar, lemon juice, almond extract, vanilla extract and oat or almond milk in a 1/4 ratio for something creamy and amazing.
agar is basically a vegan version of gelatin. it comes from algae rather than animal collagen. we use it in the lab to make growth mediums for bacteria called agar plates. there's also agar deeps and slants but those are for more specific tests
I put agar agar powder into a melted chocolate mixed with milk and cocoa powder to make a chocolate pudding. It becomes so creamy and soft and delicious!
U have to add sugar to it and boil it until it dissolved. U can put sago and the agar2 into a cup and add coconut milk with a pinch of salt,or u can add sugar to the coconut milk or just any milk u prefer. It's delicious. Try it
I have Indonesian friends, they have this as well, but it was lighter green and there was a white layer. It was good !
I've made coffee jelly with these before! (instant coffee, sugar, and maybe a touch of red food dye if you get the green ones to neutralize the colors. boil, then pour into any pan or jello mold you like. I put mine in clear teacups I thrifted because I thought it would be cute. I was correct. Then just top with whipped cream)
agar agar is basicly gellitin but like more powerfull so one table spoon of agar powder is like 6 tablespoons of geliton, and i would recomend making crystal jellys
Agar agar is also used in mushroom cultivation as a growth medium, I use it for cloning and starting Oysters, reishi, etc.
It should either have sugar and/or milk. Or condensed milk to give it flavor and makes it softer though. Then it should also be strained before letting it set.
If you want to experiment, you can change the texture to be a bit spongy?foamy? by mixing it with egg whites!
Soft boil the agar with milk and sugar, you can also add other flavours here.
On another bowl whisk some egg whites until its start foaming (stop until just before you reach a soft peak)
Slowly fold the warm agar mixture in, and let it cool
My grandma used to pour it into a mold and layered a vanilla flavoured spongy-foamy agar as the base with a regular clear agar with cut up fruits in it, and it created fun and different textures!
I love agar since it doesn't contain gelatin, so it's perfect for anyone vegetarian/vegan! I also had a friend who was Muslim who couldn't have gelatin because it's actually made with the bones of animals, and it's not listed where it's from a cow or pig (therefore they were unsure if something containing gelatin was halal or not)
Very popular in Japan. Good diet food. Like no calories
If u add more water or milk and mix with sugar it tastes way better and texture is like gelatin
Ohhh! My mom makes coconut pudding with these! So she cooks tender coconut pulp+ coconut milk+ condensed milk till it’s thick. Then she double boils the agar agar so it melts and then adds to the coconut mixture. And set in the refrigerator! You can too it off with some nice candy nuts and it’s my FAVOURITE DESSERT ever!
Agar agar also called GULAMAN, it comes in bar with different colors like red green & yellow.
In Malaysia, we add sugar to it. So, agar-agar will be more sweet. Some state in Malaysia dried the agar-agar under sunlight, then after it dried, agar-agar will solidified at the outside (not too hard just like a candy) and we eat it as a sweets or candy. I really enjoy eat the dried version because it's crunchy at the outside and soft at the inside with a sweet taste. I'm not sure how other southeast Asia country eat it but that's how we eat it in Malaysia (the watery one and the dried one).😊
My childhood ❤❤❤ We usually cook it with milk, sugar, and eggs.. somewhat similar to a panna cotta. Delicious 😋
Pour it into petri dishes and use them to grow bacterial samples. That is what they use to make petri dishes solid, agar. It's green because it's literally processed seaweed, or nori.
Called gulaman or agar-agar (dried seaweed). Yes, that's how we use for gulaman drink when we were kids and Gelatin desserts refrigerated to solidify. So good.
We add condensed milk and coconut milk. Also, try tang pineapple juice powder or any brand and coconut milk and sugar
We strain the agar2x to separate the weird texture like sand. Then put sugar or condensed milk.. or put it on buko pandan salad, fruit salad, macaroni etc.
Great diet hack for me! Agar2 for snacks. It has very little calories, just eat when I feel like snacking. Obviously I added sugar until I like the sweetness but not adding much calories.
Add sugar and pandan flavor. Add cubes of ripe mango. Add cream and some condensed milk. You can also use fresh young coconut meat instead of the mangoes and coconut cream for the dairy. Chill and serve.
I grew up knowing it as gulaman.
I like making coconut jello with agar agar. You just need a can of coconut cream, sugar to taste, and a pinch of salt. I like adding jackfruit bits.
Try mixing in fruit cocktail OR cooked taro root cooked in coconut milk till tender- NOT MUSHY. And add sugar to taste.
Stir it in with dissolved agar-agar
OR once agar-agar is dissolved- stir in a beaten egg and stir slowly to create ribbons of egg- dont mix it to make it look creamy..let it set
As a person who doesn't eat gelatin this is a great alternative, but it does matter how you cook it. If you cook it a certain way it could have the same texture as gelatin. Personally I've never tried gelatin but it gives a really nice "Jello" like texture and is not crumbly like how you explained in the video. And the people I know who eat gelatin say it's really similar.
You can buy agar agar in a powder form that is white to clear in color. It is used to make raindrop cakes.
put in some coconut milk and condense milk 😍😍 and the more liquid you have, the less it falls apart when bite but more of the firm jello texture. If you want, you can combine both agar agar with gelatine to your prefer texture
Malaysia call it agar-agar too..
Our agar2 are white..
We always add it with sugar and red rose flavour..
And we also can add milk, sugar and bread and colourful food colouring...
❤❤❤❤
I know agar from my work place in the lab where we use it to cultivate bacteria! XD it’s like a plant based gelatin I think made from some kind of algae? It’s used in micro biology because it has a higher melting point than gelatin which would get way to soft when incubated at body temperature or higher and since we incubate the Petri dishes upside down, it would just melt and slump into the lid. But agar is also a popular vegan substitute for gelatin.
I used a white agar and hydrated it with sweetened coffee. Refreshing dessert.
if I'm remembering correctly, (i might not be) basically jello is protein and agar is a carbohydrate
In Asian supermarkets in the US they have this but from the Thai brand Telephone. It's a white powder instead, but still agar agar. We make pandan and coconut jellies with it
Put pandan leaves + sugar when u r boiling the agar agar. It's yummy and fragrant. 😋
- Add pandan flavor and mix with to caramel drink or "samalamig".
- Add pandan flavor mix with Halo-halo
Use it like gelatin, layered flan etc.
We in India make a sweet out of it.. Just boil some milk n add evaporated milk with sugar as per ur liking, after a gud boiling of everything add agar agar n boil again for 5-10 min n transfer to a sheet pan n let it cool.. Ur sweet is ready.. It's quite tasty u should try
I first learned about agar agar in school where it's used with potato starch to make potato jelly
And that potato jelly it's used to culture microbes in the bio lab
It was a fun experiment
It's cool that it's a vegetarian alternative to gelatin as well 😀
My grandma used to make these, and she usually mix them with syrups for flavoring. My favorite one is agar with nutmeg syrup
I’ve never seen it in a green stick I use white agar powder that turns clear, to me it’s a better texture than gelatin and it’s good for making syrups if you don’t want to boil them very long.
Agar is a disaccharide I’m pretty sure. It’s used in laboratory research to make gels. Usually you’ll microwave agar combined with a buffer, then pour it into a mold for it to harder. Bacteria use it as a growing media and I’ve used it for electrophoresis
I learned about agar agar so long ago and needed it for a recipe. I couldn't find it anywhere. I don't know if I could find even today. I've always wondered about it so thank you for this short.
My mom would make the agar jelly (clear) and cut it into cubes and put lime and sugar. Simple refreshing snack for the summer.
Agar is delicious, the texture is better than gelatin imo. I used to make a layered version with coffee and milk flavors, but I buy it in an uncolored powder form.
We used to use purified agar agar powder to make the petri dishes for growing bacteria colonies.
Agar gel is also incredibly important for scientific research as it’s able to filter out dna segments based on size in a process called gel electrophoresis with almost the exact same materials as the agar agar here
My Grandma used to make fruit jellies with this when we were little. She would mix it with fruit juice then put some berries or slices of fruit in the bottom of the ramekins. My brother and I always loved them
Aagar powder is really nice since it can solve in cold liquids unlike gelatine
You can also get it in powder form here in the US. Surprisingly it makes a really good starter for a lot of plants
Can you explain to me how agar can be used as a starter for plants?
@@dasja9966 Sorry for the kinda lazy response, I didn’t want to try to put all that into my own words it’s early in the morning where I am lol and I’m still waking up.
@@lililive1092 no worries, fair enough. Gonna try google, i'm kinda curious about the agar thing now.

Dried agar-agar bars. These are first soaked in either cold or tap water before cooking.
Ive seen so many people make jelly tarts with Agar on shorts, man i want some.
As green as this stuff is I'd probably mix in some woodruff syrup for taste keeping it green ^^ (Woodruff or "Waldmeister" in german is a plant that gets used in a lot of desserts here in Germany. Looks a bit like mint and tastes... a bit like lemon/lime i guess. Hard to describe as it really is unique)
in india it's called China grass and we boil it with milk and sugar then freeze it...tastes heavenly.
You can make easy chocolate mousse with agar agar use dark unsweetened chocolate & condensed milk I think that’s it or maybe one ingredient more but that’s it. You need very little agar agar to get the mousse consistency
My grandma would make desserts with agar-agar and pandan, absolutely delicious! My family is from Indonesia.
Agar agar. "Haluvidha" in my language. We cook with either water and condensed milk or water, coconut milk and sugar.
Mixing in tajin and lime juice when it cools down before you chill it makes really savory treats 😁
usually not green. we add coconut cream and sugar to it before letting it set and cook in the fridge.
