People!! You don't get this video. It's a fish feeder that's designed to keep the crabs away and the fish can eat in peace. Works pretty good, wouldn't you say so?
After some crabbing experience of my own, I have found that it's better to have the bait box attached to the floor of the cage. As your video shows, many of the crab tried to climb up the cage instead of staying low and to the ground.
I've been wanting to see this on Deadliest catch, forever! I have always wondered why they don't let cameras down to see where the crab biomass is. So many flounder!
Discovery's "disposable" cameras cost ten grand :-( I'd think the fishing fleet would use something like that to scout the bottom before dropping pots.
I have the same trap and regularly catch my limit of 5 or more, which I throw back. This trap has the rubber bands in place that it comes with new to keep the door from flapping around, which is why the crabs can't get in. If you remove those, you'd catch all those crabs.
Reminds me of the "Walking Dead". Crabs, are not too bright! I think you got to change your entry-way. Great way to learn what's going on with crab behavior. You got me, I watched the entire 15 minutes.
The crab is so funny, walks up FOOD!!! then slams in to the cage and is like what the frick is this! reachs in with claw *so close yet so far away!* then the fish is like hah ima sit in my new house where crabs cant get meh! i also love how the fish have a party in there eating the chicken saying sucks to be you!
You need another type-pot, like a 4-door round commercial crab pot or buy some doors and cut some wire-mesh bars to make your entrance into the pot alot wider and more crab will get in.
Thats like the most common crab pot we got over here and its pretty effective we usually catch our limit in about 2 hours and our limit is about 30 crabs
Damn, nice size crabs & several of them & not 1 in the trap. Seeing the clip, I reckon if ya tied a bit of plastic mesh (like you buy to grow vines on or a bit of wire mesh with smaller holes as used on chicken coops or a rabbit hutch, even a bit of fly wire) onto the trap door with cable ties, it would be easier for the crabs to push the trap door open & get in quicker rather then trying to get in each opening without success! Nothing to loose and a nice feed of crab to gain... :)
Oh my God! I'm about to have an anxiety attack! It's so frustrating to see them try to get in. Now I understand why sometimes I pull out empty pots. I thought it'd be easier for the crabs to get inside.
Its the door, people always fuck it up with the door. The door needs to be two flat panels or tightly woven metal on top of each other with the bottom panel being able to bend in towards the bait but not out. This makes it easier for them to get in, and securely close around them so others cant use the ones coming in opening the door effectively to their advantage.
10:04 LOLOL There like CUZ I FOUND THE WAY IN, NO RLLY? YA MAN (all rush to same spot and smash middle crab) 10:26 his like Cuz where yall at HELP IM LOCKED UP HELPPPPPP LOVE HOW HE GETS STUCK TOO we need peter griffin to start sing *Spidercrab*
I saw this video and it makes me bang my head against my desk. At what point do you realize you will catch more crabs if you can build a trap that a crab can actually get in?
Crabs follow other crabs. Maybe they are freaked out by those zip ties sticking out at them. It is not the design of this trap, that is for sure. Check out all the other videos using this same trap design. Maybe putting the bait cage on the bottom would keep them low and then through the doors they would go.
its chicken legs, not sure how you couldnt tell that it was a drumstick right there in the front. You can literally tie a Chicken Neck onto a string and throw it out into the water where you know there are crabs, and then wait about 3-5 minutes and slowly, slowly, slowwwwly pull the line in. Seriously its gotta be really slow, and have a net ready at the dock. Have the net in the water and slowly pull the line toward the net and be ready to scoop it. Theyre so busy eating they wont let go
Your bait box might be alittle high, but i would go to a round pot smaller version of the 100lb. commerical ones i use now but then again you need a pot puller for those
Are you kidding me? All that and you didn't catch 1 of them? There were like 6 or 7 crabs running around that trap, but they couldn't go in, while those little fishes laughed at them. You should make the door more taller and a see through glass or plastic fame re-enforcing the door only, so that their legs don't get stuck trying to open the door.
so you had about 5 crabs viciously trying to get into your trap but you didnt catch a single one? what good is that?? the old fashioned traps that hit the floor and unfold are better than this thing that you probably spent 3 times the money on. thats pretty nuts that not a single one was able to make its way in. Im sure soaking it for 4-6 hours would produce some crabs inside just because they'd lose so much weight from all that effort trying to get in, that eventually they'd fit thru the hole!
Nothing wrong with this pot, the bait box is too high on the pot. I have a few of these same pots and i always get some keepers anytime i use them. Sorry i fault the crabber not the pot.
Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Are you kidding me?? I have a similar pot and I haven't caught anything either! I just got the pot during the summer and have only been able to crab twice. Only caught 1 small female and 3 small males. I am thinking the door are not big enough for the right sized crabs to get in. It is my first time crabbing and bought my pot at Wal-Mart. Any advice from better crabbers than I.... or the guy who made this video!? lol
MrGreenman499... Thanks for your advice! I totally agree. Originally being from the Midwest, I had no prior knowledge of ocean fishing, crabbing, etc. I have only been in the Pacific NW for just under a year and really have learned a lot from people that I talk to, and watching some CZcams videos. It just takes time to turn a prairie girl into a good crabber! I appreciate any input!
maybe thats why door traps never work, crabs are too stupid. If you put like a piece of plastic or metal on the door so the crabs have a surface to push on rather than a hole stick their legs and claws through might work better.
Don't crab in Puget sound, spend the extra time going up to the islands or to the coast. Puget sound is so polluted they're dumping raw sewage into it because they can't treat all the waste because there's so many people in Seattle these days the sewage plants can't keep up so they just dump raw sewage into Puget sound.
im up in Vancouver BC .. I just go to a butcher store they usually have the left over bones with some chicken meat on them. and just give them to me. Or you can by a huge bag in Food Stores of chicken bones that are used for soup for a buck ..I use them for the bait . lots of blood still and cheaper
Dont know who was more frustrated, me or the crab lol
Legend has it, they're still trying to get in
People!! You don't get this video.

PETA will recommend your trap.
This video is a good advertisement for ring style crab pots.
After some crabbing experience of my own, I have found that it's better to have the bait box attached to the floor of the cage. As your video shows, many of the crab tried to climb up the cage instead of staying low and to the ground.
at 10:09 every body was like yes YES!!!!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
I've been wanting to see this on Deadliest catch, forever! I have always wondered why they don't let cameras down to see where the crab biomass is.
So many flounder!
I doubt that the cameras can survive being under water for an extended period of time.
Discovery's "disposable" cameras cost ten grand :-( I'd think the fishing fleet would use something like that to scout the bottom before dropping pots.

Very cool... except for removing the bands. Doh!
I admire the crabs' persistence and found myself rooting for them to succeed. Of course their success is actually a pretty big failure in disguise:)
Whichever crab that can go into your trap should get a gold medal.
Reminds me of the "Walking Dead". Crabs, are not too bright! I think you got to change your entry-way. Great way to learn what's going on with crab behavior. You got me, I watched the entire 15 minutes.

Ah, the good ol' Crab Tease 2000 pot.
I'm amazed with this crabs potential to continue trying to enter
that's one hungry mammajamma!! I'm surprised that the crabs didn't grab a fish swimmin by.
nice bait guard. really keeps them crabs off of it
They're more convenient to carry on a small boat but you can sure see why a 'tunnel' trap works better than a Danielson.
Wow, great crab pot. Maybe if the crabs could get into the trap you might have something to eat for tea!
I bet you will never leave bands on the doors again. 😂. I just subscribed and liked.
This is a cool view of what goes in underwater.
Damn, nice size crabs & several of them & not 1 in the trap. Seeing the clip, I reckon if ya tied a bit of plastic mesh (like you buy to grow vines on or a bit of wire mesh with smaller holes as used on chicken coops or a rabbit hutch, even a bit of fly wire) onto the trap door with cable ties, it would be easier for the crabs to push the trap door open & get in quicker rather then trying to get in each opening without success! crabs behave exactly like zombies. when the zombie apocalypse comes, i'm hiding in a big crab pot. they'll never get me.
LOL sideler that was hilarious!
@ 3:30 I was like... we got a customer!
Do you really expect the crabs to know how walk through a door?
yes
Just the smart ones.
The crabs need a lite, easily pushed entrance on a spring...Easy entrance, impossible to leave.."for a crab"
Oh my God! I'm about to have an anxiety attack! It's so frustrating to see them try to get in. Now I understand why sometimes I pull out empty pots. I thought it'd be easier for the crabs to get inside.

The frustration was palpable.
Hmm, this doesn't appear to be a terribly good design. Fish are having a feast, while the crabs can't find their way in.
Crab trap fail
Reminds me of the of the movie finding Nemo. Great ideal to see if the trap is working.
HAHA the crabs are like zombies
Awesome Video. The Fish had a good meal.
Thank you. I will be uploading the other half of the video tonight
Cool video, makes us all want to go catch crab. Great idea to put a camera in there. Wow. Really neat.
Now I know why I never get anything when I use my steel cage...gonna stick to casting traps. ...cool vid though.
Those fishes were enjoying the bait
Cool video... and since I do underwater video I really like it. Did you get a chance to upload the other half of the video?
I think the crabs need iq test too
I saw this video and it makes me bang my head against my desk.
At what point do you realize you will catch more crabs if you can build a trap that a crab can actually get in?
Lmao the crabs are like let us in bitch
Haha lol they can't get in,BUT THE FISH ARE HAVING A BLAST
nice vid!. I use the same pots and now I know how to improve the gates.....
I think the crabs wants the chicken or fish not sure lol wow that would be a great catch huh maybe away to get in easier but not get out? lol
Wow, 15min soak and not a single legal crab could get in the pot, time to redesign the pots man.
Ohh my gosh that was so fun to watch lol I'm new to crabbing so I'm still figuring things out about it haha

fish like: See ya suckers!
you'd probably catch more crabs if they could actually get in the trap.
For somereason this is really trippy
Is this where I make the joke about my buddy catching crabs????
This crab trap sucks i would never buy it
it's only 15 minutes, they just continue to try until they find the door after an hour or two
Your bait box might be alittle high, but i would go to a round pot smaller version of the 100lb. commerical ones i use now but then again you need a pot puller for those

Off of Jetti island.. Can't wait for open season!!! I will be doing more filming again.
try something like a lobster trap they work real well for catching crab as well.
My guess is that Crap Pot company went out of business hahaha
We got some dumb crabs here in the Sound, that's why I got rid of my box pots after my first season.
Trap is too smart.
Are You Trying To Catch Small Ones ? To get a Fine ?
so you had about 5 crabs viciously trying to get into your trap but you didnt catch a single one? what good is that?? the old fashioned traps that hit the floor and unfold are better than this thing that you probably spent 3 times the money on. thats pretty nuts that not a single one was able to make its way in. Im sure soaking it for 4-6 hours would produce some crabs inside just because they'd lose so much weight from all that effort trying to get in, that eventually they'd fit thru the hole!
You should try a Chesapeake style commercial trap
Nothing wrong with this pot, the bait box is too high on the pot. I have a few of these same pots and i always get some keepers anytime i use them. Sorry i fault the crabber not the pot.
The door is too small. The crabs can't fit in it.
I know they were trying to get into their certain death but I couldn't help but start rotting for them!
About 40'. Going to go crabbing very soon. I going to use 2 gopro cameras and new pots!!!
Put some chicken wire on the doors so when they push against it they open instead of their arms going through.
Traps work better when the prey can actually get inside them. Now you know.......
well the camera worked. at least you know you cant catch crabs in that pot.
the crab trap is too effective, in almost 15 mins no crabs got in, is there an easier way for the crabs to go in but not get out?
perhaps some 1/4 inch hardware cloth over the door. . claws push open and not through.
not nearly as the person who built the trap that keeps them out. What about all those ppl that bought one?
the fish got in!
good video, I'm putting the bait on the bottom of the trap
they should modify the trap. remove the bottom bar of the trapdoor, also make more trapdoors.
Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Are you kidding me?? I have a similar pot and I haven't caught anything either! I just got the pot during the summer and have only been able to crab twice. Any advice from better crabbers than I.... or the guy who made this video!? lol
dont buy your chinese made pot at walmart for 1. 2 take cutters and expand the door.
Frustrating for the crabs and the fisherman whos pulls up an empty trap
the iq of that cage is too damn high
what type of bait is that?
Holy Crap!!! what a Sh**ty crab pot...
time for a replacement
maybe thats why door traps never work, crabs are too stupid. If you put like a piece of plastic or metal on the door so the crabs have a surface to push on rather than a hole stick their legs and claws through might work better.

bad trap designer
I don't get it: Why is he feeding the fish?
did you catch any?
Hmm, set out 10 or so crab traps in a line and go flounder fishing.
Is something wrong with your pot
im up in Vancouver BC .. I just go to a butcher store they usually have the left over bones with some chicken meat on them. and just give them to me. Or you can by a huge bag in Food Stores of chicken bones that are used for soup for a buck ..I use them for the bait .
lots of blood still and cheaper
A flounder swims by at 7:50
where are the excluders?
What did u use for bait?
thats not a trap, it's a keeper outer
How deep was your pot set at?
Lots of flounder
What marine area is this?
