  • Noise-cancelling headphones have become pretty popular over the last decade or so - here's how they work. The concept actually dates back to 1978 when Dr. Amar Bose, an MIT professor, created the idea on a flight he was on.

    • @Jaur-jaur
      @Jaur-jaur Před 5 lety +271

      The term “passive noise cancelling” seems to me to have fallen out of favor and been replaced by “noise isolation”. The packaging on headphones sold today reflects this change, at least in the US

    • @MrJames_1
      @MrJames_1 Před 5 lety +106

      @@Jaur-jaur 'Noise isolation' (as I understand it) refers to earbuds that fit in-ear, like a plug or over-ear cover. They isolate your ear from sound (except of course the sounds from their speakers). A cheap to produce approach and no real tech, just a physical sound barrier in or around your ear. Passive noise-cancelling is where white-noise is injected into the headphones to mask external sounds. I have some cheaper Sony's that do this and I have had some success in aeroplanes with these. Basically a low hissing tone. Active noise cancelling, is well, as per the video, which as we see has left out two of the three types of noise 'cancelling' headphones. (they could update the description to specify what they are really discussing)

    • @Jaur-jaur
      @Jaur-jaur Před 5 lety +21

      djt2412 Active noise cancelling headphones do produce a bit of white noise, though it’s quite low in volume. Older models produce more. Are you sure they’re not actively cancelling?

    • @MrJames_1
      @MrJames_1 Před 5 lety +11

      @@Jaur-jaur Not according to the video above. My active headphones produce no sound unless its music or phone call. It's nice and quiet inside. Passive, they produce white noise to try and mask the sounds. My passive's were much better than airline standard headphones, but the actives, a whole other level of noise suppression.

    • @MrJames_1
      @MrJames_1 Před 5 lety +2

      @@Jaur-jaur My old ones are Sony MDR-NC8's bought in 2013 for ~$50. They make a hissing sound of which Sony says "After you turn on the power of the headphones, you may hear a slight hiss. This is the operating sound of the noise cancelling function, not a malfunction. The noise canceling function works for noise in the low frequency band primarily." They were pretty good for aeroplane use. But my current Parrot Zik 3's are dead silent, even weirdly silent and seem to have no limitation on frequency band (to my untrained ear). On my last long haul flight, it was like the whole cabin just got turned off. We may be splitting hairs on terminology so I'm happy to be wrong (or right ;-)).

    What’s brilliant about this invention is that the headphones listen for noise in order to deconstruct it. It actually filters out all the unwanted noise and in doing so makes it easier for the wearer to pinpoint specific sounds and where they’re coming from. Sure you’ve all been in a crowded room and you wonder where that comment came from, well these things cancel out the interference between you and that voice so that you know exactly where it came from. It’s a perfect eavesdropping device.😈

    How do noise cancelling headphones compensate for any latency between picking up external noises and inverting the phase? For it to work the latency would have to be equivalent to the time it takes from sound waves to travel from where it picks up external noise to the speakers, which is variable depending on air pressure and humidity. Are atmospheric conditions assumed?

    having done physics they explained "constructive" and "destructive interference" wrong. LOL when the waves combine it's just called interference. constructive is just the points where they add and destructive it where they cancel each other out. So "goodbye" and "hello" both constructiely and destructively interfered to give rise to the combined wave of both. Then noise cancelling then aims to destructively interfere with that total wave, but not perfectly since if it was perfect then it would actually be silent. sadly we aren't at that point in ANC

    I own the Sony WH1000XM3. Honestly, if you’re looking for the most well-rounded, I’d choose the sonys. This video was practically an ad for bose, not a single mention of sony, except for images. The bose are mostly for comfort, but also are good at noise cancellation. However, the sony’s can be uncomfortable for others because your ears will most likely touch the drivers. The sonys are definitely the clear winner over noise cancellation. Personally, the touching doesn’t annoy me, but you may beg the differ. Because when the headphones listen and create a wave, it's already too late, the crowd sound has already changed. Some of the waves gonna be the same if the overall crowd sound is the same but most of them gonna change even just one millisecond after, with different frequencies so this seems impossible to create a good noise cancellation because of the delay. So do they lower the decibels that contact your ear or are they doubling the decibels when they neutralize the sound with another sound wave?

    I have a pair of the Bose Quiet Comfort 2 earbuds, and wow, the noise cancelation on those is absolutely amazing. I recently was on a flight, and while is still could hear the place engines, it wasn't nearly as loud. I ended up just using them to dampen the sound while I read a book rather than listen to anything.

    I have a question actually. Does this noise cancelling headphones work while some song is played on the headphone and you won't be hearing anything except for that song or it happens like that nothing is being played on the headphones and even then you won't be hearing anything while wearing it, like it can help you studying or when you want silence in noisy places ???????

    use separate drivers to cancel the sound not the main music drivers. that would also fix the distortion problem at louder volumes.

      No, the Sony xm4s are perfect example of best noise canceling. Sony's DSEE Extreme allows your audio to remain high quality or same with LDAC support to reduce latency that comes with Bluetooth headphones/earbuds.

    I got the JBL Live 650 and they’re amazing! Plus they keep my ears warm in winter haha I actually just wanted to get some headphones instead of ear phones and these were on sale and were nc too~ I’m so happy 🥰✨

    I have two different headsets. The Bose QC35 and Sony MX4. Ok so the Sony MX4 have better sound and better noise cancelling. But the Bose feel more comfortable to wear for long periods of time (5+ hours) but the downside is the weaker sound in music and weaker noise cancelling. : / I wish both headsets didn't have downsides.
