t might also just be metabolic, I was over exercising obsessed with cardio, under eating and not getting enough carbs which resulted in several nutritional deficiencies after 6 years etc (thought I was being healthy, felt great in the initial years) unknowingly I was putting my body in a catabolic state which will cause the body to stay awake and alert, as it is meant to. Think about what you are doing and what messages you are sending to your central nervous system via the way you eat, exercise and live...you might be putting your body in survival mode and the body is simply doing what its meant to be doing. I cut back and changed the way I exercise opting for more anabolic promoting activities with ample recovery time, ate more frequent balanced meals, avoided stimulants and recently quit alcohol. It has taken a long time for my body to balance out and recover, I now don't even need to bother with or think about sleep hygiene, I get tired and sleep. I hope this helps someone in a similar predicament, the worst part is not knowing what is happening, how to recover. and no one seems to be able to help. You can't relax, meditate or think your way out of a catabolic state....Give your body what it needs and your central nervous system and mind will calm and deep sleep will return.

4:50 - very true. When I was wrting some fan-fiction stories, I stumbled upon this very trick. The feeling of relief after I jumped out of my bed and immediately wrote down some stupid fantasies was enourmous and sleeping was greate afterwards.
    Great video again, thank you.

I can reccommend either of two books as a cure for insomnia. They are:
    - 'A Critique of Pure Reason' by Immanuel Kant
    - 'Capital' by Karl Marx.
I challenge anyone to get past the first page of either without falling asleep.

Excellent presentation. I can't tell you how infintely annoying it bacame listening to Dr. Mandell guarantee sleep to an insomniac. (no offense Dr. Mandell). It just made matters worse adding to the extensive list of supplements (all worthless-for me that is), Blue light blocking glasses. etc etc ad infinitum. Attitude is everything. Along with as you advise , reading something at least for me that is intructive and positive on my Kindle. Books on self awareness. Also the breathing technique you mention that although doesn't always put me to sleep reduces my heart rate and relaxes me. Also I use Yoga Nidra CZcams videos. However the biggest lesson is to see it positively and using it for good. Hey at least I was learning or resting. The last thing that didnt work was bananna with cinnamon and peanut butter. Now I laugh at that nonsense. Thanks

Two and four hours? I’ve been awake for 48 hours now. I think I just beat you as the worlds worst sleeper.
In all seriousness, I know it’s not a competition and I’m glad you managed to get over your insomnia. At the moment, I’m just unable to sleep. I’m putting all these techniques into practice, but nothing really works just yet. Hard to get past the hypnic jerks that completely jolt you out of any sort of sleep state that you might fall into. Did you used to get hypnic jerks? Either way, I do appreciate this video. I like that it’s a no nonsense straight to the point video.

It's ok -- If you're using that sleepless time for productive reflection, gratitude, etc., then it can still be productive! Hang in there and keep at it. The mental peace will come. (Also protip: Keep your room < 67 degrees F.)
