This was a beautiful version. Gregory died on the morning of April 30, 2007 at the age of 23 from cystic fibrosis complications while waiting in the hospital for a lung transplant. R.I.P. Gregory Lemarchal

Gregory won Star Academy singer contest in France.
He sang this song during the contest, a cover of Daniel Balavoine, another french singing legend who died too young. It became his signature song.
When he sang it, he was suffering of cystic fibrosis, at an advanced stage. Normally due to lung capacity being halved and intense pain, he should not have been possible for him to sing it.
But he did and you couldn’t tell he was suffering: he was living to sing, living his dream, and was not exposing his troubles.
During the contest, he had a duet with Lara Fabian and she was very impressed by Gregory, she called him « the angel of music ».
After the contest, he relased an album which was an immense success with quite a few hits and had a concerts tour, fully packed.
Then immediately after, 2 years after the contest, he died as he could not have a transplant on time.
He was 23 yo, almost 24.
His death was a big shock in France and he is still remembered as a pure soul.
Dimash was attracted to cover this song when he discovered his version.

Yes, it's hard to review anyone singing a song that Dimash has covered. Yet, I felt everything and had goosebumps the same as I did when I first heard Dimash sing it. It's just different, but so beautiful. I don't know anything that Gregory sings so thank you for bringing this to my attention.

This is this cover by Gregory that attracted Dimash to sing SOS.
And , once you know that Gregory was very sick, died less than 2 years later, and singing that way should not have been possible for him theoretically, then you can only have a profound respect and admiration for him.
His death broke France’s heart. He was an Angel and will always been recognized as such in our country.

In the iconic Starmania musical, SOS is a tragic monologue by a gang leader as he faces his girlfriend’s violent death. While Gregory did not impersonate the gang character, he brought forward the universal tragedy of a human being condemned by the fate and colored each word with such disarming authenticity as if the lyrics totally spoke for himself. The author of the lyrics, Luc Plamondon (the success of his Notre-Dame de Paris musical was marked by the Guinness record), admitted that only very few times in his life he was so much impressed by an artist. According to France Gall, the wife of late Michel Berger, the composer of Starmania (she starred in Starmania as well), Lemarchal’s live performance of SOS was magnificent. Gregory’s interpretation made the major impact on the perception of SOS and introduced it to the younger generation inside and outside his country. Many covers since were apparently inspired by his tone and style (including that by Dimash, as it was referred in the video).

I just responded to your most recent reaction to Angelina Jordan's rendition of "I'm a Fool to Want You" and then ran into this one.
Grégory Lemarchal composed this song and wrote the lyrics. Here is a translation. Perhaps the lyrics make sense when viewed against his fate (see other comments):
S.O.S. from an earthling in distress
    By Grégory Lemarchal
Why do I live, why do I die
Why do I laugh, why do I cry
Here's an S.O.S from an earthling in distress
I've never had my feet on the ground
    I'd rather be a bird
    I feel bad about myself
I'd like to see the world upside down
If only it were more beautiful, more beautiful from above
    From above
I've always confused life with comic books
    I'm longing for a metamorphosis
I feel something pulling me, pulling me
    Pulling me upwards
In the great lottery of the universe, I didn't pick the right number
    I feel bad about myself
    I don't want to be a robot -- daily vicious work-sleep-work circle
Why do I live, why do I die
Why do I scream, why do I cry
I think I'm picking up waves from another world
I've never had my feet on the ground
    I'd rather be a bird
    I feel bad about myself
I'd like to see the world upside down
    I'd rather be a bird
    Best from Germany
    Robert

This SOS song was written for the French/Canadian rock opera Starmania, believe 1976. Gregory was not even born then.
This was a masterful performance by Gregory though as he was born with the genetic desease Cystic Fibrosis.

@@paulschmehl2124Sos is a masterpiece composed by Michel Berger, a phenomenal french singer/composer/songwriter, and Luc Plamondon, a famous lyricist from Quebec, as part of the musical Starmania in the late 70s.
Daniel Balavoine, another french legend, was the original singer and performer.
The cover by Gregory Lemarchal during Star Academy season 4 in winter 2004, about 25 years later, also became legendary. Even more when french people discovered he was suffering from cystic fibrosis. He died only 2 years later after having become immensely popular.

I’d like to thank you for inviting your audience to support the artists you are reacting to. IMHO deeper insight into the interpretation would be great, with the focus on the original SONG, and not the the other cover you might have personally loved, which nonetheless might not be the right reference here. Another suggestion would be doing some research on the artist you are reacting to. So much individual value and beauty is easily distorted through that “is he as good as Dimash” lens, while ironically Dimash might be “not as good as Lemarchal” under different criteria.
In terms of the interpretation, the lyrics set the phrasing, the structure, the dynamics, the emotional matter, the drama. And the more meaning they bring, the more thoughtful vocals they require to be expressed. If you happened to discover that Dimash might not know all the correct lines (hint: check the second verse), would you still be willing to compare articulate and emotionally accurate delivery by Lemarchal with phonetic version by Dimash? The biggest irony of the “after Dimash” commentaries is that the success of performing SOS is too often measured by the “power” in falsetto, despite the actual song is supposed to transmit the sense of how powerless human is against the rule of the universe, that leads to the suffering. SOS was tailored for Daniel Balavoine’s powerful voice, yet he didn’t produce a single powerful note in this song. Anyone is free to love Dimash. But one needs to give credit to the French singer, singing the French song, written by the French composer, for the way he does it because he expresses truthfully the song, and not because he fails to be Dimash.
But even regardless of the actual song, here the questionable comparison supports the wrong attitude of downplaying the extent of the professional ability dealing with the utter damage (including to singing) caused by the grave disease. Should we ever conflate being ILL with being NOT GOOD ENOUGH? Should we put Dimash under equally terrible conditions to factually test such statement? I hope NO, even if Lemarchal might have well topped him, given his phenomenal ability to control his voice in nearly impossible situation.

You are suggesting that I do things that require knowledge I do not have. I'm not a professional musician nor am I musically trained. I wouldn't know, for example, whether a singer sang the correct lyrics or not.(Often the songs are in a foreign language so I don't understand the lyrics at all, and subtitles are often grossly inaccurate.)
I am only beginning to understand terminology and that only because my wonderful viewers continue to educate me (as you have here.) I enjoy music, many different kinds of music, but I am not capable of discerning the kind of details you refer to.
When I react to a singer (because someone has requested it, which is what my channel specializes in), I seldom know anything at all about them or the song. I'm reacting to the sound, the performance, the setting, the singer's voice, the instrumentals. Beyond that, I don't have the expertise to even comment cogently.
My channel attracts fans of artists. Often, they see their artist as the very best in the world. The reason they all get along on my channel is because I praise what is praiseworthy, criticize what I don't like, and don't compare them to other artists.
But critiques such as yours are extremely helpful and they benefit not only me but my viewers.

@@paulschmehl2124 Thank you very much for taking your time to respond to me. I certainly understand you can not do a detailed research before your every reaction. And of course you don’t have to be an expert to share your impressions. In this case my major concern was that either comparisons should be done in a very accurate and balanced manner with all factors considered, or avoided at all, as even small yet debatable comparisons (as on 5:22 ) tend to invite unwarranted comments by some guests (I’ve seen a couple under this video). Thank you for taking my criticism as constructive one, as it was indeed meant this way. And thank you again for this reaction.

But it’s gregory’s version who attracted Dimash to cover it.
And gregory was suffering cystic fibrosis with less than 50% of his lung capacity remaining and intense pain while singing.
He died of this disease at 23yo, very shortly after.
If you compare singers, which I am not a fan of, you should know all the facts.
I don’t know what would have remained of Dimash’s amazing vocal tone and range if he had suffered of the same disease. (Don’t misinterpret what I am saying: I love Dimash! And i am glad we can have him in his full artistry).

Yes, after doing some reading about this young talent who passed away way too early, I’m even more impressed about his voice.
I also fully agree about not comparing artists. For me, it was actually not so much about a comparison between the two singers. It was more about how completely blown away I was when I heard Dimash’s rendition, because it was the very first time to hear his voice and I even remember how I kind of half-heartedly convinced myself to at least listen to one of his songs… that’s how my journey with Dimash started, and I don’t believe I’ve ever been so surprised in my life, lol.

Sorry, but your opinion is so much “out of tune” with that by Luc Plamondon, the author of SOS, who was profoundly impressed by the quality of the interpretation of Lemarchal. Just for the note: Plamondon is the author of the legendary Starmania, part of wich SOS originally is, and also the author of even more legendary Notre-Dame de Paris, that holds the Guinness record for popularity. Plamondon was in fact so much impressed by Lemarchal’s voice and artistic talent, that promised to grant another particularly special song to Lemarchal personally. Plamondons’s song indeed appeared on his firs studio album. As for Dimash’s version, it’s phonetic and, with all respect, for solid reasons can not be properly considered a reference for SOS.
