I never get tired of the Fagen Becker sound. And all those great musicians that appear on those albums these are masterpieces. I’ve been listening to them since 1973. Props to the producers and sound engineers.

Unmistakably a New York sound here, and yes, a lovely video. I remember someone calling out the same kind of "high-heeled elegant style" on Sophie B Hawkins' "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover", they both have that suave, soulful, cinematic swagger. :)
My kinda heaven - Driving at night around NYC ! - With Dan on the stereo system & my lady Paulla at my side - One can dream - One day maybe ? Thankyou for sharing this audio video gem !
Interesting! I had never heard this song before. Donald seems to have reused part of the chorus melody of this song in the Steely Dan song "Everything Must Go" from the last Steely Dan album. This song also reminds me of the song "Century's End" he did for the movie "Bright lights, Big City ". Maybe this was recorded in that period (1988).
it's from 1993. Jennifer Warnes did the song a year earlier. interesting facts: -he wrote the music but the lyrics were written for a Spike Lee movie. Song didn't make it -the reason it sounds "Century's End" is it was initially written during when he wrote "Century's End" for the soundtrack of Michael J. Fox's movie "Bright Lights, Big City." Also on that soundtrack - LL Cool J's "Goin' Back to Cali"
Thanks for the info! It does indeed sound more like "Century's End" than the sound (production) on his Kamakiriad album. Maybe the recording was 'shelved' and then later released in 1993 (?).
Demo from Donald Fagen's aborted follow-up to the Nightfly? That makes sense. Stylistically and chord progression wise, if fits in with Lazy Nina, Love Will Make it Right era stuff.
For me too...if I ever get to The Big Apple...in the meantime I'll keep it around for my part of the world...Armpit, Ohio....just gotta love the stare's back...LOL
Maria Lopez Steely 'Don’s' ‘Big Noise, New York’ is a ‘(Without Your) Love Song’ that recognizes no international boundaries, neither in space, nor time.
I wonder if it was because it was made in the years between The Nightfly and Kamakiriad, and maybe by the time he made Kamakiriad he didn’t think it went with the album.
Fagen was a perfectionist, if it wasn't absolutely pristine by his standards, he would retake or drop the tracks. It's sad that he dropped what could inarguably have been next biggest hits, but that's the way he is, and I respect that. After all, he still is one of the greatest musicians I've ever heard.
“Every stranger spoke your name, every sign said yesterday…” Man, it’s hard to believe this was 35 years ago. I was twenty one years old, and had read Jay McInerney’s book before I saw the movie. This song is part of the soundtrack of my youth, a disproportionate amount of which was authored by Don & Walt. It really brings me right back to 1988.

"PS: The twin towers I'm sure must be seen here,I'll have to keep looking periodically through my travels.....🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹" What a curious, impossible, thing to say. I’ve known DF’s song from about 2004, and one thing that is so enthralling about, ‘BL,BC,’ - like a magical spell - is that it’s almost...almost... in the far-background, as much about a lost-love, as it is about the also twinned-vanished, Twin Towers. Twice in the vid are images of where they once stood, now two floating-baths of illuminated Nothing. A notable public person, who I will leave unmentioned, here, once wanted to say that, internationally, there was the absence of a presence of the U.S. What he actually said was that it was “the presence of an absence.” Coincidentally, that dumb, ineloquent error, states the very heart and soul of this excruciating song.
Being originally from New Jersey looking at the New York skyline brings back a lot of memories. I was actually able to see it from my house on a clear day!
I'm obsessed with this to the point of searching down an actual single version of Trans Island Skyway which includes this song a a live version of Home At Last. 😲😍👌
I e never been to NYC, have always wanted to go. What a trip it could and would be!! Maybe one day, or afternoon, it could happen. In the Universe that this song creates. Their isn’t enough words to make a Study Of The Dan
This is the first time I am hearing this track. It's absolutely brilliant as always!
+1. Excellent.
The beats are super layered, complicated and masterful!!!!!!!!
It's the Wendel/Nichols drum sound school!
He reused the same melody at 1:25 in Steely Dan's Everything Must Go. Good stuff.
The melody during the lyric "this old town's no fun at all" right before that? Reused for Godwhacker. 🤯

Great song. Love Donald Fagens voice..Amazing view of NYC
This song...the essence of New York town in song...simply surreal. What a way to celebrate the essence of the Big Apple.....In a song!
