As a fan of "That 70s show" this is pretty much exactly how i feel, the chemistry between the characters is just not there, making everything feel forced, and watching the old characters just makes it more evident, even with just a few scenes you can see those characters still work and it's because the cast chemistry is still intact.

I don´t think thats that big of an issue, the main cast is brand new and probably havent worked together before, how could they have chemestry, without knowing each other? Also I think the later episodes of the season are quite entertaining, maybe not as entertaining as 70s, but again its a new cast and new writers. Older? They were high schoolers at the beginning of that 70s show and they are the same age at the beginning of this. Also it wouldn't make sense for them to be older based on when it starts and how old Leia is. Donna already has to have to been pregnant with her relatively soon after the end of the original. And before anyone says they could have started it later in the 90s: that's deliberate so they can keep the show running for multiple seasons like that 70s show where each season for this show is a summer

In season one, of the kids, Topher and Danny were the only ones that could actually act. Mila and Laura were terrible early on. And Ashton and Wilmer were not very good either. But, they got better. I agree. When I was watching it I was trying to give it a break by thinking that the 70s show was not the greatest piece of tv ever and the reason why it was so good was because of the vibe and how they captured it. Nothing about the new show feels like it's about the 90s. literally nothing. Im not asking for references out the wazoo, but that 70s show you knew it was the 70s.

    • @tayawalter4741
      @tayawalter4741 Před rokem +14

@@seth1665 The 90s reference felt super forced and in the realm of Family Guy's "remember that time" style. In the original I felt like the call backs and vision sequences actually played a purpose, but this time around it felt like they were trying to seem cool by just being knowledgeable? IDK, even the 90210 reference felt super forced and weird.
Another issue I found, which nobody is talking about, is the fact that the show REALLY doesn't lend itself to the binge format. With That 70s Show, airing weekly actually helped it feel like REAL time passed with the characters. If Jackie said something like "It's been a week since Hyde and I broke up" you actually felt it because it HAD been a while since we last saw the characters. That 90s Show tried to do the same, but since we all binged it in a day or 2, it threw the pacing off imho. Sure, there were through lines in the plot, but I almost wish they did weekly releases. If they did, then maybe the **SPOILERS** cliffhanger with Leia and Nate wouldn't have felt so forced and out of nowhere since the audience hadn't JUST seen her with Jay in the previous episode.
I still liked the show, and I hope it gets a solid 4-5 seasons (long haul by today's standards), but they for sure need to make it feel more 90s going forward. And if you want a great show that really felt like the 90s, I highly recommend "High School" on Amazon Freevee.

There are still adventures and plots with Raven and Chelsea, which appeals to older fans, while also sharing the spotlight with their kids to introduce the new characters. There was usually two plots per episode, and Raven and Chelsea may have been split sometimes, but they still got to have great moments together.
Girl Meets World, for example, does not have much surrounding Cory and Topanga as adults. Each parent is normally split off into different situations in the episodes (Cory with the main four and Topanga with Auggie). I think one of the biggest issues was that it was so short, like the original series had 20+ episodes per season, so going from 20 episodes to 10 really made a difference, the plot lines felt way too rushed and there wasn't enough time for the characters to really have that connection that the original friend group already kinda started with. SPOILER ALERT but there was literally no build up to Nate and Leia having feelings for each other and was very much out of the blue, and it's sort of the same with Leia and Jays relationship. I thought that they were cute but there was very little build up, and when comparing to the original show with Eric and Donna's relation ship there was SO much build up just in the first season. If they had more time the characters could have gotten fleshed out much more, so I'm hoping they get another season cause I really saw some potential in the show(that could just be me literally being able to enjoy anything though(literally give me a show thats really hated and I could probably enjoy it)) and I miss that 70s show and maybe in the second season we can get more Jackie cause literally the fact she was only there for 40ish seconds hurts.

It's like a poorly engineered rollercoaster just flopping up and down with no suspense or emotion whatsoever. I mean in the TINY amount of time they were allotted they decided to rush a relationship from cringy flirting to mad obsessive infatuation to then have it crash and burn. Only for it to resurface and settle and finally have it capsize and board a new ship (to follow an apt metaphor there lmao) as the credits roll.
It is such inexcusable, sloppy and lazy excuse for writing. I understand that they possibly had time constraints and want to make a bombshell plot impact upon the first season to lure people in and convince Netflix producers it was not a waste of money, but it spends absolutely no time developing character, it doesn't even subtly try to speed it up it straight up rams it from 0 to 60 without warning into a wall. I mean even the immediate switch from what's-her-name (example of how unmemorable the characters are) and Leia becoming "best friends", followed by a petty argument leading to an obviously ephemeral seperation and are immediately back to being as thick as thieves.
The whole point of the show is lost on me, it seems to have thrown 100 shots in the dark and missed every target audience in a futile attempt to appease them all. The bad acting, writing/pacing, awkward laugh tracks and induced awkwardness holds it back... in other words EVERYTHING. Literally the only salvageable thing here (maybe) is the concept. If executed entirely differently it may work... but even then it feels like the main cast were mentally checked ou from the get-go, and I wasn't convinced of their roles and characters like I was in the past. Especially Donna and Michael + Jackie... felt like they were there for courtesy to the seminal point in their respective careers or a hefty wad of cash. Either way I am sad it was so poorly executed and I will 100% finish it, for research purposes, no fr it may get slightly better but I doubt it with such a weaksauce first season.

I watched in on reruns in the mid 2000s, as did my parents and my Gen X sister. For my parents, That 70s Show was them reliving their teen years: the fashion, the hair styles, the music, the weird pop culture references.
The new show feels like they are trying to latch onto those same generations, but the teens dont feel 90s at all.

I HIGHLY recommend That 70s Show. It's so genuine, especially the early seasons. With The 90s show, I lost count the amount of times we cut to a scene and the characters are standing facing each other square on, *awkwardly* before they start speaking. That 70s Show had a dynamism that reflected well on teenagers - careening in and out of the rooms and things. It's clear that this is rendition is a paint by numbers approach with little to no heart/purpose other than to exist. No one is interesting enough, no two relationships are interesting enough.

Young Sheldon is the perfect example of what a sequel to a sitcom should be (even though it is technically a prequel). Don't make the sequel a sitcom, make it a light-hearted series with no laugh tracks, use cinematic cameras, move out of the old house and move into a new one that actually feels like the time period it's in, but casually throw in nostalgic references and places. Young Sheldon also replaced the actors for certain characters, so that's how you solve the Hyde problem.

And I think one big difference between the two shows is that Eric & his friends were an established group. Besides Fez, who was a foreign exchange student, they’d all known each other since childhood. For a long long time.
In the reboot, Leia is new to the group. I haven’t finished the episodes, so I don’t know if they’ve explained how long Gwen and the others have been friends though.
Also, the age differences are very apparent. Mila was the youngest of the original group (because she wasn’t super honest about her age lol) and the others were like around 20ish. These kids all seem pretty young.

I thought the storyline of her seeing her dad in Red, and him ultimately deciding to do what her father didn’t do for her, was the only genuinely emotional beat in the season, and one that should carry over into season 2.

That’s an issue I had with the handling of the original cast in general, which I really picked up on when Kitty sees Pastor Dave in the adult section of the video store.
They’re constantly taking jabs at and undoing growth from the previous series.
Kelso is back with Jackie after she abused him, and he had learned to grow up and take responsibility for his life through his daughter and Brooke.
Jackie apparently is back to being just as awful as she was in the early seasons of That 70s Show, negating her growth in the later seasons.
Fez’s heart and innocence is completely stripped, leaving a sleaziness to everything he does and says.
He feels more like Barney from How I Met your Mother.
Hyde and Laurie aren’t even mentioned.
It goes on, and the original series had its share of disrespecting characters,
      (R.I.P Charlie)
But I’d prefer the show to make more efforts to show how the original cast has improved for the better, as opposed to devolving them, or keeping them pathetically the same.

If teens and young adults get behind this show then it will be a hit for Netlix. Case in point the original teen viewers of the 70's show are now the parents of teens who are watching the 90's show. So time flies.

I'm a fan of the original and definitely think That 70's Show was better, but I enjoyed the new one. I wasn't sold in the first few episodes and the show has some key weaknesses throughout, but it got some good laughs out of me, some second hand embarrassment, a few good moments of nostalgia and by the end of it, I actually started caring about the characters. I'm excited to see how the show will develop. Just like That 70's Show, I think it'll get better and feel more rounded as it goes on.

I think a major reason why these reboots feel off is that just a few years ago, it would take a lot longer time to make movies and TV. Since it took longer, people usually took greater care to make sure that they're getting each little element of the show right, whether that be the casting and the chemistry, whether it be the lines, a lot of the time it's most notable in the pacing of the episodes, etc... Now that's technology is better and streaming services exist, which drop tons of the season at once, the incentive is to get the product out there as quick as possible quantum so a lot of the quality is lost.

Felt like the 90s show really did capture the 90s feel, can’t wait for season 2 😅

I'm just a few younger than the kids in show (they would've been born in 1980 and I was born in 1982).
So I was getting this weird "double nostalgia" where I was nostalgic for the orginal show, but also nostalgic for the 90s themselves.

It's Netflix. Knowing them it'll get canceled either immediately or right after a second season.

I mean the old cast took like 16 episodes to find their timing

It shouldn't take until season 2 for a cast to get better. A few episodes? Sure. An entire season and then some? No.

That's why it's so weird Netflix doesn't own it. Isn't half the point of rebooting that you spike views of the og?

Hey man, every video you post I watch and they all make my day, there’s a new movie that is “night at the museum” but animated and I feel like it would be cool to see a vid about it

As a fan of That 70s Show, I happened to like That 90s Show as well. The show is a pretty good follow-up to its predecessor unlike whatever That 80s Show tried to be back in the 2000s. But That 70s Show is still funnier. I also think that it's a waaaay better successor to its parent series (no pun intended) compared to Girl Meets World. GMW was just pure cringe, laughably melodramatic, and it barely tries to respect the BMW lore.
There was a good balance between the old and new cast members. The casting of Leia and Kelso's son was perfect. Leia also seems to share both aspects of Eric and Donna. I also wanted to see how Kelso's daughter Betsy might appear in That 90s Show. She was born in 1979 and would've been around 15-16 years old in 1995. It's a shame that Hyde probably won't be in this series. He was one of my favorite characters too...oof! 😮‍💨
I thought the kids did alright and they seem to be finding their feet by the end of the season. Keep in mind that most of the new cast are also younger this time around unlike how the original cast members got started (Mila Kunis was the only teenager during the earlier seasons).

Netflix recommended this show to me, but I'm not going to waste my time watching this show especially if it's bad. Also, I've never seen that 70's show so I have no business watching this anyway.
