- After coming from a tiny backyard in California, we can’t believe this is what we get to do! It’s been a long time coming, and it feels so amazing to be growing our own food.

That was so perfect the way he moved those chickens wow .your farm is coming along so great good for you guys. 👏👏😃😆🙏🏼
Thanks so much for continuing to act as a welcoming distraction in these times. God bless your family in this journey
Ben was not sifting compost, Ben was in his happy place creating nutrient rich soil to grow groceries. ;)
I'm with Ben!!! Happy place. No soil like it
In my 67 years of life, I have never planted a whole potato..We always cut them so there is at least one eye on each piece.. That cuts down on the amount you need and you get a nice plant for every piece you plant.. It will be interesting to see if you get a lot more potatoes by planting the whole potato... Thanks for sharing this...
We cut them too let them air dry for a couple days. 2 or 3 eyes each pototo
When you cut them you let them air dry for a day then they don't fit as easy.

Yes, you can grow 100 tomato plants. I did 65 the year we moved to our 20 acres of cheat grass, sage brush, and scab rock. The water well driller dug/scraped a pond sized recess for the gusher that’s never came. Filled it back in and I planted my garden. Every night we picked off dozens of tomato horn worms. Also pick bushels and bushels of tomatoes to eat, can, share, can some more, share some more. Gave up trying to chase off the jack rabbits, there were plenty to share with them, too.
Those horned worms were interesting. Couldn’t hardly figure out which end was which when I was a kid. Lol intimidating rascals.😊
And the stings are horrible...from accidental contact...like fire ants..lol
Thanks for this upbeat tempo. We need this now. Thank you for thinking of us out here and bringing us along.
What an amazing thing to watch you work together as a family!! Could watch for hours. Thank You for Sharing!!
You are such hard workers! 👍🏼
My grandfather taught me that. Nasty (good) swamp water and worthless dirt+potatoes will prep any P.O.S. dirt patch for better growth next year. In other words. If you have dirt patches that are NOT that good. Plant potatoes and water with swamp water intermittently through the year and you will get a patch that will grow "Sensitive" crops the next year. Hope that helps.
That's awesome my dad did that same thing. I always would ask him why are you using that dirty water and he would he would always say its for next years crops. LOL!
That's why, when the Mississippi floods, the next few years had an abundance of crops. Same for the Nile in Egypt.
I was told that you use spuds to break up clay soil, and with the compost you add you get good soil, funny how the knowledge travels , but never heard about the swamp water.
Watching Ben move the chickens was like watching a well choreographed ballet. No chaos. No drama. And he did it by himself. The homestead has come a long way. It’s beautiful!
"Chuck's been busy." Still chuckling over that one. Everything is looking so good. Great to see things turning green on the farm. Meg, pregnancy becomes you. Your face had filled out and you are looking healthy and lovely. I enjoyed seeing the boys helping out. They must bring you such joy. Take care!
Great to see The Hollar Homestead alive with animals and vegetables and trees, Oh My!!!
Hallo from Nelson NZ, I've watched your Chanel for a long time and really support what you are doing. Thank you for sharing.
Rosie Faavae from Nelson
You need to start collecting canning supplies now for the fall now you can check out yard sales Craigslist and Facebook selling wall and of course store sales just a thought. Great start on your gardens
Yeah folks are already buying the canning supplies out at our local store and the hardware stores chicks sold out quicker than normal.
I love watching your progress. I'm living the life!! (Vicariously, through you.)
Oh! Almost forgot: I have never seen such a stress-free and easy going chicken move. Way to use what you know, Ben! You know your chickens.
WOW !!!! You guys are just movin right along !!!!!!!!!! Have you thought about container potatoes , you can stack the potatoes into a small space with a high yield . Lots of videos on it !!! BUT Garden is awesome . Can you show us up close the tiller !!!
Awsome! Learn how to dry preserve food. Especially tomatoes. Grow those 100 tomatoe plants, and become the sundried tomatoes queen! You will be able to control your sauces much easier. So you can get rich, thick sauces, tomatoe paste to can, and even partially dry tomatoes to save room in your canned sauces.
Great things happening there! Oh, 100 tomato plants, tom sauce, roasted, stewed, soup, juice, fresh, oh yah!
The fruits of your labor is evident! Things are looking great! I'm happy for ya'll
Yay chicken mama! It's all coming along beautifully, it may seem like it's taking forever on your end but from this side of the camera ya'll are doing awesome! ❤🌿
Question: Are you feeling "AT HOME" now? It sure looks like it! I feel the acceleration in hope and excitement and the energy you both are releasing! Yeah! It's really happening!
I really enjoy when you let your boys have the camera and do commentary. You all are doing awesome. I love watching how you are progressing on your homestead.
Looks great......I remember my first hornworm ....my Lord it freaked me out...had no idea what it was...my husband came home plucked it off and watched the chickens fight over their treat.
Your property is looking awesome ❣️❣️❣️
I dare you to Plant 100 Tomato Plants lol. Your having the Time of Your Life being able to Plant everything you want. Good Luck with the Eggs Fingers Crossed. Love to see what happens. You have a very hard working husband with little helpers also. God Bless and Peace Be With You All ☮️🙏❣️
If they plant 60, snap off the "suckers", remove the lower branches while they're young, and pinch off the first blooms to grow stronger plants, plus soil enrichment...fish guts work great, they can eat all they want, and can 125-150 quarts easily. Have done it at least 15-20 years. Gave away a couple bushels, too.
Ben, you rock that pink bucket! Speaking for myself, you and the rest of the homesteading community have responded to the current situation by leading by example. Very encouraging, very grounding. If we each do our best to positively impact those in our sphere of influence, we can make a huge impact for the better. Thank you.
During all the down time, I have gone back to episode 1 and watching all over again. Ben has been sifting compost from the beginning 😁
It is so beautiful to see your wonderful gardens starting! You are all blessed by your endeavors! I t will be amazing to see all of the bounty soon!
It’s going to be so much fun to follow you develop your first ever HUGE garden! You’re going to be one very busy lady preserving all that food!
While she's pregnant this will be interesting. Right at canning season will be giving birth.
I love all you are doing. Everything looks great. Thanks for being an encouragement.
Do you have enough containers/jars to can everything ? Order early lots & lots of people are are preparing get that stuff early...❤
+
My grandparents usually had 500-700 jars in the basement at all times. When Grandaddy died in 1989, and he hadn't canned since Granny passed in 1978, there were 400 left...including the most beautiful snbap beans ever...canned in 1960...this was 1990...they were delicious.
Wow very good you guys have it going and growing on on Hollar land proud of you guys and those cute little helpers. Keep living that Dream. Thanks for sharing🙏💓👀
Keep all the positive vibes out there God Bless you all
Wow. Things are taking shape so nicely. Enjoy your BQ you Truly Beautiful People.
Does that incubator turn or roll the eggs? If not, you need to mark each egg, front and back, (I use an X on one side and an O on the other) and turn them each day.
I have eggs in a homemade incubator and turn them every 4-6 hours. On day 10. Started with 20 eggs. Candled them on day seven. Two eggs were not viable. 18 of them you could actually see a small mass inside and you could see the baby chick moving. It was so cool.
Glad Ben caught that Meg when you said chill by the fire, I had to chuckle. Continued good luck with the garden.
during these crazy times it is so nice to see ya'll going about your work on the land.. really consoling. thanks
I Know you all are proud of yourselves, I'm proud of you too. May God Bless you & keep you safe. Great Job!!!!
Its true... you can never have too many potatoes.
Isn't it wonderful having so much space to grow all of the things?!
Hope the burgers were tasty. :)
My hubby totally agrees with that potato statement... lol not me!
Meg,you can grow all the things, this is your life. 😁
Maybe if theres any open restaurants or cafes near you they might let you take their green garbage, especially if it saves them pickups and haulage they have to pay for. Just pick it up early in the morning before they open, or midday after the prep chefs are done. Mucho primo compost.
NC isn’t under quarantine?
@@reesekolcow6136 Yes we went on lockdown at 5pm today. Still, there are restaurants open for pick up and delivery only. And you could call and make the arrangements and have pickup times so you don't have to touch, just pick up buckets. Edible Acres does it and they just switch out the buckets leaving clean ones. They make more compost than you would believe. Check out his chicken compost system. I think he has a play list.
@@gelwood99 It also is prime pig food.
Excellent idea! The pigs would be in heaven.
This is the wholesome content I need in the middle of all the crazy LOL! Love y’all stay happy & healthy!!
I love your vlog. My daughter calls your the happy family!! JUST always Happy!! No matter what you do!! Whether your building, planting, schooling the boys, or growing a homestead. Love your channel.
You never have enough potatoes with those boys! Good job Ben and Meg and boys!
I just love y'all's story. Y'all have come a long way. Y'all should be proud of y'all's self. Y'all will make it just fine. God speed
Since this toilet paper shortage happened I can't help cracking up whenever anyone says "I'm wiped." 😃
your chickens behaved so nicely during the move, and its going to be a great year for harvest! love the beds, love all the food you will have
First thing I see is purple dead nettle and wild onions!! Both great to harvest!
What do you do with the purple dead nettle?
@@acmdad I dry the tops and save them for teas. And then I also blend them down and cook them down with a small bit of olive oil and then use either soy or bees wax to make a medicinal cream. Theres many health benefits to them. But I dry some as they are only around in the spring time
So excited to see how your garden produces this year....looking to be a very busy year of preserving food. Sure glad I have lots of home canned foods on the shelf right now....You have a beautiful family can't wait to see the new little one!! God Bless and look after you all..
Your farm is looking so beautiful in this spring !!
It makes my heart happy to see you enthralled with your blessings 💜
thats awesome! Lovin the gardens!
It's great seeing you two smile. If you love what your doing it is not as hard to do it. I didn't say easy. But sometimes the harder things bring us happiness. Bless your family during this unusual times.
I agree w/ ur young helper...It's a slot. Furrow is just a fancy synonym. lol
We were lucky we had a dairy farm with lots of manure to grow our 1 acre garden and planted 2 acres of sweet corn with the the cow corn when it was ready we invited our neighbors to come and pick as much sweet corn as they wanted. Same with apples ( we had 4 different varieties of trees) and strawberries (over 100 plants). A lot of hard work but we'll worth the effort. Can't wait to see how your garden grows and see how many chicks you get. Blessings to all. 🙂🇺🇸
When we planted sweet corn with our cow corn it tasted bitter.
Salmon Hunter that is bcuz the sweet corn cross pollenated with the crop corn. Usually becuz they are planted too close (time wise) together. Or the pollenation time frames matchee. Its suggested if you have to plant them in the same area (which is not recommended) that you make sure their pollenation dates are at least 2 weeks apart.
@@denisewilson8367 My understanding is it isn't a big deal unless you intend to use some as seed corn.
omg! Congratulations Meg & Hubby! & Brothers! Wow! So Awesome!
Yall are so Motivating with the land. The Journey is Beautiful. Blessings.
Noticed comments about cutting seed potatoes, and then heeling them over before planting. A good way to do it. You can also plant the whole seed potato (just make sure the majority of the eyes are pointed upward) and also have a great harvest. The only difference I have found is the initial money to purchase more seed potatoes.
Meg, it's time you start rounding up canning jars. Here's to a great harvest this year.
Love seeing the boys around asking questions, riding the cart behind the vehicle, etc. 👏🏻
I love how the swales were there all ready for you!
your gardens are looking so wonderful. I wish I could be doing the same.
You are glowing your face is so pretty .well done on getting the spuds in
The gardens look so pretty! I can just imagine the plants you will have there very soon!
We are getting a lot of rain and I scour the weather reports daily knowing it will happen 😀😀 sunshine. Blessings
Read the book Carrots love Tomatoes it is amazing to find out what works best near each other and what doesn't
"making a slot" he's not wrong, and adorable. I love it and I'm using that from now on
So jealous...you inspire me to tend my container garden and enjoy the fruits of my labor
“We’ll just pretend.” 🤣 Way to go Meg! We did that with our quail when we 1st started. It works 75% if the time: good pretenders. 🙂
What state? A couple of things - you can save plastic milk jugs, cut the bottoms off and use them to start seeds (make drain holes in the bottom) and go ahead and set out some of your plants. If the temp drops put the milk jugs over the plants to protect from frost. If putting out 100 tomato plants do it in 3rds a week or two apart to stagger the harvest. If you have green tomatoes when first frost hits pull them, remove any stems and wrap in newspaper. you can store them on a shelf in the lower level of the barn in a dark area and they will slowly ripen. Give the plants to the chickens, they usually love that. Also, poop on your eggs usually means the chickens should be de-wormed.
Re: Potatoes. Russet baking potatoes store best. We stored them in a room in the barn- hardware cloth on the bottom to keep diggers from coming up, and wood 1/2 walls on 3 sides. put down a layer of hay, a layer of dry potatoes with no gouge marks then another layer of hay, potatoes... until you have them all in and covered. The ones that were damaged while digging should be washed and either cooked/frozen or used immediately. If they are dug when the soil is damp you should put down a layer and let it dry before adding the next layer.
Wow you are most definitely turning that into a little paradise :-D
Really really would like a detailed vid on Ben's composting method and especially his sifter!! Pretty please?
Love see you you as a family and the farm progressing.
Things to plant and then they grow, you harvest and eat!!! Yea!!! So exciting to see how well you all have done.
you guys have the most obedient chickens ive ever seen...some of ours are very 'free spirited' and do whatever the heck they want...go where they want...jump the fence when they want.
I mark mine O and X on each side of my eggs so when I turn them I know they all got turned and keep a tablet with days for info about turning..temp...candling and stuff like that . Good luck with your eggs.
Ben, when you were driving the lawn mower and pulling the cart with the boys, I started laughing because it reminded me of a ride at Disney World. Meg, you get so excited when you talk about planting. 😊
If needing more compost look in your area for someone with a few horse. They are usually happy to find someone to take away their manure. Might be a little stall cleaning involved but good way to get some for free.
Be careful with getting horse manure. My friends had an unfortunate experience. The horses had been eating forage that had been contaminated with herbicide. Didn’t hurt the horses to eat it but it came out in their poop. All I’m saying if you bring compost from off farm, test it first buy planting some seeds in it and see if the plants come up healthy looking.
That's just the way my Dad taught me to plant potatoes. It is one of my fondest memories, digging up new potatoes with him.
One thing that is really helpful is to do some sort of irrigation, soaker hose with quick connect or get fancy. It’s quicker than hand watering and getting blistered. I love growing potatoes! 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
So cute with the boys riding behind Ben...reminds me of a duck and its ducklings.💙
Hey! Love your enthusiasm and your optimism. Have you consider raising quail? They are small, the cages are small, they don't eat too much, and the eggs are delicacies and expensive. and they lay A LOT of them!
Try the tire technique. Plant 3 or 4 inside a single tire full of soil. As it grows add a tire, more soil. Usually get to 4 or 5 tires high. End of season, knock over the tires. Easy.
Love the fact that your kids help you are so blessed.
It was a pleasure to watch the calm easy change over for the chickens you guys got this
It's all taking shape and looking good!
such a wonderful transformation in just ONE year! congratulations.
You guys are killing it
You have a lot of edible greens in your yard right now. My MomaGrant called it 'tonic salad'. She said it replaced your depleted vitamins after winter. Get a book on wild edibles. Also, leave your raspberry canes. They have lots of things that ease labor in animals and the leaves are edible but really good in tea. Love you guys. You were the first homesteaders that caught my eyes. I am about 130 miles west of you. We have a dry spell in August sometime if you are interested in rainwater catchment. Welcome to God's country===Western NC
Shout Out to those Boyz! Great to see them helping!
A broad fork and the super duper wagon are both on my wishlist. Come on anniversary! Y'all are all looking SO happy. Good luck w the giant garden and hatching chicks!
When my husband, planted potatoes, he made a mound of dirt for each potato in the furrow, it was so pretty. His garden had to be precise. At the time, I think it took his mind off of stress from his job.
Great time to have your episodes come out and shining a bit of light :) Thanks guys!
Yep...very productive!!! Looks good Ben and Meg😊 I start planting some of my seeds tomorrow......wooohooo. Meg, I made bread using your recipe. It's rising in the bread pan now as I type this comment, and then I need to bake them. I think I may have put just a bit too much flour, we'll see in the end.
OH how ive waited for these videos from y’all, there’s no such thing as too much garden ! 💜🌱✨
Hi Meg and Ben, you know in a short time you have got the farm up and running and it looks fantastic. I love the way Ben and the boys were getting the manure and riding back on the Lawn mower or tractor and the boys hitching a ride with him. Have a great day and I hope you enjoyed your burgers.
Y'alls Garden is looking amazing Meg! Great job Ben preparing the ground.
I truly get you meg when you say ....LOL.... WE can plant 100 tomatoes. That is exactly what I was thinking this year. I have so much space on our homestead that I dont know what to do....LOL...we are so thankful for that though because we came from a small space in the suburbs. I converted my front and back yard into garden space and grow tonnes of fruits, veggies and potatoes. This year we are so blessed with so much land.I love potatoes so this year we are growing 50 lbs of seed potatoes.I wish you all good luck with your potatoes. My trick is to plant them deep in a lot of loose compost and leaves mix together. Then I feed them with compost tea for the rest of the season.I always get a great harvest each year.
Your all doing a great job planting the gardens for fresh healthy food! Love your channel, be safe, stay healthy, may God Bess everyone, and help us all!
I can not imagine having some much land...its good... we try to carefully plant things around the house in the little space we have and we have lots planted I think...GOD bless you guys!
