  • From February 17 to March 16th, 1979, China staged a military incursion into Northern Vietnam. The video here is a report from Jim Laurie who visited the 'Invasion area' in late March 1979. By February 18th, Chinese forces with ground forces only (infantry, artillery, armor, no air power) had advanced eight kilometers into Vietnam along a broad front through 26 points of entry. Heavy Vietnamese resistance slowed the advance. The Vietnamese resorted to the guerilla tactics that had employed so successfully against the French and the Americans. They ceded low lying areas and mounted attacks from surrounding mountainous areas.
On March 4th the Chinese capture of the provincial capital of Lang Son about 20 kilometers from the Chinese border. Shortly after Beijing declared its "lesson" to Vietnam over and began withdrawing to Guangxi province. Historians are divided on the war's outcome. Vietnam's response was to step up military preparedness. Weaknesses in China's tactical preparation and training were exposed leading to a campaign in Beijing in the following years to "modernize" the Peoples Liberation Army. Vietnam was undeterred in its continued occupation of Cambodia which continued until 1988-89 assisted by Soviet Russian assistance. Ethnic Chinese residents of Vietnam joined the flood of refugees exiting Vietnam. Anti-Chinese sentiment increased; hostility to China apparent to visitors to Vietnam in 2016.

We Vietnamese have been too nice to you Chinese already but you Chinese have always wanted to conquer, assimilate and take over our beautify country for over a thousand year which is very wrong and evil. Which side won?
Well eventhough I am not a diplomat I'd say Vietnam won.
    Why?
The then Vietnamese regime/communist party was not replaced by one imposed by China, territory wasn't ceded to China and Vietnam continued to dominate and influence regimes throughout Indochina til this day.
Lastly, China retreated home to its borders not willingly, but because of Vietnamese resistance and fear it would get into a quagmire like the French and Americans before it fearing it would only be left to leave after heavy numbers of maimed, injured and killed, imprisoned or MIA.
These reasons are why I believe Vietnam can be said to have won this border war/conflict against China.
China hasn't shown any stomach to truly fight a war since the communist fought off Japan and their Chinese Puppet regime that subsequently reestablish itself in Taiwan.
We will see within the next ten years if China has the stomach to fight a war that it will surely lose and lose at great costs to its military might, human costs, infrastructure and most of all and importantly, its economy.
A war against Taiwan means a war against not only the U.S., but Japan and most likely Australia and even perhaps S. Korea.
    N. Korea may enter the fray, but it will have to really calculate whether the risk of defeat is worth coming to China's defense...defeat would mean no more communist regime in N. Korea and the South either absorbing most or all of the North.

According to General Ngu Tu Quan (伍修权), deputy commander-in-chief of the Chinese Liberation Army, the number of Vietnamese soldiers killed and wounded was 20,000, while the corresponding figure for China was 34,000. According to historian Gilles Férier, about 25,000 Chinese soldiers died and nearly 500 armored vehicles or artillery were destroyed. This number on the Vietnamese side was similar but a bit lower. Russell D. Howard believes that the Chinese army suffered 60,000 casualties, of which 26,000 died. Some other sources also agree with the Chinese casualty figure of at least 50,000. King Chen's source said that in major hospitals in Guangxi alone there were at least 30,000 Chinese wounded soldiers. In April 1979, Vietnam's People's Army Magazine estimated total Chinese casualties at 62,500 people. On the Vietnamese side, thousands of civilians died and were injured. According to Time magazine, less than 10,000 Vietnamese soldiers died (the Chinese side's figure was over 20,000). The Chinese side captured about 1,600 prisoners of war out of a total of more than 50,000 Vietnamese troops participating in the battle at the Lao Cai, Cao Bang, and Lang Son fronts.

China has no logistics system that can support troops more then 20 miles past their borders or over 30 days. The fact that only local Vietnamese forces stopped them shows the training level of the Chinese forces was under par. The quality of today's Chinese military is questionable because of corruption in the Communist Party.

Arsenal Vleonardo Winning the war is not how many enemies you killed but its whether you still have soldiers alive to do the next fighting. If we apply your equation of winning the war by who has more dead, then the Soviet army will still be the loser after capturing Berlin and forcing German army surrender. Soviet Union lost more than 25 million men while Germany lost only a small fraction of Soviet losses. Soviet Union still undisputed winner of WWII while Germany is clear loser.

    • @silentwatcher1455

Arsenal Vleonardo If that war continued, China could have captured Hanoi in few days while Vietnam regular army was away. Let the war continue for a month. China would probably lost 250,000 men but Vietnamese army and its population will cease to exist. Meaning Vietnam population is zero. While at Vietnamese China border a million Chinese soldiers are leisurely walking around waiting for orders to attack.

Israelis never asked for total surrender nor killed all Palestinians. Israelis just left and didn't stay long. The Israeli army can be mistaken for defeat but made a clear statement. Israel can anytime cause heavy destruction and heavy casualties on Palestinians. Same applied to Lebanon. This is very similar situation to China Vietnam border war. China can attack, wreck havoc and destruction to Vietnam at anytime and even capture Hanoi. Therefore China won the fight. Vietnamese are still daydreaming of victory.
