- A slew of actors have revealed just how little they've been paid for starring in films and tv shows that pay studio executives millions. Aussie actor working in Hollywood Zac Garred explains.
#WritersStrike #SAGAFTRA #Hollywood - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I did extra or background atmosphere for about 10 years while living in LA. We got paid at the time 40$ for the entire day whether you worked 2 hours or 13 hours. It’s the contract that we signed - and they worked us all day. And we were treated like cattle. Move here, move there, ok you’re fine - get lost. I dreamt of breaking into a larger role but never did. So I gave up to work a regular job, went to college and built my own life. The industry can be really hard when you’re not famous.
I did too from 1982 until 1990 we were paid terribly. I got my SEG and later SAG and we were still treated like sludge and without true representation. I did do some great stuff, but the dues were just a means to makes us broke and back down to the crappy 40.00 a day.
I like many of the American actors and English singers and performancers. they are so cool in the movies and onstage. However, outside they are down on earth as normal people like everybody else.
Yeah that was very smart of you. TBH if something isn't working out for you, then you need to pick another career/job. It's not just the entertainment industry that's getting slammed. There are far less jobs now due to automation, just go to your local bank and big box stores, where now there are plenty of self-checkouts and ATMs that are far more sophisticated than they were even 5 years ago. Even gas stations now have self-serve registers. More and more industries are becoming like this. Even the medical field. Time to invest in another career.
The industry gets a lot of labor for cheap selling dreams and fantasies to its workers as well as its audiences. It's the business of bullsh*t and if you're not selling it you're probably buying it, maybe even both.
If you were not in the union.
I guess someone should tell the actors that nobody is going to movie theaters now, dvd's and blu rays don't sell and most of the streaming channels are losing money. They picked an awful time to strike -- the industry is nearly dead already.
Do you remember when Crispin Glover's $765,000 lawsuit against Back to the Future Part 2 set a new precedent for the SAG-AFTRA on the policies for reusing old footage of actors in later movies and episodes? They need to make another new rule like that against the use of Artificial Intelligence to digitally insert actors into scenes for a one-time payment, and never hiring or paying them for anything ever again. July 25, 2023, 12:36am
I'm afraid you don't understand that they can just create digital extras using AI. They don't need to scan a person to create new 'extras'.
It's not hard to get people down on their luck to sign over rights for little or nothing, like service and homeless people, some already occasional actors, all with a dream of being seen. If push comes to shove, they can send out "talent scouts" with cameras, cash cards, and contracts to homeless encampment where many are more concerned about "getting well" for a little while than crossing picket lines.
That is why jet li turned down his role in the Matrix because they wanted to record and copy all his moves into a digital library.
Some of these poor people are struggling to make it on just a few hundred thousand a year! And, they have to do what they love for a living! It’s sick! How can you treat people like this who only want to entertain you and maybe diddle your kids every now and then. Something must be done to keep these gems of society above the poverty line!! I SuPPoRt teH AxTorz StrIkE!!
Exactly This comes off as spoiled.. my mom was literally paid the minimum wage allowed to be an extra and got paid $30 an hour to sit in a chair 13 hours a day, she was happy with it, in fact she said it pays dare I say *W E L L*
People just being greedy seeing other people who have more and going ‘that’s not fair!’ while having no empathy for people who have a lot *LESS* than them.. sad self centred world we live in, not just top down, human society is rotten to the core
Nobody pays to watch a movie or watches a show because of the ceos or executives.
They need the Teamsters President. Look at how fast UPS caved to reality.
Interesting interview 👍
It seems AI is not just a convenient tool but a troubling reality that affects many industries.
At the end of the day, it's not the technology... but the greed that drives decisions.
Losing Hollywood might be a good thing.
It’s been twenty five years since anything decent was created.
CGI is being heavily depended on. It made Hollywood lazy. Now they have an app for everything. We don’t even need to be alive to enjoy or suffer from it because they probably have an app for that too.
Let Hollywood sink. Let it go. It’s time to clean up Dodge. 🤧🙄
They really prey on the people trying to make it. It’s so sad that the people running the studios know that they can take advantage of people just trying to get their foot in the door.
Keanu was suchba saint when he gave part of his salary to the people working on Matrix. If everyone was like him i believe Hollywood would be a better place
He has always been humble, he still rides a bike and subway to many places and also lives in a regular home, nothing over the top, he truly is and awesome person
Greed will destroy America.
It’s already destroyed.
Don't you mean HAS? 😊
It has and is
Why don't the SAG AFTRA people establish their own studios and companies?
Because ironically they lack the imagination to do so.
It's a trinity... #3 you must ALSO have distribution...
The only company that has an agreement with the actors and writer's unions is A24. That company is dependent upon the other media companies for everything other than theatrical distribution.
if you don't make enough, change your career
What people are not realising about AI and scanning actors faces is that they don’t have to actually use ANY ONE SINGLE ACTOR’S SCAN. They could use 100s of actors features to create a single AI generated actor. You won’t be able to claim any compensation because you won’t know how much of your likeness was used
That's where Government needs to step in to create laws that protect the person's image.
Why do they need to scan anyone! Just conjur up computer actors!
@@donaldgibson8247 Yeah that's what I was thinking. They can just generate a random image and use that. No need to hire any real actors.
Are they not capable of forming their own studio? They have the actors and the writers, can be or find the directors. They need to make a few low-budget-yet-popular films, make their own money and be their own studio.
I am NOT saying they're wrong for the strike.
That's the real question. Watching the Nanny and her friends complaining about CEO corporate fat cats. Why not start your own production and distribution companies and you can writers and actors however much you want.
@@dexterwestin3747not realistic, it takes a lot of money to do this because if it was so easy everyone would just start their own
@@immealldayeveryday9425 Tom Cruise did it and the collective power of the SAG members on strike have far more sway, influence and resources than one man.

We support SAGAFTRA. Keep fighting. Do not give up!
I'm a comical leading man. I am SAG. Every agent and talent manager claims "they are not looking for new clients at this time." I support the strike over low pay. However, I want to make sure, I am not striking to help movie stars only.
Tom cruse will fill the industry up with scientologists
Time to stop paying over-paid actors like Tom Cruise & Brad Pitt 20 million per movie and spread that around the entire cast. You don't see Tom Cruise on the picket lines. If there was more transparency over how much people in the same production were being paid, I'm sure there would be an uproar!
To be fair, Cruise also produces and has a big involvement in his movies, so he is not just acting in the movie.
@@dhenderson1810 yeah he's different from regular actors same goes for vin diesel and seth Rogen most actors will just be background pieces
No actor has been paid 20 million in salary since the 90’s. Jim Carrey is probably the last.
@@ktoth29 Apparently Margot Robbie was paid 12.5 million for Barbie. I wouldn't brag if I were her right now. I think they should have delayed the release until the strike is over.
@@ktoth29 Cruise probably makes that, but he also executive produces and buys the rights to Franchises such as "Mission Impossible".
Also, apparently Cruise had a major involvement in getting "Top Gun Maverick" to the screen, so he would get at least 20 mill, but it would be for all his roles on the film, not just his acting.
The greed of studios has always been a burden on the craft.
If it’s SAG’s rule about having to make $26K+ to qualify for health insurance, then that’s something to change too. Many people outside of the entertainment industry make more than that and get no insurance. So while I agree writers should make more, my pity only goes so far.
So incredibly sick of these Hollywood people who think they are the voice of the general public. Can’t stand them. Stand in line!
I'm not happy about writers and actors being out of work but I'm more than ecstatic to see Hollywoke burn to the ground. Actors and writers need to start seeking out independent film makers. MAKE STORY TELLING GREAT AGAIN!!!
A few thoughts.
1. Actors were declared essential during the pandemic yet the lady running a food stand next door to a set wasn’t.
2. I saw a video of Jon Cryer on the picket lines. He made ~650k an episode on two and half men.
3. Pareto predicted this in the 1890s
4. Make something entertaining and I might consider buying it.
Take this for what you will.
So just because Jon Cryer happens to be one of the better paid actors in the industry, he can't come out to support his colleagues in their efforts to receive better wages?
That's like saying that a shift leader shouldn't walk out with their shift to stage a protest against the restaurant or retail establishment they all work in, just because their rank is higher and so is their pay...
Two and a Half Men was Cryer's biggest success in his career. Nothing else he did in 30+ years in film/TV came close to that. Hundreds of other actors aren't that lucky, even when they're on "successful" Netflix shows.
Maybe they should go get real jobs and see what hard work really is 😂😂😂😂😂
A lot of them did which is why they are trying to make it in acting they hate a real job but not every body going to make it in acting
Times have changed and the gig is up (no pun intended). Many factors led them to the place they are in today. These actors and writers will have to look into other career options. Even the A-list actors will eventually encounter these very issues. This happens in a lot of industries. Jobs change, demand changes, and people are forced to reinvent themselves and go into other careers in order to support themselves. The truth is, entertainment industry is not essential work and many people found other ways to entertain themselves during the pandemic. The consumer has a lot of options now.
I agree - it happens to most of us in our lifetimes. Times change and we're forced to adapt. I don't see how most of them will ever be able to make what used to be "the norm". The entertainment industry is changing. I don't have cable tv because I stream everything and the only movie I've gone to see in the past 4 years is The Sound of Freedom. I wait until they're streaming. I didn't see them taking a stand for the millions of people that lost their businesses during covid. Those people had to adapt and many of them are still trying to recover :/
@@PamLPam 💯. You’re right, they didn’t care or protest when small business owners were forced to shut down and we’re losing everything and when Joe Schmo was told his/her job was “non-essential”. What’s an even bigger slap in the face is how they threw all their support behind “peaceful protestors” during the summer of hell and even bailed the rioters out of jail. I have no sympathy for Hollywood. When you throw a boomerang, it always comes back to you.
@@viktoriebartosova3798 I agree, they are terrible shows now. But when the average American was told during the pandemic by our govt that their job was “not essential” and they were forced to not work, close their businesses and struggled to support themselves and families, while these self entitled Hollywood actors were allowed to play dress up and make believe, it changed something in the American people. I’m not supporting any strike in which the the laborer plays make believe all their career. Sorry, but their job is not a real job, it’s only entertainment and a person can find 1 million in 1 ways to entertain themselves these days including playing with poop on a stick.
Only the main stars make the most. Some ppl complain about $1 residual, but fail to mention 100's of 1000's off other projects.
Time for actor's to find actual work, since this country has a worker shortage.
I think before we care about Hollywood we should take care of teachers and first responders.
Is that really true? 80% of SAG members don't make $26,000 a year so they don't qualify for health insurance?
Vin Diesel made over 60 million for saying i am Groot, way underpaid he'd be better off working 40 hrs a week i guess for minimum wage
These actors and actresses should be starting up their own things to generate revenue: put on plays, CZcams, etc. Show these production companies you don't need to depend on them!
Seems like the perfect time to start a new movie studio and hire “free agents” to be in their movies.
Why don't musicians get this kind of support and airtime when they speak out? Or athletes and models? Why don't all in the entertainment industry ban together and support each other?
These fat cats at the top that bring no talent to this industry are the problem. This strike is important, without the writers and actors, you don’t have entertainment. That is the problem with all these over paid CEOs, that regardless of failing, get their bonuses. All these companies are standing on the backs of the workers that make them the money. I think unions are going to make a major comeback to the workers in North America. Keep up the good fight, the future workers in your industry will be standing on your shoulders and will thank you for your sacrifice. In solidarity ✊🏼
Agree. Thats Capitalism. 😅
Yes, I've thought and hoped this is a comeback for unions!! 💪
except the writer were offered access to the stock option plan that regular employee gets. The same stock options that the CEO uses to get their "insane" pay. And they rejected it because they wanted to be paid first.
It's the same as the music industry
i’m watching this on youtube right now, who gets the youtube ad dollars at the project?
But people in unions don't support each other as they should. Once they get theirs, the tune out and ignore other Americans with the same issues.
It’s the same for indie filmmakers who have no idea how much their films are making on the platforms. We need a law where a third party oversees the analytics of every platform so there is fairness.
bob iger[s base salary was $3 million, and he earned a cash bonus of $22.9 million. most of his salary is stock options. That way less than the top actors get PER MOVIE.
The top actors are 1% of all in the industry. And there's also Netflix, Sony, Paramount, Comcast, and Warner Bros Discovery.
@@fromthehaven94 and what do you think the presidents of each of these companies. The top 0.1% of the employees. Apple to Apple comparison.
@@aaronjjacques No, there was a published listing of the earnings of the last years of each of the media companies CEO. The companies that collectively control what all actors get, including the handful of "top actors" who at minimum get paid for one movie. And money isn't the only issue that the actors and writers are striking over.
@fromthehaven94 yeah I saw the list published by the union. They COMBINED salary and options together to come up with the number. They are the top 0.1% of the EMPLOYEES of the companies. Either compare Apple to Apple. Aka regular employee vs regular actors or superstar vs presidents.
@fromthehaven94 most of the "earning" came from beating estimates. If those actor took 15% and contributed to the matching stock plan they would share in that upside.
I do not have to see a new tv show or film until after the writers and actors and everyone else that works on movies gets a fair deal.
Damn tired of the rich exploiting the workers to get even richer while the workers starve or are homeless. Forget that. This time the workers should get a fair deal or they can strike until the CEO's of all the relevant corporations get fired for losing so many billions for their greed and stupidity.
Without the talent, the creativity and the passion of these people, the CEO's and their 'shareholders' would make zero revenue.
Let us, the consumers of the workers passion and creativity remind the rich that we don't need them, they need us so give the workers a fair wage and decent benefits, it will cost them very little.
Do not and see how life looks in the unemployment line.
It's a cursed business...

@@imperialstrategies6065 Yup Woke falsehood, it's more politics than art and looking out for each other to sustain the movie industry.
That's intense if the studios get that contract, they can just reuse their likeness mannerism, speech and movements as CGI with AI and it will be indistinguishable from the AAA Hollywood Star like that Deepfake Tom Cruise but pay no residuals to the actors X-D. The vice of greed, the executives know that actors grow old and will be replaced by younger ones but if they continue using today's actor's and it's all about the money not art anymore, very few future AAA actors will be produced.
Honestly the actors should just form their own studios, each would be an owner but then later they might become whom they despise (this was what happened to George Lucas and Lucasfilms when he became big).

This beast of a conflict that streaming services created is why I am happy that Roku is the only digital service with streaming rights to 2 Broke Girls. HBOmax, amazon prime and Appletv+ used to stream 2 Broke Girls, but I have to guess that Whitney Cummings and Michael Patrick King saw this strike coming (with no specific year in mind) and after those services' first streaming licenses expired, they decided not to sell another license to any streaming service except for the free one, Roku after learning how little they were paid in residuals and royalty checks from 2BG's initial run on those other streaming services. Whitney was probably smart enough to prefer having fans of her show just watch it the old-fashioned ways, syndication and buying physical media home video releases, because her cast and writers still get paid from that, and because she knew firsthand how streaming services would take away from it. Hollyweird is full of NARCISSISTS and is rife with drug addicts, alcoholics, perverts, deviants and PEDOPHLES. Those people sold their souls not for money but for FAME. I support the actors and writers. I don’t have a problem not watching tv or using streaming services. I cut the cord years ago and just pay for 3 streaming services now. However, I barely watch them most of the time. I had already start thinking about pausing or dropping these services for a bit for that reason. Now that I am aware of the strike, I may go ahead and do it. Maybe the strikers should ask their supporters to do this pause/temporarily drop their streaming service) to help them make a point. If they do, they should try to do it in an organized and strategic way and see just how powerful of an impact it might have on the current situation. Maybe folks aren’t willing to give their streaming services up permanently, but doing it for a short period of time is doable for many. If a large enough group of folks do it for a period of time or even on an ongoing rolling bases it might send a message that the studio executives and streaming services can’t ignore. I would do this to show my support. Anyway, just an idea I thought was worth putting out there if it hasn’t been thought of already.
Actually from what I've read until now, boycott will be counterproductive, because it will show that the products are not needed (not watched) and the stats on new shows will go down, proving they should not be renewed. UNTIL the striking guilds actively ask for boycott, it's better to keep the contracts BUT also watch the c...p out of everything they offer, to produce traffic.

Discussions, like those at Swingers Diner on Beverly Drive, have been taking place all over Hollywood. Recently, at Jay London's comedy show inside Kanter's Kibbutz Room on Fairfax in Hollywood the harsh realities of the WGA SAG-AFTRA strike have settled in as well.
Whether it's Swingers or Kanter's Kibbutz Room, until Fran Drescher gets the Writers Strike resolved, the only people affording Swinger's Breakfast Granola or Kanter's Corned Beef Reubens and pickles will be the AMPTP studio chiefs, agency reps and the occasional mail room bootlickers. I find it humorous and quite ironic that the “actors” that make tens of millions per film are the ones the mainstream media goes to for a sound bite on the disparity of income. When the “A” list actors stand up and demand lower pay so that the people at the bottom can get a raise, I’ll have faith in the industry. If one makes less than $26K per year as a professional in an industry where other people on the same project make hundreds of times more than you, you need to rethink your career path because you’re being taken advantage of.

The Australian housing market/real estate was cooling off and correcting from 2016 right up until 2019 - and then they acted. This is well documented.
In March 2020 several taxpayers funded "housing protection schemes" were enacted, things such as slashing interest rates to almost zero, allowing early access to superannuation, "homebuilder" and other renovators' programs, increased first homebuyers grants in addition to pre-existing investor protections such as negative gearing.
Since 2022, increasing interest rates are being accounted for and countered by unprecedented amounts of mass immigration in order to prevent any price falls through artificially generated demand and therefore artificial shortages. They do not want the correction that started in 2016 after the end of the mining boom to repeat and they are making sure it doesn't - at our collective burden and cost.
