    I've only been watching Mustie for a few months now, but I'm already addicted to his videos. I genuinely get excited when something new shows in my sub box, is this normal?

      VERY normal. Mustie1 has a real flair for explaining things in a real-world way with humor and humility thrown-in. Entertains and educates at the same time. I’ve had the same experience as you, and have been binge-watching his videos for the last month or so to where I’m considering cancelling my cable subscription! Lol

    I would split this into two lots. Sell the engine as a conversion for a normal bike and the recumbent as a bike in the best state possible. Recumbents are pretty fast without the motor and tend to be ridden by the types that would not thank you for the engine?

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie Před 7 lety +2

      +Andrew Wilson I agree, it would potentially maximise the return on them and if someone does want the bike and the motor they can always buy the two together. I must admit that engine installation does look rather Heath-Robinson and might put a lot of people off what appears to be a very nice and good quality bike. I think the gears still need a little adjustment as it sounds like the chain is still rubbing the derailleur a bit much, but that could just be an effect of the sound on the video...

    • @smokyofstormwind420
      @smokyofstormwind420 Před 7 lety +2

      yeah I think you're right, plus the engine would make the bike less balanced with a higher center of gravity, your weight plus the engine makes it very top heavy, take the engine off and put it on something else.

    • @ChristopherHayniedd980
      @ChristopherHayniedd980 Před 7 lety +3

      Andrew Wilson Totally agree with you. incumbent bikes are like regular bicycles they don't hold their value. That bike was probably over a$1000 bucks new. The conversion on the other hand is worth some $.

    • @xw6968
      @xw6968 Před 7 lety +1

      Andrew Wilson agree, i dont understand that engine at the back as its a fast and easy bike. All the little things on it like rope tapes bottles etc shows this man used it as a driver.

    Very impressive mechanical intuition on the rear axle, brakes, shifter, and reversed front wheel. Front tire is installed backwards ("v" of tread should point forward on bicycle tires). Do not rely on the reflective strip to check tire seating as it is often painted off center. The tube shouldn't be balled up on the front tire. I'd inspect it - either weak spot, incorrect size, or installation. As others are saying, almost all cyclists interested in this recumbent will discount it with the engine. It will be a rare person that values the combination higher. You bought quite the bargain. Thank you.

    Hi Mustie,
    Been enjoying your videos . Streamed to my TV via Roku Player. I was watching Jay Lenos garage and they have something they call derelict cars and they coated original old Buicks with linseed oil right over the old paint and rust. It really brings out the patina and makes it shine great. You can see it on you tube under Jay Leno derelict cars. You should coat your VW lumber truck in linseed oil. Remember no smoking when applying linseed oil unless you want to add a fire patina.

    We have a station (one) in this town of over 3 hundred thousand folks that sells non alcohol gas. The price is usually a dollar higher that the cheap stuff. A lot of Boat owners chose to run this gas. I don't, I'm cheap, I do run, burn, out all gas in every small engine I own including the boat. I do find I have to replace the fuel pumps in my cars and trucks at around a hundred thousand miles. I do so enjoy your videos. Thanks, Dr. D

    you did it again by bringing back some old memories from my cycling days in the late 80s. I was a long distance rider on a $400 mountain bike with lots of modifications. They were just coming out with those index shifters but the old school ones had a huge flexibility. It came stock 21 speed but I got a modified to 24 speed. Discovering a fourth chain ring for the front about 18 teeth stretching that front derailer to its limits! By opening up the shifter and with a few tweaks inside I was able to get it to cover all four rings's. When on the smallest one on the front I could only use about three on the back but the torque was ridiculous climbing over about anything. Replacing the ball bearing in the crank with needle bearings that had an oil reserve between them. Almost 0 resistance with that kind of set up but I never could get it to totally stop leaking. We use candle wax on the cables Before inserting them in the housing and it also helps keep the dirt out. They had some nut Certs that a bicycle shop could add a water bottle anywhere you wanted on a bike. I had three on the frame and two on the handlebars just to survive the Arizona desert! You also mention a few videos speaking of rubberized parts getting hard and that's extremely accelerated in this climate.. Cars don't rust out they just dry out and become brittle today's cars won't survive it decades from now.

    The guide roller for the chain has a bracket sticking up. Turn it around so it points down and that is what you run the brake and gear cables through. It's on the right hand side and if it was the other way up it would space the cables down away from the chain.

  • @ChristopherHayniedd980

    Never forget the cable is connected inside their too so it will have tension as you pull it apart. My favorite bike part to work on was those old 3-5 speed hubs talk about alot of parts. The cool thing was when my brother was really young early 70's he bought a universal repair manual for bicycle and it had all makes and models for those pain in the ass hubs. The rest of the bike is cake to fix.

  • @VeryHairyKrishna

    Agree with the others who said to remove the engine kit from that recumbent. Those kits work good for driving the front wheel of an adult trike, in case you ever score one at a yard sale.

  • @pauljs75
    @pauljs75 Před 7 lety +4

    Front wheel is on the wrong way... (Done that myself before.) Speedometer magnet is the clue, but so is the front axle skewer. (Cam lever should always fold towards the back.)
    Also index shifters (in some form or other) can be a pain. Old-school friction shifters are always easier to deal with.
    And with that extra long chain, I'm surprised there's no extra tensioner or idler to keep the chain off of the stay. That slapping can't be good.

    the V brake system has a spring adjustment under the arms against the frame think of it as a spring preload the screw on the side is a fine adjustment the spring adjustment is 3 holes next to the bolt hole each hole is a greater spring tension which of course shoves the brake arm away from the wheel more firmly also makes them harder to squeeze ive had a couple of the tiny pins rust or shear an the brakes become limp on the return side unscrewing the main pivot bolt (has locktight on threads as they tend to back off even with it due to the pivot getting dirty /rusty) realign the pin on the brake arm to the hole an put screw back in pivot good for older weak springs to get actin back in the brakes return

    I had a recumbent of this design. All components worked well but I had several problems with the bike. #1 , nearly impossible to look over your shoulder to see behind you. If you try to look back, the bike loses stability. Mirrors would help but I don't like to rely solely on mirrors. #2, The placement of the handlebars makes it necessary to release the handlebar to swing your leg out when coming to a stop. There are kits to mount handlebars above your legs. :) #3, Holding your legs up, and straight out, on the pedals required too much effort. Every bump would make my leg or legs drop off, then repositioning my feet was tricky, on the move. Clip pedals on THIS bike? Deadly. I sold it with less than 100 mi. on it.

      I have almost the identical bike except mine has rear suspension as well. It's even the same color. I also have a couple of ActionBent recumbents. The main difference is the handle bars. On the Vision, the handles are parallel to the ground putting your hands are into an awkward position. On the ActionBent, the handles are perpendicular to the ground putting your hands into a much more natural position plus this position allows the rider to pull back against the handles when pedaling uphill.

      Strange I have never had that reaction in traffic and I ride all kinds of different bents. There are to be honest some bents out there that should be on the seawall or a closed track as they are far too low. The Vision takes time to get used to and a couple weeks is not enough time. As someone mentioned his feet fell off the pedals , well clip in and reduce the tension to very little on your pedals if you are not comfortable clipped in.Once I get past 60 rpm I have to be clipped in and when I am up in the 130 rpm range ,albeit not for long , I am happy that I am clipped in.

    Looking at the tread, the front wheel was the right way round (or at least the tyre was), but the magnet was on the wrong side, for that kind of tyre, you want the tread set so that looking at the wheel top-down, you see arrows pointing forwards, that way the grooves are aligned so that the tyre pushes any water on the road or path surface away, with it backwards, it pushes the water towards the middle thus compromising grip in poor weather... :)

    By now you may have found out that Shimano rapid fire shifters seize if not used for some time, the problem is the grease oxidises and stops a tiny pawl from engaging in the ratchet mechanism, the cure is exactly what you did! Shoot it with WD40 or similar and work it free.
    The plastic screw you took out isn’t an oil point, it’s where you change the inner cable without having to dismantle the shifter 😉

    I just recently bought a Vision R40 and love it (my first recumbent). It looks like mine is older than this one ... and this one may be a higher-end model ... 44? 50?. Based on a table of components by year, I think mine is between '98 and '01. No suspension, which I think I would like as I really feel the cracks in the road. I think Vision closed down in '04. The bikes still sell well, as they were well-made and nearly everything on them was basically standard, so replacement of most parts shouldn't be a problem.
    This one looks very nice.

    Nice bike...
    With a bit of love it could have been a good ride.
    It's all XT components...
    Look on the internet.
    It's all there.

    It appears to me that the brakes / gear changers are on the wrong side. Normally, front on the right and back on the left. Also you would then be able to see the indicators on the gear changers. At the moment the face away from the rider.
    I used to watch someone ride one of these most days when I commuted in a busy part of the UK. I admired his bravery !!

      The shifters and brakes are on the correct sides. Right for Rear. Maybe you come from a motorcycle background where foot brake controls rear and since clutch is on the left, the front brake is on the right.

    This type of valve is called prestavalve. Looks like chain is out of whack, pulleys are twisted upside down, chain should run higher so it wont rub on handlebars. Also about that gas engine, move those bottom flat bars on the ouside of top one (those closer to engine) it should free it up a bunch.

    Flip the bracket for the idler pulley (chain) upside down to secure the wires for the rear gear and brake

    for what it's worth, that engine bracket going to the rear wheel axel is caddy-wompus, the bolts connecting the left/right brackets are not in similar holes

    28:50 -ish... no, look at a normal bicycle: all the brake and shifter cables are routed along the handlebars, then go in front of the head tube before going to the frame/forks.
    On a recumbent bike this assembly is flipped, which means, as seen from the camera's perspective, they need go under the head tube, not between it and the chain.
    Typing this as I watch, so you may figure this out later and adjust, but: just in case

    I got scared when you started taking that gear shifter apart, lucky it didn't explode! They just need a bit of lube every now and then :) But you figured that out!

    V brake springs system have 3 anchor points where the coil can sit, yours looked like it was on center one, could make it tighter by moving to other hole, vs bending parts. The aluminium knee on the side of the bike looks like it might fold the other way possibly. Also _maybe_ a lever on that system to push down to engage the engine instead of cable mess? Crazy system, in most states _any_ gas motor up to 49cc needs a drivers liscence, some need plates etc (Pa), Alabama forget it totally. Florida over 49==motorcycle, endorsement and turn signals etc, where's the VIN? homebuilt? wow...... no thanks. my bikes are electric.
