Thanks for this super useful video. I might have to do a Y, and I maybe totally Ok with that given how it will be all setup on the house.
Ok, I’m happy to know, at least you were informed and accept the limitations.
Great video definitely save me from buying some aftermarket wise that don’t seem to be able to work. I’m gonna make my decision since it’s permanent hang the lights and then see if it’s worth it for me but great video. Great explanation thank you.
This was perfect time for this video. I just bought the eufu lights similar to govee and need to split the lights because of the small peaks on the roof line I assume the same results even when you use WLED as the software
The results should be the same with any addressable pixels regardless of brand.
Thanks so much, the exact kind of info I needed. Duplicating non pro here I go!
Sounds like an ideal use case for the roof in 0:10, as long as you space the lights on the shorter length closer together. The lights would change in sync above and below that window.
Thanks for this great video! What happens in this example:
A splits in B and C.
B has 10 pixels, C has 20
Sequence is set to jump 1 at a time as you have shown in your video. After it gets to # 10 (end of B), what happens?
- B goes dark while C continues to 11, 12, 13. When C comes back to 10, B starts again
- B bounces back to 9, 8 7 while C continues to 11, 12, 13
- B and C bounce back to 9, 8, 7 and C 11, 12, 13 stay dark
Thank you so much for informative video. Can you do a Y split and then merge it? Example I have two triangles connected with straight line in between. If I split on first triangle, merge it, split again for second triangle. Will it work?
Can you do a video on the Eufy lights and how to add/ extend beyond 100ft (using 2 kits)?
Thank you for all the info you have put out on this product. I have a question,
I plan on putting a “command center” style panel to have power, ac adapters, controllers all in one spot) in my attic to control my Govee lights and the fish the wire through the soffit to begin installing the lights. I only plan to install lights on the front (54.5’) and back of the house (42’) with no lights on the sides.
I have a Pro 100’ kit and purchased an extra AC Adapter and controller off of eBay. My plan is to have run the front and back off of separate power and controllers. In order to centrally locate the command center I need to extend the wire out of the controller by about 30’ - 40’. That would make the back light length be about 92’ max. Do you think that will work?
Thanks
I think it will work, but you should do a bench test on the ground before you start drilling holes and standing on the ladder.
Thanks for the helpful video. Question if you don't mind. At 3:!2 you extend to another string of lights after the split and it doesn't work. If I'm understanding it correctly, after the split you can only have one string?
I did that to show the app was configured for only two strings. But I could get the third string to light when connected from the wye because it’s really a clone of the second string.
great video. I just ordered my pro 200 since there is a phenomenal Mothers Day sale this weekend. When using the Y's, are they already made with one female and the two males for the y or did you have to modify the splitter? I havent received mine yet so dont know how it looks stock out of the box. Also what is your recommendation for a 3 ft deadspot where I need to backtrack. I am thinking of using butt connectors and 20g wire to add like a 4ft blank run. Thanks for your help
That was a hack using parts included in the kit. Govee doesn’t make nor condone the use of Y splitters.
With the 150ft box of lights can you put both extension cord together to make a long extension cord?
I was waiting for you to do the 5-second reset after hooking up the Y-splitter with both branches of lights, but you didn't. Does that change anything?
Interesting video. What is the wire gauge you used for the "Y" connector and did you use solid or stranded wire?
I am not sure if I missed this or not but can you tell me if you can run more than a single light set off the Y branch. So say I have 3 groups of lights and another 3. Can i connect both sep sets of 3 to the Y point and all those lights after the Y would work, obviously a mirror of themselves?
Could I do Y split off of the middle of the jumper cable? Im thinking that will make both strands after the jump do the same thing?
So I am trying to figure out a downside to this. I have a basic 2 level house. Top and bottom runs only differ due to gables on top. I was thinking of splitting the signals at the beginning of the run and run 3 sets below and 4 sets up top. Any reason one would want them to chase in a circle around bottom or top of one side of the house and then to the opposite (top bottom) to the other side rather than just a sweep across the house on both floors?
So after the Y connection can you continue one leg with more light sections ? I would be adding two or three more sections to one of the legs after the Y is installed .
I am about to try this. The split is on the front porch. I think the pattern will look good with 100" going in each direction. Would the ysplitter make them run away and run into each other?
Do you think ot would work to do a Wye Connector coming off the power supply/control box and split to start 2 separate lines. One line would be 140' the second is 120'
will this work if one side of the split of lights continues longer than the other side of the split? we have a spot where the roof line splits and need 3 strands on the lower to go across the garage and only 1.5 strands to do the peak above the garage. (I have the pro lights that can be cut)
Can you manage more the one 200ft strip in govee app and have them grouped? Says my home requires 500 ft of lights and I purchase two 200 and one 100 strip.
I’ve never done it, but my understanding is you can group multiple kits to behave as one.
Hey brother, I have a 200ft pro kit and came up Short 30ft to complete line around my house. I bought 2 extra strands on ebay. How can I complete my house using these ? I never used any split or extensions since it was a straight around install ? Thanks and great work u do
Maybe try to do a power injection somewhere near 75% region, I did several 10’ jumps with 200’ pro kit and had no problems so maybe you just need a couple amps boost.
Would I be able to use the WAGO splicing 3-conductor? instead of using the Govee one?
If I'm understanding this correctly, a segment of lights coming off the Y can't have any additional lines afterwards in sequence? Only 1 length of lights is functional on the Y?
So if I split right at the start of power source with Y splitter can I have two 150ft?
since the original version has a 150ft max will the Y split make it two 150ft making total 300ft
No, the power supply is only meant for 150’ max. If you’ve got two sets, install them independently and link them in the app. No need for the splitter.
We have a Ranch house with a dormer over the garage and soon to have a split dormer/roof over the front porch and bay window. (small roof over a porch sharing the same left side as the dormer over the house) I thought about adding the "Y" so the dormers had the same left to right pattern as the straight line of the ranch. But I'm not sure if that would be a waste of lights and look cool enough. Any ideas?
I think you should decide where to put the lights before you think about wiring.
I suggest you post a photo of your house on Reddit /r/Govee and ask their advice.
Would there be any issues with putting 2 Y splits in the same circuit? or how about a 3 way split instead?
Can you split right after the power source? So instead of power > 1 string > y adapter > 2 strings. Can you do power > y adapter > 1 string left > remaining strings right.
@@handydadtvthis was my next question. Glad you answered this already
How is this technically permanent though? Is it because the direction of the connectors? Is the connectors the only thing that determines electrical flow through the strands? I would think just splice in a different connector and be on your way?
@PMPerformance I wouldn’t splice unless you absolutely have to, but you don’t need a connector at all. You can cut and splice the wires and use solderless waterproof connectors. You just need to make sure to connect the same wires together. The one with the tiny stripe is ground. The middle is data. The other side is +36V. Mixing them up could ruin your lights.
I'd like to know how Govee got the curtain lights to function properly as when I look at them it appears there is a "Y" at the top of each down string...
I'm trying to figure out if these lights would work for me. I have the first floor connected to the garage, then I have the 2nd floor with a peak and the attic level has a big peak. So it's basically 3 levels .
Yup did this with my own diy y-splitter with the non pro lights on my house last weekend. You don't need the pro version.
Worked perfect for pairing a separate strand over my garage below the roofline row of lights, and sequences perfectly.👍
@RanAn That’s fine. The shorter one will mimic whatever the longer one does.
Hi, thx for the helpful video in case i need to do something like that Y to finish my house. I tried to ask a question earlier but i dont think i did it right, ive never posted anything before. My question is, i have the govee original 150' and in the APP it only has 9 segments, i need to go about 165' to finish my house, do you know if its possible to add a 10th segment? I tried it yesterday (last night) and that last segment didn't light up. I was hoping it was possible to change a setting in the APP somehow. Thanks for any help.
Hi, thank you for answering back, 2 more questions, hope you get time to answer....do you think govee will have come up with a driver (for the original set) that can handle up to 200' (like the pro set)?...And could a pro driver (up to 200') be used with the original set to allow the original to go up to 200'? Thx again.
@user-zw5mj2sf9h No and no. They engineered these kits for simplicity (no power injection). If you need to go longer, buy two kits and link them in the app.
Thank you again....your a good help. I'll look into that!!
Or maybe i can run that Y splitter off the first segment, and then use the extension piece in the kit to get up to that last 10 ish feet of lights I need. It's on the side of my house so that last 10' of lights is not in the front to be seen as much, and seeing your video, I understand it will be in sync with the first segment for its operation.(if possible) Last lil question (and thank you for your time) do you think that will be too much total length for the driver to handle? 160' of lights and 2 extensions. I think it might be and I probably will need another set.
@user-zw5mj2sf9h Should work, just don’t run them at full brightness or it could overload the power supply, which is sized for 150’ max.
I have the 100ft govee pro lights.
I cut 2 lights from new strand to add lights onto a corner, then added 12ft blank extension cord to it, then on the other side added the rest of previously cut strand but lights conected to extension cord don't work😪
Did they work on the ground when you tested them? Go into settings and reset the length. If that doesn’t help, double check the splicing connector. Make sure you stripped enough wire.
@handydadtv yea all the ligjts worked before. Is just after cutting it and adding 12ft extwnsion they don't work, well only the ones after extension cord. I been playing with app and when going into settings it ask me how many green lights so I put 4 the it ask if I cut the ligjts I said yes then it ask how many rwd ligjts I said 2 then it stars calibratin and thas about it but can't find where te twll the app the lenght of ligjts. O have the pro
@futbol1972 Sounds like you’re doing everything right. Try a different extension?
Does anyone knows a 3rd party extension that I can use instead of cutting the wire? I have a 150 ft
Interesting , but NO. I see no need to have two strands doing exact same thing. MAYYYYYBE if you had a LARGE home and put them on opposite sides of house or a barn etc. That’s a MAYBE at best. I’ll follow directions and try not to customize anything in setup. Good video.
I agree. It could be more work to do, but wiring end to end is the better option.
Where did you get the extra ends to make a Y?
I split my lights now none of them work 😢
I did that too now none of my lights work 😐 I'll have another go at it when it stops raining. ALso I caught from you video that the systems might need a reset by pressing and holding th button on the controller.
Also, make sure you connected the respective wires together and in the right direction.
What do you mean by "right direction"@@handydadtv ? Also, thanks so much for your help! I was freaking out a bit thinking I'd destroyed my lights until I found your video.
@thatMikeMurphy Addressable pixel strings are directional and can’t be reversed. Before you cut off any connectors, make sure you mark which end goes towards the controller.
I just bought the 150ft set of the original Govee permanent outdoor lights off Amazon for 299.99. They should be here Tomorrow. Now I’ll have to figure out how to put them up around my trailer lol
What if you y it from the power source
If you split the line immediately out of the controller, say on the corner of your house, and go in two different directions, each of those branches will do the same effects. Always.
@@handydadtv Thanks for the video, do you mean that this would still do the same mirroring as you showed in the video?
That’s not true. Each individual light is numbered. All you have to do is go to the DIY section of the app and you can customize it exactly how you want it. They will never do the exact same thing, unless you programmed to do the exact same thing.
Sorry but you’re wrong. The lights are not numbered. They just consume one byte from the data string and send the rest down the line. If you split the data, the lights on both sides of the split are cloned.
Want me to show you the numbers under the 3M tape? take a piece of 3m off
If you split them they 100% do mirror one another. I just did an install with 2 splits.
Really enjoyed your video. We have done a few test ourselves and found out that when trying to spot light the Y-split, it doesn’t respond independently. You have just proved that. Keep up the great work. 🤝
Thanks so much 😊
