what a lot of people don’t get is that it’s actually pretty difficult to find not only people who resemble the characters but _also_ people who can actually act the part and do the stunts. they can’t just pickup a cosplayer from the street and put them in a show like this.
@@juicebox7372 you want the actors to alter their bodies for temporary role? there's also like some big connotations that come with an actor darkening their skin for a performance 💀
The impression I got as I watched it is that the Sokka actor actually portrayed Sokka pretty well- he's salvaging the mediocre writing. The Ozai actor is actually making Ozai somewhat intimidating even without the camera work tricks that the original Ozai had to make him feel more intimidating. The Zuko actor is doing okay- he's not super intimidating, but I'm not sure that's really his fault- what with his baby face and all. Azula... Someone missed the mark with her. She's scary because of how composed and competent she is. I understand that they're trying to plant the seeds of her going off the rails, but it just doesn't hit right if we don't see the frightening perfection first. I don't know if it's an actor problem or a writing problem though. For Aang and Katara, I'm also not sure if it's an acting or writing problem. I know that the writing doesn't take the time to develop the relationships between the characters, nor does it take the time to develop the bending. But I don't know if the actors could've salvaged that or not. Iroh though... Iroh was done dirty. Iroh is completely missing the silly dottering old man facade and is kinda missing the absolute powerhouse underneath it too. Again, I don't know if it was the writing or the acting that's bringing down the character. All in all, the new series far exceeded my expectations for it: I expected it to be a complete disaster. I admire that they're not trying to do a shot-for-shot remake, but it's not really deviating enough from the original to make it worth watching. When you do a remake, you either have to tell the story _far better_ than the original did, or you have to focus on an aspect of the story that the original didn't. Otherwise, why would you watch the new one instead of going back to the original? Remakes are more difficult than just making an original story. I don't think their skill is really that bad, I just think their skill doesn't match their ambition.
Ya but the color of ur skin especially in being based off races from Asian decent doesn’t really mean much there r light ppl and dark ppl in ever race. They should just cast on how they look from the show.

I agree with everything here except that Zuko's actor was really good. Other than the intensity of his rage (which might have been mitigated if he had a better script/direction), he nailed just about all the other aspects of the character. Especially the part of him being a teenager in terrible circumstances. Though they made him sympathetic too soon. And that scar... All the people who actually signed off on that disgrace...
Personally, I was glad they made him partially sympathetic much sooner. Zuko's redemption in the original series always seemed like way too much to me. In this version he doesn't have as far to go.
I just wish Katara's actress was more versatile in her emotions. It feels almost plain and simple. She looks amazing as Katara but remember that her character is supposed to feel frustrated and angry at the loss of her mother. I barely see any type of trauma from that loss in the live action.
She really does not do the character justice. It’s also the fault of the writers because we never got to see her do anything. She just became a water bending master off screen
It's kinda crazy how out of the main three, Sokka's got the worst casting, but his personality feels more true to the series than Katara, who got the best
I think there was a bit of missed nuance with Sokka. There's a fine line between being funny sarcastic and just being a cynic, original and remake Sokka fall on opposite sides
There are lots of Cherokee descendants not part of the 3 federal tribes. The 3 federal tribes are absolutely awful to any other group that claims (or even thinks they might be of) Cherokee descent. Just look at the history of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, or the continual denial of the Wolf Creek Tribe in Virginia under a mountain of Federal Tribe political pressure. The 3 federal tribes are all in Oklahoma or North Carolina. Think about how many refugee communities were scattered to places not in those 2 states. Thats even besides the denial of tribal membership for black Cherokee, which required a 2017 US Federal court order to stop. The federal Cherokee tribes are infamously awful about this, just look at how they still assert that the Lumbee are liars just because the Lumbee once thought they might be of cherokee descent.
@octo4012 hey man chill I know about this, but I heard this about sokka's from many native people, if they were gatekeeping his identity then that's on me, my bad. I can't help think the same thing. I did better burn damage make for Halloween in an hour with fake blood, school glue and tissue paper. It looms like a bad rash or allergic reaction to something.
Plus Sokka's actor actually gets Sokka. Even after all the shit the writers did to him, it still feels like Sokka, albeit with quite a bit of context cut out
I haven't watched the show yet but I've seen bts pictures and the cast interviews so I genuinely believe Aang has the perfect casting, it just sounds like he's stuck with a bad script
katara and sokka being dark skinned IS important, nearly half their tribe are. azula, ty lee and mai look nothing like there cartoon counterparts which drag their characters down. How could anybody be intimidated by Azula or Mai? Ty should at least be fit considering what she was doing in the show. Their sizes and features in general give perfect characterization, Mai should be tall and skinny with sharp eyes as an example, it shows you some of her character without even speaking.
Ty Lee looked spot on, but Mai definitely threw me off. I know she has a rounder face, but they could've at least had her hair and makeup look sharper. Similar case with Azula.
I think sokka did a great job as acting like sokka. He is more grown than the original, but I don’t mind that. I feel like he gets a lot of hate for some reason. Makes me sad :(
@@mahiiragi I’m sure that’s part of the problem but it’s also up to these actors to not act like robots without emotion when playing their parts. Honestly they should of just let Sokka do more improv, I wouldn’t be surprised if they shut down his ideas
On the topic of katana and sokka’s casting. The water tribes are based on indigenous (specifically Inuit) people, so I personally think the fact that indigenous people were casted means more than their skin shade
Zuko actually grew on me this show. i had the same opinion as you in the beginning but then his acting made me fall in love with the actor and especially in the scenes with Iroh you can see that he is acting Zuko perfectly. He just doesn't look like him and they again didn't make the scar as severe as it should be
Azula and Zuko’s actors have very soft and round facial features, this is the reason they don’t look intimidating. As an artist specialised in character design, shapes really do matter both on paper and in real life. Casting someone with sharper and more angular features would make them more intimidating. In character design, there are 3 main shapes with their characteristics: Round/circle = reliable and friendly Square/rectangle = calm and (physically) strong Triangle = distrustful and evil
Azula, Zuko, and Aang's casting specifically looking more child-like is because the showrunners wanted to showcase the imbalance of power in the avatar world in that the adults placed highly important titles at the the hands of children who don't understand what they're doing. Comparatively, Azula and Zuko in the cartoon was focused on balancing their rage and immaturity with their abilities as a bender. This especially applied to Zuko in the first half of the show, and Azula in the latter half. The producers obviously took atla to a different direction and I think the casting is fine
The only two i really didn't like where zuko and Azula, they just didn't seem sharp angled enough, id always imagined they'd have really defined sharp faces. Azula in particular just doesnt give off that cruel sadistic vibe she should
Azula's actress has soft and round features while the only round thing on Azula herself was her head, she was really miscast. Zuko same thing, but atleast his eyes are sharp, adds to the intimidating feel Zuko gives off.
I don't understand why Avatar fans are this obsessed with the character's facial features. If you want to watch something that looks like a cartoon, watch the cartoon. Actors are not "miscast" if they don't look like cartoon characters. They are cast based on whether they can act or not.
@@anemarin4lif358azula IS a sympathetic villain lmao, she’s supposed to be tragic. Katara is an NPC after losing the annoying side that completed her humanity as Katara Sokka's sexism disappeared which meant no other way for character development other than give him random problems Roku stole Bumi's jokes, which turned Bumi from Mad Genius to just Mad Seceret Tunnel... Might as well remove the entire thing if they were planning on removing Kataraang
I mean let's be honest they weren't gonna cast Black People for the Water Tribes. @@kaimobley5324 Not black people! As a black person myself I would not have been pleased about that. It would have made no sense unless they were also indigenous. @@kwebvin9939It was stupid having Secret Tunnel so soon but I was actually impressed by the length they went to to avoid the underage romantic intimacy, which can be uncomfortable for many with the age difference being so much more obvious irl than animated. Then again, if they'd actually _waited_ for season two, when Gordon would be older, it might not have been so awkward.
What was good about zuko in the original show was that he had a massive scar that made him unable to see properly out of one eye. Do you know how rare it is to see facial disfigurements on humanised characters? The scar in real life is so minor… I get the extent of makeup, but I feel like they ‘toned it down’ to make him more attractive looking
If independent cosplayers and make up artists can make the most grotesque looking scars you can imagine, a professional team has no excuse. They definitely downplayed his disfigurement to make him look more conventionally attractive.
Yeah I think Hollywood in general shies away from permanent injuries on characters who they want to be relatable (to a general audience), and yes probably also gaging attractiveness potential. But as a notorious knit picker myself, it just doesn’t make sense that Zuko’s eyeball wouldn’t have been damaged. Or his eyelids and the very least. Bro still got eyelashes too lol. But people with facial burn scars exist and therefore should be portrayed more realistically. I think they did a good job in the animated design, and they didn’t shy away from it, even though the show was geared for kids. Here on CZcams, people with serious scars, and even folks with no visible scars who wear prosthetics get flagged in their own videos! They get their content that shows their medical differences taken down because it’s “graphic” and “inappropriate for children.” And I’m not talking medical videos, just things like switching a walking leg prosthetic to a running leg. Long rant short, I don’t think they should be visually softening down this serious injury that changed Zuko’s whole life and perspective. It does a disservice to anyone who has had a life-changing injury. Which could be any of us. You never know where life will take you, but it would be nice if we stigmatized bodily differences less
I was shocked to see Azula's casting actress for the first time because she looked so nice and cute, I couldn't believe she would play such a ruthless role. But I guess we'll see how it works out...
Zuko looks perfect and the hair is supposed to show shame. In an Indian comic I remember Krishna cut off half of some dude's hair as a lesson because the guy was a real jerk. Now that look is considered cool where every liberal and spidergwen in the movies have it.
Metis girlie here! Though I am very white and pass as such in society, I think it’s important to say that the water tribe definitely should’ve been darker. Colourism is a huge problem in indigenous communities and how we’re portrayed and Sokka being whiter than the snow and his actor with… dubious claims to Cherokee heritage at best… is absolutely abhorrent. How hard is it to find a dark skinned indigenous actor who isn’t race faking? I’d assume significantly easier than one would think
I mostly agree with you, though I'd like to add a little more nuance. I too think Sokka's casting should be darker, but I don't neccesarily believe it needs to be a Native American or Pacific Islander. If the best actor that looks like Sokka is hispanic or italian or greek or whatever, I'm okay with that as long as he actually looks like the character.
Yess! And as a Métis who is whiter than the fur on a mouse I was slightly disappointed that katara is Native American. At the very least, they could’ve gotten an indigenous person from Canada. I was really hoping to see Inuit representation
@@Eosinophyllis yes! Zuko and azula are perfect, theyre just young for their parts. Especially Azula. But this is likely intentional as they wanted to make room for the actors and characters to age as the show goes on
Can we address the birthmark that’s supposed to be a burn scar on Zuko’s face. It looks like a bad make up job rather than a man who’s been disfigured by fire. The animation had better visuals on that then the live action. Were prosthetics to expensive, or is that actor allergic to them? I thought the actor who played jet, should have played Zuko. He had the rage the character needed.

Maybe Katara's casting was good appearance wise, but her acting? Honestly it was horrible. And that comes from a person who usually doesn't notice bad acting. Most of the times, when I see people talking about bad acting on certain role of a certain acter, I usually think "meh, it was fine for me". And here even for me it looked like this 🗿 almost all the time, almost no emotion was on that face of her. Out of all the cast acting wise Katara was the worst close to Azula, who did not intimidate me in the slightest, when in the original she was a real threat from the very first of her appearance. Iroh was the best imo when it comes in appearance and acting combined.

People are seeming to forget that they’re portraying children… I know shocking but most children don’t look like anime characters. The show’s fault is in the writing, why aren’t you afraid of azula? They made her lack confidence in herself and actually see zuko as a potential threat to catching the avatar. Why doesn’t zuko seem so cutthroat? They made him randomly choose to not be when they jumbled all the episodes together that were meant to be separate. I mean they straight up skipped so many key moments for Iroh to teach and then expect us to just know cause we watched the old show. Zuko and Sokka carrying the show on their backs makes this video funnier.
Their colour is important. The tribes are based off different races, places, religions and beliefs.

The scar is on the other side...

The indigenous community was really disappointed that sokka wasn't an actual indigenous person
The federal Cherokee tribes are infamously awful about this, just look at how they still assert that the Lumbee are liars just because the Lumbee once thought they might be of cherokee descent.

katara and sokka being dark skinned IS important, nearly half their tribe are. azula, ty lee and mai look nothing like there cartoon counterparts which drag their characters down. How could anybody be intimidated by Azula or Mai? Ty should at least be fit considering what she was doing in the show. Their sizes and features in general give perfect characterization, Mai should be tall and skinny with sharp eyes as an example, it shows you some of her character without even speaking.
But.. Ty Lee IS fit in the live action? She looks so much like her cartoon counterpart but I do agree with Mai
The costume definitely added some extra bulk on Ty Lee.
Definitely agree, Azula and Mai were not it at all. Azula was not nearly as scary and intimidating as she is in the show
Ty Lee looked spot on, but Mai definitely threw me off. I know she has a rounder face, but they could've at least had her hair and makeup look sharper. Similar case with Azula.

Azula and Zuko’s actors have very soft and round facial features, this is the reason they don’t look intimidating. As an artist specialised in character design, shapes really do matter both on paper and in real life. Casting someone with sharper and more angular features would make them more intimidating. In character design, there are 3 main shapes with their characteristics:
Round/circle = reliable and friendly
Square/rectangle = calm and (physically) strong
Triangle = distrustful and evil

I like Sokka’s actor the most out of all of these, I feel like he really matched the face of Sokka’s in the show, and plus some of his lines sound like Sokka’s when he’s joking
I feel like the Zuko and Azula casting is really interesting. Like in the cartoon, they're 14 and 16 from the perspective of a 12 yo Aang, so they kinda look older/sharper. But the live action they look more 14/16 from the perspective of an adult which like. I think is gonna make their stories hit harder. I do think they should have gone harder with Zuko's scarring if they could have idk much about fx
Ozai and Azula don’t look nearly as evil enough
I just wanna give ozai a hug
on episode 4 I think now? Honestly so far Zuko’s been my favourite, I do think he’s pretty true to the cartoon and his acting is like spot on!
My biggest gripe tho, I WISH they’d let the characters be goofy. I don’t mind a more serious tone overall, I think it works well and lends weight to moments like fire nation attacks where people can actually die (kind of) on screen. But did they really have to tone Aang down THAT much?? AND Sokka, and Katara even. They’re still kids at the end of the day, let them be kids!
Both katara & sokka should've been way darker especially as main characters
agreed
Yeah but the Water tribe was based on the American indigenous people and they both are from tribes
They’re still Native American
@@scarecrow4611 they should've still been tan though cause native Americans are not pale
@@StarStrixen ever heard of mixed blooded Natives? I mean just because they are more pale than other members doesn’t take away their Lineage.
Ozai just stares while someone says "I AM A STURGEON."
I have to say Uncle Iroh’s casting was spot on and I was very happy with it.
First time iroh opened his mouth, my instinctive response to whatever he said was “not my uncle iroh”
I feel like they could’ve done better with the show. I don’t know why they made certain characters serious when they’re supposed to be fun or playful or even have character growth. It could’ve been more epic. I watch the first episode and I wanted to fall asleep.
All I know is they made it more boring than the show. They really could’ve and should’ve done better.
I just don't like how Katara look but others? Kinda okay
Azula and zukos facial features should have been sharper, but the actors for them rn are so adorable and I love how they play the parts ❤️
Solka’s facial expressions were on point.
White boy Sokka
Wokka
WHY DID YOU USE THAT PICTURE FOR SOKKA? HES ONE OF THE BEST CASTINGS OF THE SHOW
No he’s not, he’s not even native he lied about his ethnicity to get the role
@@Zhanya_Hotd well its not really confirmed yet, but if it was true, either way hes got the personality, looks, and character of the show sokka. hes literally sokka and you cant change my mind. ethnicity is important, but its only part of what goes into casting, and one factor in a person that isn’t perfect isn’t going to affect the casting much. the original voice actors for the show were all not of the inspired peoples ethnicity.
Zuko and ozai killed it bro
Sokka is cast perfectly in my opinion, his face and voice are spot on what I’d imagine.
Actually sokka and zuko are spot on. Zukos actor killed it
Sokkas casting is trash
@jimmiesavage437 You're only saying that because you think he lied about being indigenous. That scene with his hair down proved that he looks exactly like Sokka apart from skin and eye colour.
This is based on looks. Zuko does not look accurate but his acting is fine.
@@noaddedsugar2930 it is though? You can't just expect a paper cut out. If U actually see him W his long hair. He resembles book 3 zuko
@@Twin_Dragon_FistsHe DID. The Cherokee tribe already stated how his tribe is apart of the fraud list they’ve posted and how the actor Paid to Get in. Stop speaking for natives
Zuko's actor was dope, but how they wrote him sucks...and he doesnt look the part of Zuko in the least bit.
Zuko doesn't look perfect but he plays the role brilliantly almost perfect
I think they did great with the cast. It’s hard to find actors to fill rolls and I believe they chose the best cast they could. I do truly hope they keep to the original story, even if it’s the story from the manga version.
I just didn’t like how Katara looked
Or how she acted. Bland and Emotionless as ALL HELL! Yet also selfish/girl boss they tried to make her
Aang actor is really weird with words. It's like they never try to retake his dialog and his mostly mumbling in them.
June was SPOT ON! If you asked me what I think she would look like in real life I would imagine exactly that
When I saw Sokkas casting for the first time, that's exactly what I thought
My thing about it is Sokka’s actor lied about being indigenous to get the role. He lied about being a part of a Cherokee tribe that doesn’t exist so I really hope they recast him. I don’t care about how much people enjoyed him the first season he took a role that could’ve went to an indigenous actor that looked like the character
He didn't lie, his tribe just isn't officially registered federally as one of the 3 main tribes groups. If you honestly look at him and think "white guy" your brain is broken.
He didn’t lie his tribe isn’t officially recognised…. But there a million native Americans from unrecognised tribes ( this all stems from the time of racism, as only the tribes that bent to us imperial rule got those recognitions ) so stop invalidating millions of natives
he did not lied to get the role tho, the cast didn’t even know what character they were portraying during the interview, they were given fake names and fake scripts until the final reveal😅😅😅 how can he lied to get the role if he didn’t even know
@@GUAGA0612 because he auditioned for a role that is of Asian or indigenous descent and he is neither. the Cherokee tribe he stated he was a part of doesn’t exist. Look it up.
The Cherokee were a real tribe@Pinkphoenixfire, they have reservations in Oklahoma
