Using AI as a Design Tool in My Architecture Practice

  • Unsure of how to incorporate AI tools into your design process? Follow along as I share my experiments using the text-to-image generative AI app, Midjourney, and see how I'm using it in my architecture practice.
It all starts with a sketch and an idea.
While Midjourney produces captivating images of seemingly perfect buildings, it's important not to mistake them for finished work. Instead, we want to direct it like a sculptor shapes raw materials. The key to using Midjourney creatively lies in controlling the output through specific prompt language, rather than treating it as a mere rendering engine. Remember, AI is a mirror for your own creativity, so the quality of input determines the quality of output.
As you experiment you'll start noticing small flaws or peculiarities in the images where things aren't quite right. These imperfections can be harnessed to uncover new solutions and truly leverage AI as a creative tool. Cultivating the ability to identify these deviations and explore their possibilities is an important skill.
Using Midjourney can sometimes feel like a gambling experience, endlessly remixing and upscaling images until you stumble upon something you like. While there is a certain magic to it, it's crucial to step away from the algorithm periodically and process these new ideas using different tools. For me, that means returning to sketching to synthesize and consolidate these learnings.
This process of transitioning from analog to digital and back again - for me - yields unique outcomes. By learning to direct AI toward well-defined goals, the results can be transformative.

Coming from the photography world, I think it will be a similar thing. People are worried about AI replacing photographers, but the reality is that people want creative vision, not just the result. AI will never really replace that. AI will however, come to serve as an exceptionally useful tool in creative ideation and development. Like Eric said, it's more like sketching than having any prepared final product. That's left up to the individual.

The only problem being right now this is singular, takes too much time to reproduce the same aesthetic across completely different environments, you learn just some data science text matching algortihm that you do by hand, you didn't get better at creating anything with your hands, you can't get hires prints because of current limitations. It's a nice toy for sure. But my point being if anyone re invests that time at becoming a better visual artist in any form, 2d, painting, 3d, animation then having to use these tools will only enchance creatuon not become the prison for the creativity

Remember people, treat AI like Jarvis where you’re Tony Stark. The brains is all you but you have a intelligent assistant to do the dirty work. Once you rely on AI to design something, it becomes poisonous

Similar approach to creating music. Mixing until you find the right sound. AI doesn't have a soul, so it can't understand or realize creativity

No AI here just a camera in different locations

Would it be insulting to do this yourself and bring some to an architect to polish out the idea?

Imagine when this will go straight to 3d revit models.

AI imagery looks fake and unappealing, and LLM's distillations do little for me; guess I'm waiting for the moment when any of this bears edible fruit.

I think if you can take anything from this it's that AI tools can be incorporated as one part of a larger process. I see the images as a waypoint that can influence a next action or new direction rather than an endpoint or finished result. The continual shift between analog and digital processes is both satisfying and fruitful for me but not for all.

The more I learn about architecture the more I understand they are really artists. Which is why they can be replaced with AI

Lol people in frenzy trying to integrate the tools that will replace them, as if the maxim "if you cant beat them, join them" would work wiht incoming AI overtake. This is the last hurrah.

LOL!!! As an industrial designer for the last 20 years Midjourney is more like a software for ideation and brainstorming and should not be used to develop the final design!!!!! LMAO!!!
