  • Grapes can only grow when they’re connected to the vine-the vine is what sustains life and makes it possible for fruit to grow. In the same way, humans need connection-not just any connection, but really a deep connection with Jesus. In the final week of the series, Duane Calvin shares what Jesus meant when He said, “I am the true vine.”

    Message Notes:
    Defining Jesus
Week 7 "I Am the True Vine.”
Jesus is defined by many different names and terms. Who was Jesus historically? And how does knowing Jesus help all of us in the present and into the future?
    • Jesus says, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser,” which tells us how to have a thriving and growing life in Christ.
A big question we often ask ourselves is, “Am I going to be able to get connected?”
If we’re not connected, we can feel isolation, separation and disconnection.
People need people, but people really need Jesus.
These seven “I Am” statements of Jesus tell us who He is:
         1. He is the Good Shepherd.
         2. He is the Light of the World.
         3. He is the Gate for the Sheep.
         4. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
         5. He is the Bread of Life.
         6. He is the Resurrection and the Life.
         7. He is the True Vine.
    John 15:1 (ESV)
“True Vine” references Israel in the Old Testament.
Jesus is also making a declaration of His divinity.
The vinedresser, or the husbandman, is the keeper of the vineyard.
    John 15:2-5a (NIV)
         The vinedresser cuts.
         And, the vinedresser prunes.
Pruning brings out the best in us.
There are four references to fruit in the passage we read:
         - He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit.
         - Every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
         - Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it
       must remain in the vine.
         - Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
    Galatians 5:22-23a (NLT)
         Are you bearing spiritual fruit?
    John 15:4-5a (NIV)
         “Abide in me.”
The word remain or abide means to:
         - stay connected to
         - to be dependent on
         - to live a life of obedience to Christ
         - to maintain a relationship with Him
“Abide is an old English word for “remain,” “stay steady” and “keep your position.” What it means to abide in Christ-that is, always to be resting on him, anchored to him, fixed in him, drawing from him, continually connected and in touch with him. Abiding in Christ brings peace, joy and love, answers to prayer, and fruitfulness in service. The abiding life is the abundant life.” - JI Packer
John 15:4b (NIV) To bear fruit, we must be with Jesus.
Practical steps to abiding in Jesus:
         1. Spend time with the Lord daily in prayer.
         2. Read the Bible and be obedient to God’s Word.
         3. Get connected to others who are also abiding in Christ.
         4. Allow yourself to be pruned.
