Blaze cord. It really does fluff well. However I had no luck on my water tests. Perhaps I had too small of a strand. It was like 4 inches at most. However it does fluff so well I was able to spark about an 1/8 inch fluffed piece with a tiny ferro rod that is about 2 or 3 inches long.

Have you seen the new Titan survival XLparacord? It now has kevlar core instead of the copper wire. It has a braided fishing line also instead of monofilament fishing line. It is also 1,000 lb tencel strength! Just came out and I just ordered some for $26.00 on sale for 100' hank.

My favorite cordages are: Mil-Spec 550 paracord from the Paracord Store; Catahoula #36 Twisted Bankline; Catahoula #12 Braided Bankline; and 50 lb Mono-filament. Always have some of each, in various configurations, in each kit.
I gave you a thumbs up Chris, because you did a great job putting those head to head; but I'm still old school. My cordage is my cordage. My Tinder and extenders are something different. If I can carry (or even only wear paracord), I can also keep a couple wet fire or something other in a pocket or somewhere. I guess in a pinch... maybe, if it was the only think I had on me. But then you'd also have to have something on you to ignite the stuff. Again... I'm old school... I try to be better prepared.

Yes performs better than the more expensive ones I have tested. Easy to light tinder!
Worst are those that ad in stuff like kevlar or wire which has less strech than the rest of the cordage so under stress all is first just on this one threat. Can lead to a short internal break before full strech is reached and thus makes it unusable for knots.
Also wire in it makes it harder to work with.
For me please only tinder + fishing line added...rest is useless

4DB's cord is appealing. I use UST's to make lanyards and whatnot. My question is if 4DB is going to offer another (brighter) color? The nice thing about UST's cord is that when I need an emergency tinder I know what I'm grabbing. I know it's not just another hank of cordage. It would be cool if they offered it in a bright contrasting color scheme.

Fireplugs are great and the best part is that you can easily make them yourself. Its dental cotton plugs soaked in wax (if you use wax with a lower melting temp then they fluff a bit better like komposite wax or adding in coconut oil into regular wax)...also works with cotton rounds
Fireputty is really bad and very overpriced for how bad it is.

    • @martinerhard8447
      @martinerhard8447 Před rokem

@@ewakingwood komposite wax is what you find in those graveyard candles that have a plastic casing. They need this because the wax has a lower melting temp and is softer and would all melt and flow away before burning at the wick without it. This wax is mainly hardened plant oil.
So this is your soft wax.
The harder wax you can use regular paraffin candle wax or the even harder stearin canlde wax.
Mix until you reach the hardness you desire. This also depends on outside temperatures and during winter it is better to have more of the soft wax in the mix
the dental plugs you can buy very cheaply online (also aliexpress). or just use cotton rounds

To me it's just foolish to cannibalize your cord. For one, you should carry some actual fire starter, basically weights nothing and takes no space, and most importantly easy to use. Same goes for fishing line or metal wire that's included in some survival cords.
And if you see your firestarter is running out, you should have plenty of time to actually get some more before it runs out. And if you have matches or lighter, which should be your primary fire starting method, you most likely don't even need fire starter.
If I was to make survival kit I would probably use something like bank line, it's strong enough unless you plan to start climbing. It's just more space and weight efficient.
