  • When doing some astrophotography of the Leo triplets, something weird appeared in my final stack. At first, it looked like an artifact from the camera or telescope. But at second glance - I suspected this to be a moving object!
Thanks to David from SAAF for helping with the investigation of this object!

What happens when you encounter something weird in your photographs? Check this episode out to learn a thing or two about what can turn up in your images! Thanks to David from SAAF for all the help with investigating this!

I have had a number of cool mysteries like that, too. Thanks for making a video about it!

Did you find out which asteroids there were? I later learned you can simply run plate solving in PI to identify one :) Thanks for watching!

@@GediAstro They turned out to be geostationary satellites in one case and and Starlink satellites in the other, not asteroids.

@@jpastroguy Tough luck. Hopefully you'll get one soon enough! :) Try the area around Leo if you're in the northern hemisphere!

Interesting. I wonder how many of us have caught something similar and just thought it was an artifact and processed it out of the final image so well done for investigating. Given your bottle 9 location, that image ain't that bad.

I believe that it’s mostly an OSC problem, for mono, you’d get the same artifact I got. I actually have a friend that changed to mono recently and suddenly got an asteroid in his photo too! :) sometimes it’s worth looking at your RGB subs :)

That is clearly a hot pixel it moves for more likely you are doing dithering.. or the framing is slightly changing when swapping filters.

No, it’s an asteroid, it plate solves to 129 Antigone

Excellent detective work. Often the magic is in the unexpected find in an image. CA

Thank you! And thanks for watching! It was a pretty spectacular surprise when I first saw the final stack. 🙂 In retrospect, I could easily just use PI to plate solve the asteroid, but using a bit of math and detective work, was more fun :)
