  • Do clouds always lead to rain? Of course not, we see white clouds in the sky all the time and they don’t lead to rain.
Ever wondered why clouds look dark before rain? What is the science behind these dark clouds?
Clouds generally look white because of a physics phenomenon called scattering. The white sunlight is scattered away by the particles of the cloud. Thus, they appear white. But, what are these particles?
Think back to the question ‘why do clouds cause rain?’ - because clouds are made up of water droplets! But there needs to be enough water droplets for the cloud to cause rain. When the cloud becomes heavier and bigger, it gets ready to rain.
But bigger and heavier clouds also mean dark clouds. Because such clouds don’t scatter the sunlight the same way. The sunlight gets scattered by the upper portions of the cloud itself. It doesn’t reach the lower parts of the cloud!
We can see dark clouds only from below because no sunlight is reaching those regions.
So, now we know why rain clouds are dark. Do you enjoy clouds before rain? Stay tuned to BYJUs Now we Know for more science behind clouds, rains and many more everyday science phenomena.
