  • In this video I do a thorough review of the Garmin Varia RCT715. Like the RTL515 it is a radar with a tail light but with the addition of a rearview camera.

    Works great for me, I have picked 3 number plates from 3 close passes from our local group rides. It’s no go pro but yes it works

    Shane Miller has an interesting new video about a ConnectIQ add-on for the Garmin Varia.

    Ever since the original Fly 6 came out some 8 years ago or whatever it was, I've been thinking about a rear mounted camera for safety...but as you know living here in the South where front license plates are not required in pretty much every state, I've never convinced myself that it wouldn't actually catch someone in a hit and run nor positively ID them.

      Put it on the front of your bike, unless you are rearward bound backwards bicyclist.

      @@ellerybice3787 Then you defeat the radar safety feature on the device (unless the radar detection sensitivity on the radar is the same as put it on the rear/back)

    After watching Shane Millers video I was very convinced that I wouldn't get the RCT715. You made it seem a bit more appealing. However I still think I will wait until version 2 of it. 🙂

    Dcrainmaker wasn’t too happy with. Maybe garmin put a few updates since then ?

      Maybe. I actually did watch his video before I used it. I am on the latest firmware. One of his big complaints was how slow the phone app is. I agree, but the computer experience is so good it makes up for it, almost.

      Chipmunk "rainmaker" lives in a damp, dark depressing environment, do not except joy coming forth.

    I have an iPhone 12 mini that's compact enough to mount on my handlebars. I've use the app to monitor rides for five hours plus (w/out running down the phone battery). One advantage of the iPhone mount is the audio alerts are more than loud enough to hear (that's not always the case with some Garmin devices' audio strength).

    thank you very much for showing me how to view video clips from my garmin Varia rtl715 😊 much easier using the computer 🖥 😀 cheers 👍

    Looks good! I picked up a Varia on your recommendation a couple of years ago and couldn’t be happier. Shame the cars where you live don’t need to have a front number plate to ID them by.

    6:47 I saw in another video that when incident recording is triggered (which can happen riding over small bumps etc), it automatically goes into and stays in continious recording mode. So you need to set it back to radar-only recording each time manually if that’s your preference. Maybe they fixed it via firmware by now.

    I use the 515 and wouldn't ride without it. But, I still, always, check my side mirror as cars approach.

    Daytime use looks good, not too sure about night use, that red glow is like a mist, other than that expensive but good.

    I definitely like the all-in-one nature of the new Garmin Varia. I’m trying to decide what the best rear-camera would be for actually getting good enough quality to consistently identify a license plate. Would you be able to use a GoPro in a similar continuous-recording fashion? Any experience with the Fly 6?

  • @lucferrari3109
    @lucferrari3109 Před rokem +2

    Important question.Can you read the license plate in case of an incident ?If you can't, than i think it is useless for me.I have the 515, and it is great.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před rokem +1

      That’s actually pretty hard for me to test in my area because front license plates are not required. Shane Miller, in his review, did a test and it was spotty. My conclusion is for cars PASSING you, you can definitely get the make, model and color. But the license plate is not a definite. However, in the unfortunate incident, a car comes DIRECTLY behind you and hits you, I’m pretty confident you can make out the license plate number from a video.

    Used mine today with Pixel 6 and it didn't seem to have much impact on my phone battery over a one hour ride.

    Otherwise good video BUT one minute in and already wrong. Varia is not an action camera, it is a safety camera. It's not for social media, it is for reading the license plate of a hit-and-run.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před 3 měsíci

      Maybe not quite as clear as a GoPro but you could still use it for rear facing footage if you want to include some b-roll and what not from a group ride.

  • @arelisdiaz6260

    How long do the batteries last on continuous mode? I normally do long rides. I've just ordered one of these lights/camera. Lately the aggression towards cyclists is increasing and I've had a few scary moments. I wish it was a 360 camera as Iast week I had a driver overtake me to slam his brakes a few times in front of me also pulling to a lay-by and getting out of the car to intimidate me. Being alone, female seems like some people have more testosterone. The aggression is never as extreme when cycling in a group, unfortunately cycling in a group "always" is not an option.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před 3 měsíci

      I believe the Garmin says four hours using the camera and light and about 10 hours if you’re not using the camera if the light is in blinking mode, which is the mode I recommend for daytime riding.

    is that true that the Varia RCT715 is not compatible with the new Garmin 1040?

      Never heard that and I would find that very hard to believe. Sounds like a rumor started by Wahoo, lol.
