The JDM Caldina GT-Four Turbo Should’ve Been So Much Better. | Rally Dreams

  • Welcome back! Today Marcus is driving a 2002 Toyota Caldina GT-Four N. This hopped-up, 3S-GTE powered wagon was a great (but late) bookend to the era of homologation rally cars from Toyota. Named after Toyota's late test driver, Hiromu Naruse, the N edition was everything the original Celica GT-Four models stood for, minus that extra edge of hardcore motorsport feel. Enjoy!

Just realizing this car looks much smaller on camera than it is in person... It's not quite the rally-infused GT-Four Celicas we loved from the 90s, but it's a crazy affordable daily that's all too capable. Enjoy!

I have a Caldina GT4 that looks exactly the same as the one in the video on the outside, same blue and even has the factory fitted optional roof rails. I also have a Honda Civic FD2 and was surprised to find out that the Honda is actually wider and longer than the Caldina. The Caldina is roomy - I throw a couple of bikes in the back easily, along with loads of other stuff. It's a bit of a Tardis really - bigger inside than outside.

Owned a 2004 N Spec wagon back when I lived in NZ a few years ago. Great wagon, but ruined by the 4 speed slushbox. Very common for owners of these to swap in the manual from the previous gen Caldina (GT4 ST215)

Yup. Best car I've owned and I[ve been through a fair number of cars. I like it so much that I've been driving it for over 10 years. Can't imagine what I'd swap it for. Everything seems to be going to CVT in my region. I may well simply stick with my Caldina long enough for it to be classified as vintage.

As someone who had been playing Japanese-developed PS2 games in the mid-2010s for the first time, I was fascinated by this thing when I saw it in Gran Turismo 4. I like how it follows the same striking design language as the Celica and WiLL VS, which sets it apart from other Toyotas. It's built on the same platform as the Scion tC and Toyota Avensis, but it's cooler than both cars.

I have owned and use it for past 10 years (N-Spec). Beside wear and tear, it bear Toyota durability tagline and the maintenance like normal car as long as no crazy modification.
The only downside is “brake” and “4 speed auto gearbox”. If they could put in brembo like those Scooby and Evo that will be great, because I could sense the original braking system sometimes can’t match the fast braking.
Even though it almost 20 years, it still has a fresh look if compare on those European car at that time.
Sadly it is an underrated car in comparison with other legendary JDM and believe this is one of the most powerful Toyota at that time because it rule by Subaru and Evo.
