    Pro Tip: if you're staying at a tall condo in a bigger city, stay in one that has 4 elevators. Anything less and you may be waiting a lot during peak hours. Trust me.

    It’s a very important point that you make about living in a place with security at the front door. While you are in the early stages of dating a Filipina, she will be posting pictures of you together on her social media and telling the world about her new man. Now comes the time that you have had enough of her and break up, she now faces the reality of having to tell everyone she’s been dumped, or in her words “it didn’t work out”. So the reason why they turn psycho is because they can’t face the embarrassment of going back to their mum and telling them that she blew it. Filipinas don’t think before they act and this is a message that he’s never told. Thanks for the video and have a great day.😊

    Condo's are good. But living in a gated housing community is best. Playground, pool, good electricity, guards and patrols. A little more expensive at 50k+. If you lease from a developer, maintenance is inclusive and up to a 30 Year lease is available. The longest term costs about half as much.

  • @gailmaplesden7380
    @gailmaplesden7380 Před 6 měsíci +12

    I totally agree Gio , an apartment or condo rentals are the best bet depending upon your budget. You can get a decent apartment for a couple hundred dollars a month. It won't be extremely large, but that's just less to have to put air conditioning in. You should be around a quarter of your budget "not your income " on your rent. The same amount ruffly should be spent on groceries/sundries and another quarter on utilities and gas or tricycles. If you can ride a scooter or motorcycle, then affordable ones are available from India or China. Tvs is a decent brand. You should have already done your recon missions before you ever even thought about moving to the philippines so you could get an idea where you want to be. A condo rental is a great idea if it fits in your budget and remember condo is a relative term and can be very in amenities and security. Renting a home in a gated community is another option and can give you a little more space and privacy. Remember, more space may open the door for squatters on your couch and on your dime . Getting rid of them may require a crow bar, so keep it small like a one bedroom one bath, or if you plan on having a live-in house keeper, then you will need a two bedroom two bathroom unit. I recommend having a housekeeper come in twice a week or so and not have a live-in because of all the additional costs involved with a live-in housekeeper. Remember that you have options, and they don't always involve having a woman living with you. Dating is cool too .

    Condo life is a no brainer, everything you need plus security generates a stable environment while you learn the ins and outs of the local motion of wherever you decide to land while also learning the do's and don'ts of dating, budgeting, cultural nuances, and the flow of things in general as it relates to the time changes on the islands.

  • @JohnKanuck
    @JohnKanuck Před 6 měsíci +10

    I agree absolutely. I lived in Jamaica for a year+, which sounds like a fairly similar environment, and rented in two small apartment compounds. First, no one uses the pool. My apartment was in both cases, closest to the pool and it was almost like having a private pool. The pool maintenance guy was like my best friend - he always checked with me to make sure I got my swim in before dumping chemicals in. And having a pool is an easy (non-threatening) was to invite girls to visit, and to see them in their bikinis early on.
    And the environment was chill - we could hang out by the pool, stroll around the grounds, or walk to a nearby restaurant (or pick up some food to cook or eat on the balcony. And the security works both ways - the girl feels more secure - you are inviting her into your community, as opposed to your apartment bedroom. And she gets to enjoy the communal amenities, which in one case, was sitting on a park bench overlooking the marina and the cruise ships in the distance. So a very chill environment. And, like you said, very flexible. When a problem arose at the first apartment compound, I just switched to another one, which was even closer to the pool and local services. A really hassle-free way of living.
    But the most important thing is you learn so much in your first few months - about the city, the cool places, where you want to eat, how you want to live, how easy it is for girls to get to your place - everything. You would be crazy to dig in too soon.

      Well, the video failed to mention that if you want a prime beach side location in either Thailand or the Philippines a condo is really your only option anyway. There are no houses in these areas obviously because developers can make a lot more money by putting up high rise condos or hotels there. The main downside to houses for me in Thailand is that, just as in the Philippines, they are very poorly designed and have very awkward and inefficient layouts. In fact, its almost as if the people designing them had no architectural training whatsoever (I have had). There are rare exceptions of course and the first time I lived in Phuket for a year I managed to find a great house with an ultra-modern design which was built around its own private pool (nice to be able to swim naked with your girlfriend). Still, I ultimately was not happy being 15 minutes away from both the beach and the main city by car or bike. So, when I went back to live there again after retiring, I only considered condos and only those on the third floor or above.
      As for Boracay it used to be my favorite vacation spot and I have been there at least 6 times. Of course, most of those vacations were back in the days when the boats just dropped you off on the beach. Now everyone arrives at the pier and takes ground transportation to their hotels. Still as much I love Boracay I’m not sure if I would be happy living there permanently myself.

    Definitely considering a rental on my new favorite island. Had an awesome time for 5 nights.
    However!!!, I have been here long enough to suppress that urge to set roots. I would have houses on 5 islands by now.
    I will rent a bit and check around the next corner. I do have a house 40min from Iloilo. Even though I think my new destination is paradise, at the end, life is life no matter where you are and when the shine wears off you find out the reality. I am excited to rent for now. I am listening to you as I type and you are 100% about the weird designs, colors and configurations here.

    Good advice, I rent a beachfront house and it has advantages as well as disadvantages. Beachfront is expensive, house and yard care are my responsibility. Maintenance on plumbing, air-conditioning can get expensive. The benefits exist as well. For me I love the location, semi-private beach, the ability to put up ham radio antennas, and we never hear anything from the property owner 👍. If not for the radio, I'd certainly be in a condo.

Kinda be a Nomad and then u will know when u need a condo , house or banana leaf hut. Never assume you going to fly across the earth and live happily ever after. The kid in the candy store will eventually want out trust me and you won’t know how u like it there until u been there awhile.

      Problem is the hotels in Phil are a total scam. Even crappier than the condos but 4X the daily price. They are built by kids who can't paint within the lines. Never stay at a completely new property because #1 recent standards are even worse than a few years ago #2 The building hasn't been tested to be safe, stable, functional etc. don't be the crash test dummy for an owner who is basically a slave owner who knows nothing about construction or construction management.

    I think starting off in a condo would be good until you get acclimated to the area. A short term of a few months, to really look around and make sure that's where you want to be setting down roots. Either settle in and see what other options are there, or if you find the area's not to your liking, pack up and try again somewhere else that catches your fancy.

    Instead of signing a lease for a condo that you just looked at see if you can rent an AirBnb in the same building or at the very least the same complex. This way you will experience security, intrusive noise, staff building amenities. Just because a condo building has a nice lobby doesn't make it a nice place to live. My Filipina wife and I have been doing AirBnb condos for the last 5 months since we have been back in the PI, you learn what to look for in AirBnb listings. Is it more expensive? Absolutely but you are not obligated to an unlivable condo / landlord either like you would be if you were to sign a lease.

    • @vgwalldecals
      @vgwalldecals Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@Alander8 Stay away from "Hosts" that own a lot of condos. I have found that they are like slum lords, happy to accept your money but not so much spending their money when it comes to an issue that needs to be fixed. Kitchens, some hosts do not allow cooking in their kitchens, if that's the case that defeats the whole purpose of an AirBnb, get a hotel room instead. Furniture, if all they have is a cheap futon in the living room to sit on, that's a hard pass for me. If you are staying any length of time that will destroy your back. I have seen many AirBnb's that have a kitchen but no dining table to sit at, hard pass. Before pulling the trigger for a one month stay, just rent for one weekend then decide if you want to stay a month or more after that weekend. Always check to make sure that the hosts are not going to charge you more for utilities if you stay a month or more. Always read the entire AirBnb listing and reviews.

    The amenities is what sold me too! I’m a gym guy, I like hot tub, swimming pool, and some have restaurants in the lobby. Like you said you could spend a whole day to yourself or even a date. I save money on gym fees, travel fees, food isn’t too expensive. I work from home trading etc. I can get up hit the gym hot tub shower and have breakfast delivered to my room, all while never leaving the same building. When I’m done working I can just WALK to the beach, bar, shops etc. I can’t express enough how it adds value to my life as well as luxury! You said you spend 600 which you might have bigger condo. I spend $300 month US dollar. I feel like I am getting over on them. They feel like they are getting over on me and it’s all good! I found apartments for same price and lower. Yet, not one came with everything. They had pool no gym, gym no hot tub etc. I do find myself spending the same amount on food as I do in the states cause the portions are small here so I have to get three times to make up. Thing is one serving wasn’t enough in the states either!

    In theory owning the condo is cheaper than renting maybe but there is lots income on the cash. Lower income is lower tax bracket. I think with 10 and 20 dollar hotels you might be able to date nation wide but watch out for the travel advisories. Total assets are a consideration I would think and who you would go to for advice on such stuff as the housing values in a particular area.

    As far as owning vs. renting it all depends what your long term plans are. If you see yourself living in the country for a very long time or forever then condo is your best bet as it would save you alot of money in the long run. if you're not sure or don't see yourself staying for a long time then renting a condo or apartment is the smart choice.

    I stayed in a newer condo connected to the mall in Quezon City (Manila) for 3.5 months before the pandemic, $600/month. It was so small it felt like being in a prison and tons of cockroaches (even the small ones just born) even with spraying constantly. Then I asked to use the two 50 meter lap pools and was told since I am not an owner of the condo, I could not use it. Not sure I ever want condo life again.

    Not sure I agree about condo living. I inspected a number of condos in Davao, newer ones were fine but expensive. The HOA fees used to maintain these properties looked like those funds might not be used for upkeep. I saw multiple ‘out of order’ elevators and general up keep was lacking. Just a note to be aware of in your search.

    Hey Gio. Do you just walk around the area where you are staying (hotel) and search for a condo? I'm wondering if you can just walk in, get a tour and sign a lease. Also, what do you need to sign a lease? Seems like if you just got there on your 30 day visa, they might be skeptical. Do they accept cash every month? Just a few questions. The Philippines is quickly pricing itself out of the retirement market. Far better living standards for the same or less can easily be found in other southeast Asian countries and without all the filth for a lack of a better term. Plus all of the out of stock and cold food services is a huge negative...just my opinion.
