I actually had a friend who asked me about getting into black metal just the other day. Here’s what I suggested to her, in order: Bathory - Woman of Dark Desires, Enter the Eternal Fire Rotting Christ - A Dynasty from the Ice Deafheaven - Dream House, Honeycomb Immortal - Withstand the Fall of Time, The Sun No Longer Rises Cradle of Filth - Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids, Beneath the Howling Stars, At the Gates of Midian Zeal & Ardor - Fire of Motion, You Ain’t Coming Back, Götterdamerung Panopticon - Killing the Giants As They Sleep I didn’t recommend Burzum straight away because of the controversy, and I thought something like Mayhem would take a bit of warming up to at first. The songs that got me into black metal personally were Dream House and Dunkelheit.
I think it's pretty easy to separate the controversy from the music with Burzum; for me Dunkelheit, Jesus Tod, Det Som En Gang Var (and many more) have to be on a beginner's guide to BM! PS I fucking love The Sun No Longer Rises!!
@@kingnotail3838 Yeah fair, but I was a little startled when I first heard about it and I almost wrote off his music entirely. I’m glad I didn’t though. I’m pretty sure Filosofem was actually the first full black metal album she listened to, and she loved it :)
Bathory - Enter the eternal fire (or Equimanthorn, or A fine day to die, or Woman of dark desires, or For all those who died...anything off the first four albums would probably do!) Mayhem - Funeral fog Emperor - Cosmic keys to my creations and times Dissection - Where dead angels lie Ulver - Soelen gaaer bag aase need Immortal - As the eternity opens Burzum - Det som engang var Cradle of Filth - Funeral in Carpathia Myrkur - Maneblot Primordial - The gathering wilderness
You should do a top ten modern black metal songs (2010 or newer) to get your friends into black metal. For example, nowadays I recommend Fires in the Dark by Enslaved from their 2020 album Utgard and it's a good foot in the door for the genre
Windir - The Spiritlord Panopticon - Autumn Eternal Mare Cognitum - Antaresian Havukruunu - Uinuos Syömein Sota Enslaved - 793 Bathory - A Fine Day To Die Borknagar - Winter Thrice Agalloch - ...And the Great Cold Death of the Earth Spectral Lore - Ατραπός Ulver - I Troldskog faren vild For getting used to the vocal style, I would also give an Alcest album to the "victim". Maybe "Les voyages de l'âme"
Nice list. But I think a part two is necessary. there were just old hits almost there, wich is good, but much of the newer is more "easy listening" Like you said, many Dimmu songs, Mgla and Cradle. I have to mention "Marduk - The Blonde Beast" Such a hit! And "Summoning- Old Mornings Dawn" Cheers from Sweden.

These are more atmospheric bm/ blackgaze. I would suggest Blackbraid I. It’s easier to listen to the earlier traditional bm but isn’t really atmospheric, more straight up metal. I would suggest songs like Black Brick by Deafheaven or Luna is also great by Deafheaven. But for me, I thought I hated bm until I listened to Blackbraid and I started diving in after that.

Another excellent list. Some songs I've used to convert others to black metal would include: Borknagar "The Winter Way" Dimmu Borgir "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" Old Man's Child "Millennium King"
Good video, good topic. First two agreed. Good pick of Emperor. Ulver, Bathory, Darkthrone... all in correct places. Satyricon is good one. Immortal is easier to understand on their debut. "Cryptic Winterstorms" easily the most catchy song from there. "At The Heart Of Winter" - "Solarfall" to be exact; Album as a whole has a reputation of "an album for newcomers". Gorgoroth is better with their fifth album - "Satan Incipit". The same situation as Immortal. With Dissection "The Somberlain" is a better example - more clean sound, much more easier composition. If you got "The Somberlain" then "Night's Blood" will be a blast, but not in reverse. Behemoth "The Sathanist" is also a good, especially for the ones that already got the Death Metal.
My introduction to BM was Damp Chill Of Life by None. That album basically made it so I only listen to atmospheric black, traditional black sounds too grating to me and atmospheric BM adds a layer of air between the music and my ears

Windir - “Svartesmeden Og Lundamyrstrollet” - Arntor 4. Enslaved - “Allfadr Odinn” - Yggdrasil 5. OMC - “Christian Death” - Born of the Flickering
Agree with your list very much, as a German I would also add Nagelfar (from "Hühnengrab im Herbst" or "Virus West") and Bethlehem (from "Dictius te necare"), Cheers!
Some of my favs Watain - The Serpentine Chalice and Serimosa Dimmu Borgir - Kings of Carnival creation Nocturnal Depression - Remords posthume and Spring Burzum - Ea lord of the Depth Drudkh - Furrows of God Winterfylleth - The Ruin Batoushka - Yektenia 3 Godseed - Exit through carved stone , Satan Prometheus
Great list! Here are some of mine: Samael - Into the Pentagram - different look at early BM Summoning long lost to where no pathway goes - i know i know ppl will say THIS IS NOT BM - whatever - the atmosphere on the Stronghold album and this track in particular IMO is a great gateway to BM DARK FUNERAL - Unchain My Soul Evilfeast - Wintermoon Enchantment - the entire album!
I remember when I was get into black metal, it was a song Convoy to Nothingness by Enslaved. It's not a studio version but rather a live version from their DVD "Live Retaliation". I was only a child back then around the age of 11 or 12. And then comes Immortal's One by One from a video game Tony Hawk's Project 8.
Darkthrone - Over fjell og gjennom torner Gorgoroth - Gorgoroth Gorgoroth - Sorg Taake - Hordaland dødskvad I Craft - Earth a raging blaze Satyricon - Dawn of a new age Emperor - Inno a Satana Immortal - Unsilent storms in the north abyss Mgla - With hearts toward none I Burzum - Det som engang var Mayhem - Life eternal Dimmu Borgir - Dødsferd and more and more and more....
If this was titled "10 best songs from classic black metal bands" I would just agree I guess! But songs to get someone into black metal? First of all, you have to include nothing that has "raw" production. Everything you shared (apart from Mother North) has "raw" production! Next,it needs to be a bit poppy and easy listening OR ballady and acoustic! 1.Dragonlord - Vals de la muerte (to ease them into the "dark" atmospheric sound) 2.Agalloch - In the shadow of our pale companion (to ease them into the harsh vocals) 3.Primordial - Children of the Harvest (to introduce long distorted riffs) 4.Alcest - Ecailles de Lune pt2 (lets get them into blast beats easily) After that I would explain that black metal has many many many different (sub)subgenres and give a song for most of the different styles (still having in mind not to go extremely crazy) Darkthrone - Wreak (traditional black but with a better production, still has those Celtic Frost riffs, harsh vocals and long melodic black metal riffs) Falkenbach - Baldurs Tod (folk black and what an amazing song) Dodheimsgard - Ion Storm (industrial black) Wędrowcy~Tułacze~Zbiegi - Światu, co wszystko mu jedno (to explain that BM isnt always about blastbeats and harsh vocals but also about the dark atmosphere) I could continue but you get my point by now. I guess shit songs like Dimmu Borgir's Puritania could also work but I struggle to recommend something I consider bad music to someone! xD
Black atmospheric- Strid “ End of Life” ( creator of DSBM) Serithal “ In the still of a northern full moon” Naglefar “Schwanengesang” Empyruim “ The ensemble of silence” Son of the sleepless “ Phoenix rise” Doom /Gothic Paragon of Beauty “ To my unfading sorrow “ Draconian “ Death come near me”
i still dont really like Mayhem but the first BM song i ever heard was war by burzum then i was like oh this is pretty nice so i listened to transilvanian hunger but i really reccomend war to people that wanna get into BM but listen to metal i will always reccomend war since its kinda familiar riffage with vargs vocals
Some other ones I'd definitely recommend to a newcomer Taake - Hordalands Doedskvad I Mgla - Exercises in Futility V Marduk - Those of the Unlight Necromantia - Scarlet Witching Dreams
My first BM song was hehe Forest whispers my name by Cradle of Filth. Yeah yeah it js not canon, but then I went into Freezing Moon, Dunkelheit, Equimanthorn, then Gorgoroth, Nargaroth (seven tears flow into the river or Geliebte des Regens) then Immortal, and then Marduk! Love them all. Love Emperor, love Rotting Christ, love Dimmu. Love Behemoth. BM has atmosphere like nothing in metal genre.oh and Darkthrone !!!!!! Classic is classic, cant be a knockoff of it.
I had a cassette of EMPEROR ~ with all the writing rubbed off so i had no idea who it was, but I listened over and over wondering what this music was>???!!
10) Audn "Lifvana jord" 9) Woods of Desolation "Unfold" 8) Wolves in the Throne Room "Spirit of Lightning" 7) Vallendusk "Fragments of Light" 6) Woods of Desolation "Darker Days" 5) Sargeist "Empire of Suffering" 4) Behexen "Blessed Be the Darkness" 3) Slagmark "Purging Sacred Soils" 2) Drowning the Light "An Alignment of Dead Stars" 1) Inquisition "Hymn to the Absolute Majesty of Darkness and Fire
Grausamkeit - Kratze from Pink/Green demo '97. Sorry if anyone already said it...I only recently found it myself. It is demo quality but man is it good... Guitars, haunting vocals and the keys sections are a surprise considering how the song starts. PS... the 8m version has no silence at the end.
I wouldn't argue with any on the list except Gorgoroth (never been a fan), Part 2 would be good...maybe include the first track on Blood in Our Wells from Drudkh, include some Rotting Christ, Enslaved, Samael, Sacramentum, Cradle, old Dimmu, and Summoning.
Apparently, "Maaneskyggens Slave" by Gorgoroth is the most underrated black metal song ever. Sad. It's my favorite black song by far and one of my favorites of all time.
Immortal’s One by One and In My Kingdom Cold have breakdowns so this is an easier transition for hardcore kids out there. That’s what brought me over to the Dark Side.
Is this a list of songs that personify the genre or a list of songs to get people into black metal? Cause it feels like the first and that is quite different from the second. Stuff like the first song on Bergtatt, Summoning and Enslaved would be much better for people to get into into black metal than a lot of these, cause they are too harsh for newcomers.
"Thank God I heard where dead angels lie by Dissection." If Burzum made you hate black metal, i couldn't more understand Dissection made you like it? Jon Nödtveidt was a huge piece of garbage. (More than anything Varg Vikernes could be)
I think you´ve missed out a bit on the posty and/or folky side of the genre and the crossover qualities of it. You could easily convince peps of the genre after introducing them to Agalloch, Empyrium, Panopticon, Der Weg einer Freiheit, Lifelover etc. For me personally as a ambient/drone listener/producer who has basically nothing to do with Metal (except of some Stoner Doom wich sounds more like 70´s Rock to me) as a whole Payssage d´Hivier was a major gateway into the genre.
This is a good introduction to black metal but I don't think these are good songs for someone who doesn't like BM yet. Dissection and Dimmu were good picks but I would pick some Alcest and agalloch as well which got me into the genre.
Her Ghost in the Fog by Cradle of Filth was the first black metal song I heard. Instantly became obsessed. From there it was At the Heart of Winter by Immortal and down the icy crevasse I went
From what they say about Cradle, they have cool songs. I love Mannequin, Her ghost in the fog, Babylon AD, Bathory Aria, and many more, yeah it isnt black metal, but is still cool. Fuck others opinions, if music makes you feel good, listen to it.
@Magnitheron Exactly. By all measures possible though, Cradle of Filth's first few albums absolutely are black metal. Dusk and her embrace is definitely what first got me into black metal.
@@kingnotail3838 more like symphonic metal, but I agree with The principle of evil made flesh and Dusk and her embrace as a black metal , but not like strict norwegian style black metal, still , they are cool and got many good songs.
@@Magnitheron There is no "strict Norwegian style black metal". Emperor and Immortal sound very different to Burzum and Darkthrone, for example. The reason I love black metal so much is that when you get deep into it, there are no rules, and for some reason Black Metal seems to mix well with a huge variety of other music styles, something that appears pretty unique to Black Metal. Remember, most artists don't care about labels, it's a tiny subset of "fans" that do. Genuine music fans don't give a shit about music being considered "real" or "true" or whatever.
@@kingnotail3838 yes, I agree , I meant first first BM bands, like Darkthrone and Mayhem, but I agree with you;)Black metal is cool coz everything is mixed here, even folk or electronic music. F.ex Mgła-Groza, sometimes sooo melodic. Burzum-Dunkelheit or Nargaroth-Geliebte des Regens: ambient, I love it, even electronic like Iperyt;) and it sounds cool. Also love in BM those additional sounds like wind, nature voices, lines from movies or sounds of shackles etc. it is all nice mixed and yet sounds like BM;) it is much deeper than boom boom boom blast blast death metal;)

3. Windir - “Svartesmeden Og Lundamyrstrollet” - Arntor
4. Enslaved - “Allfadr Odinn” - Yggdrasil
5. OMC - “Christian Death” - Born of the Flickering
Agree with your list very much, as a German I would also add Nagelfar (from "Hühnengrab im Herbst" or "Virus West") and Bethlehem (from "Dictius te necare"), Cheers!
Not many know of “ Hunengrab I’m herbst” the original Nagelfar what an album💪👍
I would recommend:
-From the Cradle to Enslaved (Cradle of Filth)
-One by One (Immortal)
Good sound and production and catchy songs!
Weirdly enough, Ancient Nation by Nokturnal Mortum was what finally got my father into black metal..
Some of my favs
Watain - The Serpentine Chalice and Serimosa
Dimmu Borgir - Kings of Carnival creation
Nocturnal Depression - Remords posthume and Spring
Burzum - Ea lord of the Depth
Drudkh - Furrows of God
Winterfylleth - The Ruin
Batoushka - Yektenia 3
Godseed - Exit through carved stone , Satan Prometheus
Great list! Here are some of mine:
Samael - Into the Pentagram - different look at early BM
Summoning long lost to where no pathway goes - i know i know ppl will say THIS IS NOT BM - whatever - the atmosphere on the Stronghold album and this track in particular IMO is a great gateway to BM
DARK FUNERAL - Unchain My Soul
Evilfeast - Wintermoon Enchantment - the entire album!
It was Call from the Grave on GTA 4 for me
@@butcheredalive same
Windir’s Journey To The End.
Darkthrone - Over fjell og gjennom torner
Gorgoroth - Gorgoroth
Gorgoroth - Sorg
Taake - Hordaland dødskvad I
Craft - Earth a raging blaze
Satyricon - Dawn of a new age
Emperor - Inno a Satana
Immortal - Unsilent storms in the north abyss
Mgla - With hearts toward none I
Burzum - Det som engang var
Mayhem - Life eternal
Dimmu Borgir - Dødsferd
and more and more and more....
Song that peaked my interest in bm was todeswalzer by windir, back in 05/06
Definitely do a part two. I wouldn't be watching this video if it wasn't for Dimmu Borgir.
1.Dragonlord - Vals de la muerte (to ease them into the "dark" atmospheric sound)
2.Agalloch - In the shadow of our pale companion (to ease them into the harsh vocals)
3.Primordial - Children of the Harvest (to introduce long distorted riffs)
4.Alcest - Ecailles de Lune pt2 (lets get them into blast beats easily)
After that I would explain that black metal has many many many different (sub)subgenres and give a song for most of the different styles (still having in mind not to go extremely crazy)
Darkthrone - Wreak (traditional black but with a better production, still has those Celtic Frost riffs, harsh vocals and long melodic black metal riffs)
Falkenbach - Baldurs Tod (folk black and what an amazing song)
Dodheimsgard - Ion Storm (industrial black)
Wędrowcy~Tułacze~Zbiegi - Światu, co wszystko mu jedno (to explain that BM isnt always about blastbeats and harsh vocals but also about the dark atmosphere)
I could continue but you get my point by now. I guess shit songs like Dimmu Borgir's Puritania could also work but I struggle to recommend something I consider bad music to someone! xD
Black atmospheric-
Strid “ End of Life” ( creator of DSBM)
Serithal “ In the still of a northern full moon”
Naglefar “Schwanengesang”
Empyruim “ The ensemble of silence”
Son of the sleepless “ Phoenix rise”
Doom /Gothic
Paragon of Beauty “ To my unfading sorrow “
Draconian “ Death come near me”
Tyrans from Immortal should be on the list imo! \m/
Pagan fears is my favorite Mayhem song. Highly recommended.
i still dont really like Mayhem but the first BM song i ever heard was war by burzum then i was like oh this is pretty nice so i listened to transilvanian hunger but i really reccomend war to people that wanna get into BM but listen to metal i will always reccomend war since its kinda familiar riffage with vargs vocals
Some other ones I'd definitely recommend to a newcomer
Taake - Hordalands Doedskvad I
Mgla - Exercises in Futility V
Marduk - Those of the Unlight
Necromantia - Scarlet Witching Dreams
My first BM song was hehe Forest whispers my name by Cradle of Filth. Yeah yeah it js not canon, but then I went into Freezing Moon, Dunkelheit, Equimanthorn, then Gorgoroth, Nargaroth (seven tears flow into the river or Geliebte des Regens) then Immortal, and then Marduk! Love them all. Love Emperor, love Rotting Christ, love Dimmu. Love Behemoth. BM has atmosphere like nothing in metal genre.oh and Darkthrone !!!!!! Classic is classic, cant be a knockoff of it.
my first bm song was forest whispers my name too ! heard it when i was like 8 yo
I had a cassette of EMPEROR ~ with all the writing rubbed off so i had no idea who it was, but I listened over and over wondering what this music was>???!!
10) Audn "Lifvana jord"
9) Woods of Desolation "Unfold"
8) Wolves in the Throne Room "Spirit of Lightning"
7) Vallendusk "Fragments of Light"
6) Woods of Desolation "Darker Days"
5) Sargeist "Empire of Suffering"
4) Behexen "Blessed Be the Darkness"
3) Slagmark "Purging Sacred Soils"
2) Drowning the Light "An Alignment of Dead Stars"
1) Inquisition "Hymn to the Absolute Majesty of Darkness and Fire
WITTR 👍 As I lay down my bones…… for me
Grausamkeit - Kratze from Pink/Green demo '97.
Sorry if anyone already said it...I only recently found it myself.
It is demo quality but man is it good... Guitars, haunting vocals and the keys sections are a surprise considering how the song starts.
PS... the 8m version has no silence at the end.
Would be happy for part 2🤘
Anything and I mean anything by Dissection
I wouldn't argue with any on the list except Gorgoroth (never been a fan), Part 2 would be good...maybe include the first track on Blood in Our Wells from Drudkh, include some Rotting Christ, Enslaved, Samael, Sacramentum, Cradle, old Dimmu, and Summoning.
I'd maybe suggest Conquer All by Behemoth. A bit of Blackened Death Metal if people are coming to Black Metal from Death Metal.
I THOUGHT OF ANOTHER!!!!!
Pagan Hellfire - Solidarity (song is off album of same name)
Incredible song.
Apparently, "Maaneskyggens Slave" by Gorgoroth is the most underrated black metal song ever. Sad. It's my favorite black song by far and one of my favorites of all time.
I would actually start someone with that Ulver song because of the lack of harsh vocals... and THEN stuff like Immortal and later Darkthrone.
Immortal’s One by One and In My Kingdom Cold have breakdowns so this is an easier transition for hardcore kids out there. That’s what brought me over to the Dark Side.
Anything off Under the Sign of the Black Mark is an essential tbh
Is this a list of songs that personify the genre or a list of songs to get people into black metal? Cause it feels like the first and that is quite different from the second. Stuff like the first song on Bergtatt, Summoning and Enslaved would be much better for people to get into into black metal than a lot of these, cause they are too harsh for newcomers.
the song "Gorgoroth" is THE essential imo
Best black metal song
Yo should do an Ulver ranking
My suggestion is Mare Cognitum:"Constellation Hipparchia"
Norway all the way on this one! 8/10 from Norway
Literally Burzum made me hate black metal for a long time because a friend showed me it .Thank God I heard where dead angels lie by Dissection.
"Thank God I heard where dead angels lie by Dissection."
If Burzum made you hate black metal, i couldn't more understand Dissection made you like it?
Jon Nödtveidt was a huge piece of garbage. (More than anything Varg Vikernes could be)
Possessed by bathory got me into black metal in 1985
I think where dead angels lie was the first black metal song I checked out on kazoo. I didnt like the vocals but really liked the riffs!
I'm a bit less "classic", I came into BM with Vintersorg - Fjällets Mäktiga Mur & Nokturnal Mortum - Ukraïna
Might do a part 2 which encomposes newer bands and different styles like you mentioned
Black Metal is the greatest genre of music Period
Seeing at BLACK METAL TEENS HEARING PINK FLOYD
Mayhem is good and all, very influential yes, but are also highly overrated.
Dunkelheit is my everyday lullaby
where did you get the drudkh shirt?
Got it a while ago but I think through the season of a mist website
Part 2!!! Part2 !!!!
BURZUM!
Did the discord get deleted?
🤘🏻🤘🏻
I started with technically Sylvester anfang
War on Burzum's debut was my first black metal song I heard, and the whole album after.
first
