- Join me on a captivating journey to Highland Beach, MD, a place of rich history and significance as America's first resort for African Americans. Founded by Charles Douglass, the son of renowned abolitionist Frederick Douglass, this charming town on the Chesapeake Bay offers a unique glimpse into the past.
In this historic travel vlog, I explore the legacy of Highland Beach, its historic "Twin Oak" house, and beautiful views of the Chesapeake Bay. Discover why affluent African Americans from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore sought refuge here in the late 19th century.
Explore the streets named after prominent African American figures and learn about the town's empowering history. From Harriet Tubman to W. E. B. Du Bois, Highland Beach hosted influential guests who left their mark.
Is this a place you'd like to visit or call home? Let me know in the comments, and don't forget to like, subscribe, and share this video to spread the rich history of Highland Beach.

I would love to live in such a historic community.
So would I? Its beautiful and peaceful also.
Drove through there yesterday and it was such a beautiful beach in a tight knit neighborhood. Douglas definitely picked a great place to establish a community.
I think it was a great spot too. That community seems to love it. I hope more people get to go through and see the spot. They probably don't hope that!
I grew up in MD, and I never heard about this community. Thanks for sharing!
Me too! It's cool how so many interesting places are right under my nose and we don't even know it! How you subscribe so I can share more places like this with you!
Born and raised in the DMV and I've known about Highland Beach for a little over a year now and would love to live there, in fact I'm reading a book about Highland Beach by Sunny Hostin, I love learning about our history especially when it so close to home.
Summer on Highland Beach! I found that book after visiting and it's on my list to read. Wasn't this an interesting bit of our history? Id never heard of it. I'm happy to share it with those who didn't know the history. Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you for this video! I just finished a book today called Summer on the Bluffs, set in Oak Bluffs. It’s part of a trilogy and one of the books is set here in Highland Beach. The other is set in Sag Harbor. The African-American history is so rich in all 3 places. I’m making it a goal to visit in person!
Me too! I planned to visit Sag Harbor this year but it didn't work out. Hopefully I'll visit soon. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for stopping by!
no problem! @@novelworldtravels
Ooo I’m going to check out those books 📚 Thanks for the tip.
I would love to live there!
Me too! Seems like a peaceful place. The people were nice too.
Hi son. Such a lovely and peaceful place. Would love to visit some day. Much to quiet for me to live at. I like a little noise.😊
It does look nice. Yeah, there ain't much noise there. It's probably a nice place for a vacation though.
There are actually several black beach enclaves in MD. Columbia beach in Shadyside md is another but its a gated Black waterfront community
Thanks Jamaal! I had no idea. I'm always interested in places like these where we have to create our own spaces to enjoy ourselves. Thanks for sharing this. I have some videos in the future you make enjoy. Hope you stick around and check them out!
I had a vague knowledge of this place but so cool to learn about the details!
Yeah, it's probably 15-20 minutes from you. It's an interesting place with an interesting history. Im really happy I found it and get to share it with you!
Great video! Thanks 4 sharing. ❤🖤💚✨
Thank you! Glad you liked the video.
Nice, what a beautiful and historical place !
I’m sure it was very cool to get to take it all in in person. I can see it being a great place to visit, vacation or maybe even having a summer home there.
The sound of the waves at the end was Lovely 😍, I love the beach 🏖
Thanks Kenny ☀️👍🏾!
R.
Agreed, Id love to vacation there. So glad you enjoyed the video!
🙂👍🏾!
That looks like a wonderful peaceful place to live.
I think so too. Thanks for stopping by.
@@novelworldtravels Your videos are so informative, always a pleasure to stop by.
@@rosieposie9564 Thank you!
I really enjoyed the history of the place. Beautiful area!
It was a cool area. Im glad I got to visit and share it.
Excellent! 👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽👍🏽Thank you for this video. I enjoy learning about my people. I'm headed to Baltimore soon and will try to find this area. Were there any nearby restaurants that serve seafood or fish? I did subscribe to your channel. Check mine out to see what kind of food I enjoy. Hopefully, there will be a great place to eat in that area. Much appreciated!
Hey! I love learning about our people too and this was brand new to me. So glad I got to share it. Make your way down if you get the chance, but know that it's a private neighborhood. The people wave and were kind every time I drove by but the neighborhood security prefers people not stop and park. The guy I encountered was kind enough to give me a little time and that's when I flew my drone around. Just letting you know just in case the long drive isn't worth it if you can't explore the way you want. I subscribed and watched one of your videos. I love to see new places so I'm excited to check out more. There are several well known seafood spots around Bmore, but Nick's Fish House and Jimmy's Famous seafood are the most popular places I know of. I hope you have a great time in Baltimore. Thanks for stopping by my channel!
@@novelworldtravels Wow!! I just viewed food at Jimmy's. I will definitely find this place. Highland Beach is nice to see on your video, so I guess I will be satisfied. 😏😁 BTW, thanks for checking out my channel and subscribing.
Yes, my experience is that they will let you drive through but no parking and the speed limit is 15 miles an hour. My goal is to befriend someone who lives there because that beach at sunset was chef’s kiss. I would love to retire in one of those lovely homes.
@@prettyflytraveler Sounds like you are truly thinking it through for retirement. I retired early, but life had basically sent me back to my birth city, where I had not lived in 33 years. Am I happy to be alive and well for retirement? YES! Am I happy to return to my beautiful once called the historically "Black Mecca" city that 7 million outsiders have turned into a mega-fake-disrespectful-criminal-minded Southern nightmare? NO-O-O!!😁😅 These days, I, too, keep looking for a peaceful place to retire--that's not here. Good look!👍🏽🙏🏽
